I hope to get a response even though this video is a bit old, But Im still trying to understand slippering the heels. When you do so, is that area even making contact with the ground? I am dealing with a horse who has low heels and they're curving under like youve been describing in these videos. So when you are slipping the heels are they just being trimmed back to relieve the pressure and allow them to start over essentially?

My arab mare has super similar feet, when i map her using ELPO protocol, breakover guideline is about 1/8th behind the Sole/wall junction at the toe. just got my first grinder (same as yours) i know you use 24-36 grit disks, but until i get confident using it, i went for 60 grit disks so i cant remove too much material too quickly. Thanks Daisy, love the content, very digestible education.

Just did my first grinder trim on my 23 yo walking horse. After taking some time for both of us to get used to it, I am hooked. I have been trimming my horses for 14 years and I find that my older ones really lean on me to help balance their weight. The less time they have a foot in the air - even on a stand - the better for both of us. I am in NC and I have nearly passed out after a hard trim due to the heat and pain. I was worried that I would have less control with the grinder, but I use a wide range of power tools every day so it felt very natural and easy to use. As I get older, the grinder is going to make my life so much better. I look forward to more time loving on my horses and riding and less time trimming.

So many vets just say oh wow you should put him down.. but following proper diet, blood work, meds if needed and knowledgeable farrier work is what works! Love to see the progress! I did not listen to my vet and had my pony 7 more years..Ups and downs happened but he was a stubborn feisty little guy..I waited til he said it was time...I gave him 7 more years because I read and tried everything and that included trimming him..I was not a farrier but I became his and it worked!❤ I hope this guy had a long happy life after his realignment and diet adjustments! Thanks for what you do and sharing!😊

That is dental impression material, a hoof packing that is resilient and springy, with a lot of cushion. They come in different colors and durometer (a measurement of tensile strength and hardness), and this one is fairly soft...plus it's pink so for me that's a bonus! :)

Domestication has confined an animal made for movement, and this does not allow the horse to develop its digital cushion, which protects the nerves that cause pain at the back of the foot. To develop "efficient bare feet" or to re-establish laminitis or naviculars after shoe removal, it's the same principle: re-education through movement supplemented by an appropriate diet. The horse must be gradually trained to regain its natural function of putting its foot "heel first". Walk the horse as often as possible but not for as long as the horse is not at ease. and put and lays abnormally "flat" or ''toe first'". As soon as he lays heel first, walk him for longer. 1/ Trimming: leave 5 to 7 millimetres of heel height and bars above the level of the sole to "help" the correct heel placement and on the rest of the foot: bring the walls down to the level of the sole and cut them 5, 6 millimetres wide from the white line 2/ walk until the horse places "heels first, shoulders supple". Difficult cases: make the horse walk on the grass or (and) put hipposandals on the forelegs and even if necessary, place foam triangles on the back of the hipposandal to give maximum comfort. Progress at the horse's pace. This may take 2 or 3 days or 2 or 3 weeks or several months if shoeing or (and) overweight has degraded the horse's foot mechanisms, Read Pete Ramey a very experienced specialist in the development of "horseless barefoot performance" and the healing of equine foot pathologies > hoof rehab.com

I appreciate that Pete has a lot to share about heel development. I'm very familiar with his work and have been to his clinics. I find that in addition to heel first landing, we can facilitate the 'uncurling' of very contracted heels by also using this slippering technique.
