The Vicar of Dibley: Vicar in Lockdown
Whilst the Vicar is on holiday, Hugo has to stand in for the Vicar’s sermon. He also tells us what his late wife (Alice Springs Horton) favourite joke was.
Emma Chambers (1964-2018) - Komedie
Hugo and Alice were made for each other. Just lovely.
Their actors had the same birthday in real life
@@Inkyminkyzizwoz really thats nice
James Fleet just dropping straight back into Hugo with all his daft melancholy and gentle empathy. 3.5 minutes where he makes you belly laugh one moment and tear up the next.
Also brutal (albeit in character) in this universe David abandoned his recently widowed son, now single father and made a point of not inviting him to his wedding. RIP Gary Waldhorn
Rest in Peace, sweet Emma Chambers! Thanks for your gentle humor and enthusiasm!
The reference to David Horton "moving to Monaco" is all the more poignant now that the actor who played him has passed, leaving Hugo's actor and Geraldine's as the only members of the cast who are still with us.
Really? I didn't know that thanks.
Yes I was just thinking that. Owen, Letisha, Frank, Jim, Alice and now David all gone. What a wonderful programme it was and they were all just right for the characters.
no no no no no.... yes 😢❤
And then there were two ...
What no oh that breaks my heart
All the Dibley cast who can talk about Alice Tinker without totally dissolving get my vote. Legends all, not one person miscast.
Absolutely agree! It's such a shame though that there's only the Vicar (Dawn French) and Hugo (James Fleet) still with us today!
I loved those rare moments when Emma would let her considerable intelligence shine through her character.
Oh yes! One of my favorites was during the Nativity play auditions, when she started speaking in fluent Hebrew. Just brilliant!

Emma was a bright light in world that didn't understand how simple things can be to those didn't understand it.
I'm still laughing Hugo. We all miss your lovely wife. Take care.
So sweet. What a beautiful tribute to the beautiful love Hugo & Alice had got each other. They were such beautiful characters ❤
Love this show. Watch an episode on my phone at night before drifting off to sleep. I really wish they had packed more episodes into the seasons. There just is not enough Dibly in the world.
Used to love Alice, because she was so gentle and innocent in a world she didn’t understand. What would she have made out of today’s nightmares, I wonder? 😢
You know... I think Alice Tinker Horton would have been just as obliviously wise as ever, just as childlike and positive and naive and wonderful as she always was. She would not have quite understood any more about today's events than she ever did at other times, but would surely have been as willing and enthusiastic to make the best of things, to be happy and help others be happy, as she ever was. I'd like to think, were she a real person and living, that she would be exactly what her fictional character was -- a refreshing change from the majority, an antidote to cynicism and despair. A perhaps simple but brilliant light in the darkness... and who would occasionally wonder why so many of us seemed so sad and scared and angry when there were still good things to enjoy, like family, friends, and Teletubbies, Curly Wurlys, biscuits, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (AND the stuff she can't believe is NOT I Can't Believe It's Not Butter)... when there is still so much beauty and joy to be had in this life. There weren't enough people like her then. We sure could use even more now.
@@sclerismockrey8506 indeed, my feeling about Alice is that she may have been portrayed as the least intelligent character, but she never had an unkind word to say about anyone, and she always tried to make other people feel happy by the things she said and did, even if they were completely silly and nonsensical things. I think most of the other people in the village accepted her for who she was. David Horton was the only one who was gratuitously cruel to her by putting her down all the time. That was a bad reflection on his character.
Emma Chambers was brilliant at playing at playing Alice......What a wonderful actress, i'd love to have married someone like her.....Alice Tinker was a wonderful human being that could bring a smile to your face every single day of your life, i'd love to marry someone like her!. If it weren't for the law, i'd marry them both!!
Poor Hugo.
I remember when my poppy lost his beloved wife of over 55 years, my Grammy, back in May.
He was devastated at losing the love of his life, and he hasn’t been the same since.
I bet the same thing happened with Hugo. God, losing the love of your life is something that is extremely agonizing for all. The flashbacks of the clips of his younger self in love with Alice is also heartbreaking in that we see the flashes of time come together: we see the young Hugo, an idealist deeply in love with this woman and with his whole future being ahead of him; and then we see the older Hugo, clearly shattered by the death of his beloved wife, wisened with age and still grappling with grief. He’s coming to grips with his own mortality in the wake of his beloved wife’s death.
I remember a Nick Cave quote in regards to grief: “It seems to me, that if we love, we grieve. That’s the deal. That’s the pact. Grief and love are forever intertwined. Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and, like love, grief is non-negotiable.“
Hugo and Alice were meant for each other, and his love for her was so deep that not even grief can change that, and he will likely continue to love her until he himself takes his last dying breath.
Thank you all for your tributes to my dear Alice. You are all so loved. I can never use butter without thinking about I can't believe it's not butter. And of course I know that real butter is not I can't believe it's not butter because it is and I can't believe it's not butter isn't. But when I use butter I always think about our Alice and the reality of butter. So I do believe that I can't believe it's not butter may in actual fact be butter and I can't believe it's not butter is probably real. I know my dear Alice is real in my heart. Always. And the darn butter isn't can't believe it's not butter except for Wednesday. That's when I use olive oil. Love you Alice. Always
So sweet that they keep going with this.
Love everything from this show.❤❤❤
I can’t believe that, I can’t believe its not butter, is not butter, and actually believe that I can’t believe its not butter is butter, and I believe that there is actually a lot more butter around than anyone thought. This was a brilliant show, all of the actors god bless them provided so much enjoyment and pleasure, Jim Trot, the Dibley poisoner Mrs Cropley, Owen Newitt, David Horton and of course Alice Tinker, so much talent in one show. It was a great comedy show and I watched everyone as it came out, they dont make like that anymore.
This was such a sweet, feel-good show. It used to be on Netflix, but not anymore.
Emma you are missed and that was a sweet tribute 😢
Hugo and Alice were perfect together.
Would love this show to come back.
sadly only two of the cast are still alive
It wouldn't be the same.
I'd love it to come back too, but it wouldn't really work now
Referencing the Vicar is amazing Hugo to fill in for the Vicar.
Wonderful! Well done!
Wonderful, you made me laugh 😂😍
Thanks Hugo. God bless.
Thank you for a lovely video , made me laugh 😂❤
😢💔
So sweet
I still don’t understand why this show didn’t run longer considering it’s popularity
Most of the cast were older and think that was one issue.
Interesting that James Fleet had a bigger age difference from the person playing his wife than from the one playing his father!
Beautifully done, funny and poignant
Yes, Hugo actually is quite funny too!
I think my brain short circuited before the joke unfortunately.
I kind of wish they never did anymore after any of the main cast died, even these small 5 minute bits, all I can think of is how Hugo had Alice die and his father left him and he's been living alone for years, why do this to us
Lovely lovely lovely ❤❤
Don't tell me they got Alice, too! It's bad enough that Emma is no longer with us.
Yes, because they kept doing what were called “Red nose specials”, after the regular run of the show was over, and then a series of “The Vicar in Lockdown “ specials during the actual lockdown, so they had to explain Alice’s absence.
So nice to see the vicar again but it's sad cause all but 2 are dead 😢😢😢😢
Epic
Actually the joke is funnier than Michael MacIntyre!
😥💖
Raw emotion right there.
Alice was so innocent her joke not really funny She went too soon
how do you start a teddy bear race? Jesus, that is funny, LOL!!! Must tell that to my elderly neighbour and friend who tells dad jokes regularly.
Sorry but I found this post plain silly. Plus, there's no need to use our Lord's Name in vain--very tasteless.
