FAIRFIELD HORSESHOE | A 10 Mile Circular Walk | Lake District National Park
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 7. 04. 2023
- Happy Easter everyone! Today's hike is a classic & an absolutely spectacular circular route from Rydal or Ambleside to Fairfield summit at 873m. It's a brilliant route to do on a day with great conditions as it provides stunning views all along the route and takes in a total of 8 Wainwrights. For that reason, I'd say it is a moderately difficult walk, not technically but in terms of the continuous nature of the walk to reach all 8 Wainwrights! As mentioned, the descent can be lengthy and can involve a tricky step down at a "bad step" at Low Brock Crags, which can be avoided if the alternative route is taken.
đStarts at Rydal Pelter Bridge National Trust Car Park
â°ïžTicks off 8 Wainwrights - Nab Scar, Low Pike, High Pike, Heron Pike, Hart Crag, Great Rigg, Fairfield, and Dove Crag
As always, I hope you enjoy this video and thank you for watching!

It was summer I did it with a fellow CZcamsr and friend, with his wife and we had very different weather unfortunately, the promised sun never materialised but the mist and wind, which was not forecasted prevailed most of the day. Nice to see those glorious views that we missed out on and we also parked at Pelter Bridge too. Man you were so lucky to get winter weather like that and as you say 'perfect' indeed. Despite the sun and blue skies it did look dam chilly as well, so defo a day to keep on the move. Great to see you retained the amazing views but it is a long walk back to the car after you finish that last fell, cheers Alan
Ahh that's a shame, hopefully you can get back one day to enjoy this beautiful route in clear conditions! Couldn't believe how fortunate I was with the weather last February when I completed this but as you say, definitely couldn't stop for long, was around freezing most of the day đ„¶ Thanks again for watching and commenting, appreciate the support đ«¶đ»
awesum views,stunning walk Thank you.
It is a stunning route isnât it - thanks for coming along on the adventure, pleased you enjoyed the video đ
Beautiful part of the country
It really is! No place quite like it!
Thank you for that wonderful video. What a day that was. A few years since I've done that and now at an age where it's beyond me so it was terrific to experience it vicariously with you. Mind, I'll never get used to seeing heights of fells given in metres - just showing my age.
Thanks Graham, pleased you enjoyed this one too đ this is one of my fave horseshoe routes in the Lakes, especially on days like that! Ahah thatâs interesting, never thought to use anything other than metres!!
What Beautiful views!! Thats definitely something I'm looking forward too!
Thanks Matt - really nice to see youâre enjoying the videos & finding inspiration for your future hiking adventures! đ
@shefreelyroams there's definitely a few places that I've watched in your videos that I've never heard of which I'm now going to do at some point for a video or two. So I do thank you for the inspiration đ.
Lovely amazing views - thanks for sharing great video .
Thanks for joining me on the walk - I was so fortunate with the conditions that day, incredible views all along!
Thank you so much for you video! Wishing you a happy and prosperous weekend!
Thank you for tagging along with me on the walk - hope you had a lovely Easter weekend too đ
Lovely walk, you picked a great day to do it
Couldnât have been more lucky with the weather for a winterâs day! Thanks for joining me on the walk đđ»đ
Love the horseshoe. Loughrigg Avenue for parking in Ambleside, never failed to get a space there.
Yeah itâs a good one! And good shout, will try that next time đđ»
Looks a cracking route.
It really is a spectacular hike to do!
Dear Christine, Iâm a new follower. Thank you for sharing the Videos. The aera looks very good đđ» I'm looking forward to the other videos đ€
Hi Gerold, so glad to have you join me on my outdoor adventures - thanks for tagging along đđđ»
Spectacular day and walk up Christine. You couldn't ask for a clearer one for the views. I imagine you did warm up after - the inclines take care of that. Mind you you had kind of plateaued by then. I imagine you will get to Helvellyn. Not one you want to do on a bad day. Well, good going. I bet you got back down buzzing. All the best. Mark
Thanks Mark - as you say, couldn't have hoped for better conditions! Most definitely didn't feel the cold for too long thankfully. Yes hopefully one day I'll be able to enjoy that climb - not one to underestimate! Thanks for tagging along & so pleased you're able to be back out walking too now đ
@@shefreelyroams A pleasure Christine. For sure a grand day - see you on that big hill then. I was out again on the weekend. Ye ha - getting stronger. Peace.
Absolutely stunning scenery thank you ,
Thanks Steve, I had perfect conditions to thank for that! Absolutely stunning views the entire hike - glad you enjoyed the video đđ
I hiked Fairfield a few times when I was a house-officer in UK, more than 20 years ago. I have since hiked many places in the world, yet I still think Lake District as the best. Thank you for the upload.
The Lake District really does provide a unique atmosphere that Iâm yet to find anywhere else too! Glad you enjoyed the video & I imagine your walk more than 20 years ago was quite a bit quieter than now! Thanks for tagging along đ
Christine - it's a pleasure to see how your walks make you happy! âșI like the music too! đž
Thanks John, really happy to hear you enjoy the music & that it comes across my love for walking/outdoors in the videos!đđ
What an absolute beaut of a day, stunning weather and amazing views đđ..thanks for sharing your day đđ
It was an absolute stunner for winter, couldnât have asked for better conditions! Thanks for coming along with me đđ
Another great video Christine! I did a section of that walk when I did alcock tarn last summer, was a lot warmer tho! đ will be trying the full walk for sure. There are lots of videos on CZcams like yours but yours are easily the best, you should be on the telly! đđ
Aw thank you for the kind words & support - really happy to hear youâre enjoying the videos đđ definitely recommend trying the full walk out if youâve got good conditions and a full day in the Lakes this summer! Canât go too wrong with this one, views throughout đđ»
Amazing landscape bathed in sunlight, positive energy. Beautiful video as always. Thanks a lot for sharing. Greetings Jan
Thanks Jan for joining me - the conditions were just incredible, so beautiful! Glad youâre still enjoying the videos - hope youâre well đ
Another spectacular adventure, great edit & breathtaking views. Lovely narrating voice. Thanks for letting us tag along & have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks for coming along with me on it, hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend too đ really happy to hear you enjoyed the video đđ»đ
A great video. This is the Lakeland classic and there are many videos that concentrate on the peaks but especially in the early part of the video you captured some of the stunning views that most videos miss so thank you for sharing.
Thatâs so lovely to hear - thanks Russell, pleased you enjoyed the video & like me appreciate some of the earlier views of the two lakes & valley on this circular đ
You deserve many more subscribers! Love watching your videos - so peaceful. Thank you! xx
Thank you Wayne! Iâm so happy to hear youâre enjoying them & cheers for the support, itâs genuinely so lovely to hear âșïžđ
Thanks again for sharing your beautiful adventure, it looked like a stunning day. I love getting my Lake District fix through your wonderful channel. Beautifully crafted filming.đđđ
Thanks again for tagging along with me David, it was a beautiful day - couldnât have asked for better conditions in winter! So pleased to hear youâre enjoying the videos & able to experience the Lakes via my channel, makes me very happy to hear đđđ„Ÿ
If you keep walking them Iâll keep tagging along. Looking forward to the next one. I canât think itâll be long before you get an avalanche of subscribers. Beautiful filming â€ïžđ
A Lakeland classic, well done, and you made it look so easy. We did the same route but didn't get your weather! However, when the clouds cleared it was stunning. I would agree that the descent is almost never ending but the view of Windermere is just special. Nice having a camera operator! Helps you get such a good production. Great video, regards, Ashley
Thank you, pleased to hear you enjoyed this video too đ€ as you say, the views are spectacular on this route, and definitely made the length of the walk feel easier! Descent down to Ambleside was incredible in the early evening sun & yes, walking with others is less work too for me than using a tripod! Take care & thanks again for the support đ«¶đ»
Perhaps it's just us but it's always good to see a food element included in a hike of this magnitude.
What sustained you through the 8 ( sorry, 7 ) hours?
Very good point, Iâm conscious that everyone requires different sustenance for a day hike - I tend to have snacks in my pockets to munch on the go and then stop once for lunch - I can incorporate more of that into the videos if thatâs of interest to people! Thanks again for the support, so lovely âșïž
Beautiful. I'm new to your channel and loving your videos. Thank you for sharing. I did the Helm Crag route yesterday after watching your Helm Crag video last week. It was a wonderful route đ
Thanks Nicola for tagging along, it makes me so happy to hear youâre enjoying the videos & that you managed to do Helm Crag last week, how were the conditions? đđ€
The conditions were perfect. Sunny but not too warm with amazingly clear views, perfect đ
Great work with the sound on this one, Christine.
The quality has definitely gone up a level.
Thank you Rob, so pleased to hear you noticed the change in editing and that you enjoyed the video đđđđ»
@@shefreelyroams Really enjoyed the latest one today. Things are really coming along with the production. Only two other things I might mention if I may, the wind is obviously trying to 'talk over you' in places so a mic with a windmuff might work wonders and also........ I promise this will be it...... if you horizontally flip your 'selfie' clips in post, the landscape behind you will not be 'mirrored' so we'll get a better idea of what your location really looks like. Right that's it, I'll shut up now. Great job! :)
@@robbrooks5263 thank you Rob, I really appreciate all the feedback - Iâm keen to make the videos as pleasant to watch as possible! A few others have mentioned getting a mic so will look into that đđ» and thatâs a really good shout on the selfie shots, I hadnât thought of doing that so great suggestion, thank you :) đ«¶đ»
@@shefreelyroams Glad you accepted it in the same spirit in which is was offered, Christine. The internet is full of critics and ordinarily I wouldn't offer unsolicited advice but because we're enjoying your channel's enthusiasm and sunny demeanour here, I just thought I'd risk being annoying. :)
Onwards and upwards!!!
@@robbrooks5263 of course, not annoying at all :) and exactly, couldnât agree more!
If you want to get the best out of this walk, do it the other way round. The eastern arm, from Ambleside, is far lesstedious than the trudge up the western arm and if you do it this way round you get the benefit of the most fantastic and widespread views directly in front of you all the way down, with no having to stop and turn round to look at it.
Very valid points to consider - thanks for sharing, I actually quite enjoyed the views back to Ambleside on the return stretch and the grassy slopes on the western arm are a welcome relief when climbing! Youâre right that itâs a trudge though and coming down on the east with rocks under foot isnât easy either!
Are you walking with someone or do you use a drone ?
On this hike I was walking with others but often I hike solo, if thatâs the case I use a tripod & drone together to get the shots. For this video, I had others help! đ
