Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Spring Gala 2013 LYD & Restored Coaches 7 & 17

  • A large crowd, but unfortunately a fierce, cold north westerly wind turned out for the second day of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway's May gala. A special event in several ways. Firstly to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the restored Woody Bay station to the public, but more importantly, to welcome home the first two beautifully restored L&B coaches, numbers seven and seventeen. With "Lyd" making a short visit from our friends at the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales, it was now possible, for the first time since 29th September 1935, to ride in L&B coaches hauled by a L&B design loco. What a sight they made too, and the restoration team are already at work on the next coach, number 16, a third class brake. You can clearly see how much bigger the loading gauge (body size) is compared with the stop gap "Thorpe Park" coaches. The original 16 coaches were built by the Bristol Carriage & Wagon company for the railway's opening in 1898. Coach 17 was unique, built in 1911 by a local company at the railway's Pilton works in Barnstaple, for lightly used winter services. It could accommodate all passenger requirements in one coach, it has first class smoking and non smoking, third class smoking and non smoking compartments as well as a guard's brake. Chatting to one of the restoration team, he told me it was quite a wrench to let the coaches go from the workshop after working on them for so many years, not to mention all those muddy boots stomping around in them !!
    Also visiting this day was Dr John Prideaux, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway chairman. He was director of Intercity in the late 1980s and also co-wrote the classic 1964, David and Charles published book on the history of the L&B. He rode in the first class observation compartment at (04:00) and is seen briefly in the middle window.
    Another visitor from the Statfold Barn Railway, Tamworth, was Hudswell Clarke loco GP39 formally "Bronllwyd" originally built for the Surrey County Council in 1930 for construction of the Guildford bypass before moving to a Welsh slate quarry. The Driver told me she was a "lovely little engine to drive" Seen here in its recently resorted original livery.
    UPDATE: August 2013. Staggering progress has been made on the construction of coach 16, it will be finished and appear at this year's (2013) Autumn gala 28th & 29th September. The whole build taking just a few months. The restoration team seem to have a production line set up in Essex.
    UPDATE: 19th September 2013. Coach 16 Delivered to Woody Bay. Amazing! It was just a pile of wood in June!
    If you think the railway looks good, imagine what 19 miles would be like. Travelling by bus from Barnstaple the road follows the old trackbed for much of the journey. It's all there, waiting. You can help make it happen.

    Fantastic video! Wish I could have been there. Great to see the Manning Wardle and the heritage coaches together. Shame the liveries clash though.

    So it seems..very interesting.Thanks for pointing that out. Watching the Evercreech TV programmes as a kid is why I always use a tripod as he advocated.

    Looks fantastic! Thank god they chose the beautiful Indian red and white livery for the coaches which goes stunningly well with the Green loco unlike the grotty original Southern green [ non-matching ] coaching stock colour.

    Thank you..I had already seen your film and envied the cab ride!! I use a Panasonic SD900 which is generally very good although it has one or two odd quirks.

    Terrific, beautifully shot. My colleague, Andrew Johnston, and I filmed on Sunday in horizontal rain! You might like to have a look at Lynton & Barnstaple Time Warp. Andrew is ex-BBC and made The Little Train to Lynton and Return to Evercreech Junction. We made "Perchance it's Awake!" a few years ago as a sort of third in the Little Train series, but now we are updating with Lyd and the coaches. Love to know what camera you used. I'm using the Sony FS700 and a little Panasonic TZ30.

      Thank you very much... Glad you enjoyed it and the railway's just going to get better and better!! We are trying to recreate the railway as closely as possible to the original rather than a modern interpretation of it.
