  • Skydiver Daniel Herndon was performing a demonstration flight over Taft Stadium in Oklahoma City when he lost his main parachute. He managed to finish his descent with the reserve parachute and successfully landed on the stadium field, along with the ball to be used in a soccer match between Chivas and Oklahoma City Energy FC. Herndon’s friend, Jenifer Miller, was able to catch the moment of landing.

    He didn't "lose" anything. He had line twists he decided he could not remedy so he carried out the drills every skydiver is taught, cut away the main, and deployed his reserve and landed safely.

    He didn't lose his parachute, he opened his main and had some line twists so he cut his main parachute away (you can see him pull the red handle on the right which cuts away his main chute, then there is a silver handle he pulled on his left that you can't see in the video that deployed his white reserve chute. For those of you who don't skydive, there are 2 parachutes: you have your main chute, and then a reserve just in case things get weird :) Honestly, he panicked (like everyone does), and maybe could have cleared the twists by pulling the risers apart and kicking his legs a bit harder, but when your parachute spins like that you're losing altitude fast; he got down safe and that means he did the right thing! I love skydiving, it is my absolute favorite past time, and his line twist deployment is actually fairly common, especially if you pull your reserve while not very stable in the air.

      Jessica Breeding You are on the right track ,but l am sure it's water off a ducks back from the comments being made . 1962-1977 l was in 16 Para Bgde. and tried skydiving just to see what it was like , in '64 .Military jumps were always an "Uplifting experience" and my sense of humour prevailed ! Whilst serving a 1 year tour in Bahrein in '66 ,the chance to do a 10 day free-fall course arose . No pun intended ! So off we went to Aden , which was a Civil War Zone ! Our instructor was a very experienced Worldwide skydiver and all was going well ,until l pulled my first reserve on my 13th jump .A grain of sand had jammed the ripcord ( tolerence free housing) , and so began a spate of white 'chutes being deployed. With 2 reserves to my credit l gained unwanted notoriety , but it did not end there. Back in England by 1967 another chance to redeem myself had me doing a continuation course , at APA Centre ,Netheravon . Captive ripcords were being used ,causing me to become unstable as l struggled to get a clean pull .Along came my 3rd reserve , and being such a expert a good landing ensued 😁. After 49 jumps l quit but had my first ever military reserve pull during a Low Level night jump from a Andover supply aircraft over Salisbury Plain . 16 twists and a reserve that did not open ,a weapons container strapped to my leg , the PX chute unwound seconds before landing . Walking away from that and seeing all my grimfaced comrades was so enjoyable . Wishing you safe and happy landings ,Jessica .

      Brian Lane- Who are you to say that? He was doing a demo jump and demo jumps like that usually go from 5000 ft. He delayed before opening his main, so there was already a good 2000ft loss...then time for canopy opening and trying to kick out of twists... another 1500 ft loss... he probably hit his hard deck and chopped. No one can sit back and say he did the wrong thing. He did what was right for him in that situation and lived to tell the tale, so step off your high horse. No one should be critical of another skydiver chopping because it is their decision and they are using their emergency procedures for what they feel is an emergency.

  • @hwhack
    @hwhack Před 8 lety +105

    He didn't lost his chute. It's called a cutaway.
    There are several ways the main chute may deploy incorrectly. Divers trained for this.
    If the main chute doesn't respond to user inputs to correct the issue (can can see the diver trying to untie the chute for 5 seconds), you detach from the main chute, get stable, and deploy the secondary chute.
    This is a normal part of skydiving. It happens to everyone eventually.

    After the freefall he was flat and stable when he deployed his canopy. When he looked up he had about three line twists. This will prevent the steering lines from working and may cause it to not fly straight. Normally you can just kick around to clear the line twists and continue on but in this case while he was kicking the canopy went into a spin. The rate of decent greatly increases, the centrifugal force makes you appear to weigh a lot more making the kick out more difficult. At this point he made the decision to cut away his main canopy and deploy his reserve canopy. One handle cuts away and another deploys the reserve. At 1:34 you can see the red cut away handle with yellow cables and the silver reserve deployment handle. Stash the handles and continue to the landing site. Normally the skydiver might follow the $1000+ canopy to the ground if at his normal drop zone where he would know where are all the obstacles like power lines are located but he is flying a demo jump in an area filled with unknown hazards so the original target is the best option. It is unknown if the original canopy was returned to him. Most of the time when people see the falling detached canopy they swear they see a person flailing around in it. Fortunately, this usually leads to better recovery.

    Guys. The first parachute is a performance parachute for turning and having fun. It will sometimes tangle up from very specific wind patterns through the equipment or wear from use. The reserve is a full parachute that doesn’t do anything exciting and will open 100% of the time unless the equipment is damaged. When packed by the special professionals, the equipment is brand new and/or completely undamaged. When the main chute has a problem, which happens to most all experienced jumpers at least once in their career before they stop, you cut it away and use the boring one lol

    I'm working on getting my Skydiving license right now (AFP level 5). As soon as you pull your first parachute, you ask yourself "Is it there? Is it square? Is it steerable?" His first parachute had a line twist. I get those all the time, you just have to kick out of it (as though you're in a swing set) and the lines automatically untwist. If you can't untwist within 2 seconds you should immediately cut away that parachute and pull your reserve (which he did). Skydiving is dangerous, but it's also a lot of fun!

      This looks to me like a planned "demo" (or demonstration) jump. These are planned, for the entertainment of spectators. The jump itself, over a crowded urban area is approved by Air Traffic Control and the jumpers are qualified to make these demanding jumps. There would have been a ground crew as well and they would have dispatched someone to find and recover the lost main canopy. I hope they found it and in good condition, because the canopy alone would have cost over $2000.

I didn’t panic, though I did think about jettisoning the main chute and using the reserve, but I decided I had time to work out the tangles. It worked a treat, no problem at all. I ended up on the cross on the ground we were supposed to land on so even had time to guide it too. It was a two thousand foot jump with a static line. The tangle was caused by me not jumping from the plane properly,( I spun round before and during the parachute opening). Happy days😳.

    I heard you don't feel the drop from plane but if you release parachute and now you're kinda spinning in air and see ur lines entangled... You release that one and the backup parachute opens... But when you're cut from the first one do you feel that drop?
