On large bore tenor I played 5G and 4G sized mouthpieces for years and was never happy with the results. Then I met Doug Elliott and after describing my playing characteristics to him he recommended playing a 3G sized rim. I always thought that would be too big, but on his XT104/G+ mouthpiece I feel right at home and never looked back. High range was the same as before despite the larger rim, but low range and endurance improved, and I could get more volume with less effort. When I play small bore I use the same rim with a shallower cup. My face doesn’t like 6.5AL or 7C rims.
I do a lot more bass trombone playing now, and after trying several mouthpieces of varying sizes it seems like a 1G rim with a 1 1/4G cup works best. I just got a Wedge 114D, which he describes as a Schilke 60 rim with a 59 cup. I used it in a performance today and it was so comfortable and super easy to play.

Thank you for this! I’m currently trying to decide between 2 mouthpieces.

I had problems with the response on my tuba. I used a Bach 18 for years. It drove me nuts. I started to question my gear and settled on a Rudolf meinl 10 mpc. Much improved response while keeping the sound qualities of the Bach.

I recently had to change from a Doug Yeo mouthpiece to a Bach 1 1/2 G gold plated mouthpiece because I am allergic to nickel silver and I am still working with the Bach 1 1/2 G but improvement has happened

Glad you were able to recognize the allergy; some players will just try to power through an issue like that and it can make playing just miserable for them...

Hi, what you think about the Schilke 51 within the trombone, I was thinking in change these mouthpieces, I feel that I get overflow the mouthpieces, and also the mouthpieces make it difficult to play a smooth sound, I was thinking of getting a Greg black 5g. let me know what you think about it, greatings from Panama.

It's easy to overblow a tiny mouthpiece and wear yourself out. He's a big guy with big features. Shouldn't be playing on a 9.
