That makes no sense IF you have it in writing that the deposit is refundable (and states when it is refundable, vs when it is not)...or...if law dictates that it is refundable, for a period of time and under which conditions. I was a dealer for years and sold many cars, while taking deposits to hold nearly all of them. There was never an issue and there was never an unhappy customer. Those who wouldn't leave deposits (because they were sure they'd be scammed), even when others were interested in the vehicles for sale, only ever missed out on the vehicles they liked and were usually unhappy about missing out on them. Many even tried to blame me for missing out, due to their unwillingness to leave deposits to hold, but that never worked because the mistakes were always theirs.

    Here’s a great dealership story.
My salesman, who I had bought 8-10 cars from over the years in Northern Ontario, Canada called me in ‘21. He told me they had an allocation for a ‘22 C8 and, unless I ordered something freaky, they were inviting me to spec the order, without a commitment to purchase. Zero down.
When it showed up, I was hooked, of course.
I said to the dealer principal:”hey, I’ve bought 8-10 cars from you guys. How about a discount”.
They gave me 500 bucks off of a ‘22 2LT red tintmist stingray. My dealer principal said: “don’t tell anyone about this. You are most certainly the only person in Canada who’s gotten a penny off MSRP for a new ‘Vette”.
    Now, that’s customer service.

In July 2023 I had a Dealer that had a C8 listed for 89K, when I went to buy it they said they didn't sell any vette for less than 10K above MSRP. I walked. I then called Lone Star Chevrolet in Houston, and asked 2 questions of Ian Jackson the sales person. How much deposit, and how much over MSRP? I was told no deposit and nothing over MSRP. I placed my order mid Sept., and the price increase happened on Oct. 2nd, 2024. I inquired about price protection and was told I'd receive it. I paid for the car, and then picked the car up on Nov 15th at the NCM, and approx. 35 days later I received the price difference between the old pricing and the increased pricing. Ian was a pleasure to do business with, as was Lone Star Chevrolet, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I highly recommend Lone Star and especially Ian if you're looking to purchase a new corvette. In just the last3 months they've had several C8s fully loaded as well as several Z06s. Do NOT be afraid to walk away from a crappy dealer!

Buyers flake WAY too often. As a new car dealer, I would never...EVER...order a vehicle for someone without them having skin in the game. Money down equals a commitment to purchase. Keeping a deposit, while not coming through for a customer, though, is another issue, entirely, and is definitely NOT ok.

I'm in the market for a C8 and I noticed a dealer right up the street in Venice Fl had the same car I was looking for. I noticed the sticker had a market adjustment of 40%. I called and offered to purchase at MSRP to which they asked if I had any leeway to which I said no and they thanked me for my time. Today I picked up the same car at another dealership for MSRP. $40K market adjustment on a $101k vehicle!!!

It is in their dna, deeply entrenched in generations of the management there. Have tried similar things to various friends and family over the years. they will keep doing it. will take a lawsuit that damages them harshly to get them to change their practices.

my Grandfather purchased a truck from denoyer in the late 70's. He always had dealerships install zebart undercoating, he believed in the product. Anyway, they charged him for it and did not install the product. He had to get a lawyer involved, at the time he was a uaw autoworker In a Buchanan michigan axle plant, and his friends (legal team) at the union hall made some calls. The matter was quickly resolved. But it took a call to gm corporate, and them breathing down denoyers throats. They are popping up in record numbers across the country and they all follow

but from the service dept. NO. They just make even MORE copious amounts of $$ from that.

The last car we bought was a Certified Pre-owned with extremely low mileage, and what we ran into is that the dealer wouldn’t complete the deal because they couldn’t come up with the title. We finally did get the car, but it took nearly a month to get it done. The car (a 2017 Chevy Impala) has been great and was actually worth waiting for. The dealer (Bergstrom of Wisconsin) has been extremely good in all other respects, and I would actually recommend them. As I understand it, Bergstrom was just following the law, but it was frustrating at the time. All of Bergstrom’s deals are no dicker sticker type, so everyone would get the same deal on the same car no matter what. NICE!!

Very smart to file a complaint to the State Attorney General, I have done that myself 2 times and the State Attorney General got the situation fixed for me both times, it works in most cases. When the State Attorney General contacts them they know you are serious and you are not playing around.
I would also file a complaint with the BBB, they do not like that, and that will also help to get the $5k deposit back.

    @davew9258 Před 4 měsíci

There is a simple step that you must take whenever putting down a deposit in this situation and that is to stipulate a time limit for the dealership to deliver the vehicle.
The dealership knows in advance when they will have an open allocation and predict when an order will arrive. They can even build in additional time, and if it’s not acceptable then the buyer can seek an alternative dealership to do business with. Then if the deadline comes and the car hasn’t arrived, the buyer can decide if he wants to extend the deadline, or void the contract based on the dealership breaching the terms they agreed to. And then try to negotiate a lower price if the vehicle was scheduled to arrive soon, etc.
Time limits should always be agreed to whenever signing a contract, so they can’t hold your money hostage until the terms are in their favor.

Has the dealership delivered Corvettes? If so, how many? If something says he is #7 and more than that have come in, then what is their justification for not giving him his deposit as they seem to not want to give him a car.

Here is my recent story about bad dealership and brand practices! I have leased seven GM vehicles including four GMC trucks all on 3-year lease terms! After last lease in 2021 GM altered lease policy to only allow you to sell leased product back to GM dealer, you could not sell to car max or another brand and pocket equity! After going to three GM dealerships and getting low ball offers of 36-38000 for a Black Denali with 3.0 Duramax! They refused to discount and with terrible residual payments were over $1000.00 for new GMC truck! I found a Ford dealer out of town that also owned a GM Chevy dealership, traded it to them, got $42,000, bought Ford F 150 XLT with 18,000 miles per year for 36 months for $719.00 per month! Do not get screwed by this rule! Find a dealer with multiple brands that will pay more for your GMC brand and buy what you want with good discounts! Dealers outside of major towns will deal and pay more for trades!

A dealer in Dearborn , Michigan sold a 1993 40th Corvette , new back in 1993 to my wife ( not my wife then) and cheater her good.
They added the finance charges , 10114.56 to the price of the car , 1566.85 for tax, license & title, 1070.00 for labor , what is this labor charge , insurance 3124.68 what is this insurance charge she had AAA, Then , credit life 986.74 , health & accident 2137.94 this charge is a rip also, then 11.5 % for 65 months at $633.00 = 41145.00 total for the Vette and
she didn't get her GM employee discount at all.
What dealer adds the finance charges to the car then finance it costing double finance charges ? She just wanted the car and the dealer stuck it to her.

I never thought I would say this, but after the "THE RAKE" thru covid. And we need to stop calling them ADM's, it's stealing equity. I NEVER charged customers over book or msrp. This is only acceptable because of the good ole deal that was setup in the 60's, to limit manufacturers from selling directly to the public.
