Incredible how they make you believe that the old man in the beginning was Tom Hanks character Captain Miller only to find out at the end it was Private Ryan standing over Captain Millers grave. Such amazing story telling.
Damn right! It’s like they’re emphasizing that Tom Hanks’ character literally gave his life to Matt Damon’s character. By making him literally replace the character we first assumed
War movies with Dad? I remember those days with my old man well. Good times, would lead to some good conversation on life as well. If y'all are interested in some other good war movies. Full metal jacket, we were soldiers, black hawk down are some good ones. There are many others that people have mentioned in the comments as well. Much love my dudes
Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Braveheart, Terminator 2 and a bunch of other classics that I remember watching with my old man.
@@0mnicide My dad also died in 2013, but i was quite older than you (42), and I guess my dad was also older than yours (79). He was in love with old war movies from the 1950s and 1960s, but he also enjoyed a good blockbuster thing, like Indiana Jones, Gladiator, etc. He was deeply moved with this one, and also with Schindler's List. When I went to the movies, to see something in the big screen, it was always with him, and I gave up on cinemas when he passed away.
The most touching part for me is when he asks his wife, 'Tell me I've led a good life. Tell me I'm a good man'. He has spent everyday trying to be worthy of the sacrifice the others made, and some 50 years later he is still unsure if it was enough. My father was veteran who served in the Pacific. When we watched Saving Private Ryan some 15-20 years ago he asked me to turn it off after the scene where the ladies were typing the letters to the families of the fallen soldiers.

My great-uncle served in WW1. As I am now sixty-one years of age, and a Canadian Military Veteran myself from the late seventies, my great-uncle used to freak me out when I was a kid. An old man who studdered like crazy. Now to a five-year-old, this was intense. Years later when I became an adult, my mother explained that Edward John had enlisted at the age of seventeen, in the late eighteen hundreds to fight in Europe. While engaged in hand-to-hand combat at the battle of Paschendale, he was bayonetted by a German soldier and left on the battlefield for twelve hours, holding his guts in his stomach. Yet, he survived and was invalided out of the service for his wounds. After leaving the Canadian Army, he began to develop a studder, that become more profound as he got older. His doctor explained that the severe trauma of his injuries, had left him with such a lingering fear from the trauma and pain of being left in the cold and the mud, surrounded by so many dead bodies, that he never fully recovered. in defense of the soldier on the beach who took his helmet off: That helmet wouldnt have stopped a direct hit, it was designed for protection against shrapnel and ricochets. that direct hit would've done the same thing weather he had his helmet on or not.

When this movie came out, it was so realistic, that actual D-Day veterans that watched the movie, had to leave because they were smelling the diesel fumes from the landing craft while in the theater.

3:33 those soldiers were actually confirmed to be saying "dont shoot, I'm not a German i am Czech" during the German invasion the forced a lot of Czech men into their army to fight with them, obviously against their will. Sad little Easter egg.

This is one of if not my favorite reactions I’ve watched. You and your fathers relationship is beautiful. It reminds me of watching this movie in the theater with my dad when I was 11. I eagerly waited for it to come out on vhs and when it finally did my dad said “son go into your room, let me watch the first 30 minutes by myself then I’ll come and get you.” I didn’t understand at the time but he wanted to cry without me seeing him do it. I’ve watched this movie hundreds of times, it’s probably my favorite movie but I’ll always remember these moments with my father. Keep up the good work boys, bless y’all. ✊❤️

The German soldier who kills Mellish when Upham doesn't bring the ammo, is the SAME soldier who killed Boyd and they let him walk.

Every time I see this movie I cant believe my grandfather somehow survived being in the first wave on Juno beach
Yeah, might've not been as bad as Omaha or some in the Pacific theater but that's just different degrees in hell, you're still in hell. And first wave is still first wave.

My grandfather fought on juno as well but never made it alive. I'm sure his life helped in some way. Rest in peace.

I miss my grandfathers. One served in the pacific, the other in Europe under Patton. The elderly version of Matt Damon's character looks a lot like my grandfather who served under Patton. This movie always brings a tear to my eye...

Yup sure did. Crazy coincidence. Goes to show that morality is a burden when at war.
With all the video games and drones, most of us (esp. from USA) don't know or have forgotten what real war is. We have forgotten what sacrifices were made for freedom. Today I continue pray for peace.
There's another great Tom Hanks movie, one based on true events and history of "Apollo 13" (1995). You guys would enjoy that one! ✌😎

You can’t help but giving respect to every soldier in every battle knowing that they came home with baggage and having to deal with it in their lifetime they never get over it. Having friends that die and seeing what they saw. Much respect to all soldiers and thank you.
They had a special showing for D Day Veterans. It was so realistic, they had to pause the movie until the Veterans could continue watching.
THIS IS A TRUE STORY(except for the Private Ryan addition) ALL OF THIS HAPPENED JUNE 6, 1944. We may have another problem like this brewing now in Ukraine with Russia invading. Incidentally, Egypt is the fourth largest recipient in the world of American financial and military aid.

This is really the only movie ever made, that makes me cry within the first 5 minutes, and the last 5 minutes (and even your father's reaction made me cry again). Yes, this movie has a huge cast, from Walter White to Jeff Malone, Dominic Torreto to John Adams, seems like everybody is in this film.

A lot of D-Day veterans said after watching the movie that the only thing the movie didn't portray was the smell

Having never killed anyone I'd imagine it changes you that first time, to know you've taken another person's life, even if they were "the enemy". Upham was a "virgin" at killing, as the Captain said every person he kills makes him feel farther away - One wonders, was he right or wrong to let that guy live, only for him to kill the Captain later? Is there any right or wrong? The Captain wondered how he'd ever tell his wife about it... It seems obvious from the way Ryan's wife reacted to the grave he had never spoken about it with her - his own wife of probably 50 years by then, did Upham survive the war? And if he did, do you think he ever spoke about it? Many veterans developed a host of issues from what we now call PTSD ("battle fatigue" back then) and came home to suffer alcoholism, relationship issues, etc, and often with no help.
What hits me..... is that at the end you see that Tom hanks characters grave was one of hundreds of thousands like it, and each one of those crosses have a unique story to them. Just like this one.

For infantry veterans Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, The Thin Red Line, and The Hurt Locker are difficult to get through without face palming at all the inaccuracies. Especially The Hurt Locker. Laughed my ass off during that one.
My father was at Anzio. He avoided watching this movie for a long time. He didn’t want to see the D Day scene.

I took my son to see this film when it first came out in theaters. I wanted him to see the harsh realities of war and to understand that freedom is never free. Thank you for reacting to this. I think you and your father would enjoy Band of Brothers. After making this movie, Spielberg and Hanks made Band of Brothers, which is a 10 part series on HBO. It’s the true stories of Easy Company, 506PIR, 101st Airborne Division. It’s an incredible piece of cinema.
You should also check out Black Hawk Down.

Battles like this, Guadal Canal and others are the reason why the US no longer does Opposed Beach Landings. The initial losses in taking the beaches are too high. Vehicles like the LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cussion/ Hover Craft) can move most vehicles including tanks to almost 70% of beaches in the world.
