No way you were able to pull the vacuum out before it re-expanded. You need to use upholstery batting from where the vacuum nozzle enters the bag up to the mattress itself. This allows the air to continue pulling out of the bag and not form a seal, cutting off the vacuum. It's the same technique used in vacuum bagging carbon fiber pieces.
