How to remove pee odor from mattress
Cleaning urine out of mattress with this solution will also get the smell out of it.
So we're going to get pee out of this memory foam mattress. It actually has a layer of latex on top then memory foam. We had to test it. You just have to be careful because memory foam is like a giant sponge and the last thing you want is mold! This is a NEWER method that doesn't clog up the spray bottle.
And I know you guys have kids or pets that wet the bed (or maybe you did because you got too drunk or something) and that's why you're here, but let's hear what happened here...
This is my friend Ronnie's mattress and her kids peed on it - so there are urine rings on the mattress. Her husband is really scared we're going to ruin their mattress but I'm confident it's going to work. And since the first time, I've learned a few things I'll give you more tips to make this even easier.
What you're going to need. I'll have the exact recipe we use down below in the video description.
How to clean pee off a bed
Here's what you need:
Dry towel to use to get liquid up if the pee is still wet. If it's really bad then spray water on it and use a dry towel to soak it up. This is like a pre-treatment. We don't need to do that but this is what you need.
Baking soda, if you have baking powder it has baking soda in it but baking soda is best
Hydrogen peroxide - we used 3%
Liquid dishwashing soap like Dawn, a few drops
Spray bottle
OPTIONAL
Fan
Vacuum cleaner or broom
Gloves
If you have wet spots then use a towel to soak up as much as possible - you'll probably want to wear gloves. But this is dried on.
Before we had you mix everything in the spray bottle but no matter what you do it's going to get clogged up. So we changed it up some to make it easier.
Spray with hydrogen peroxide and Dawn mixture on top
Add baking soda
Put fan on
Wait to dry to vacuum up the residue. If you don't have a vacuum cleaner that's ok, use a broom or dust off as much of the residue as you can.
Drying the Mattress
You could also put your mattress outside on a sunny day, it's going to take some work if it's a king size but we want to let them sleep on this tonight and it's summer so here we go...
You're not going to need to rinse this off or anything and it not only cleans the stains but it also takes out the smell. Because we all know how stinky it can be.
It took a few hours (3) for this mattress to dry with the fans pointed on the wet spots.
AFTER it's cleaned...
Use a waterproof mattress protector. Coop is our favorite. Or an incontinence pad if it's always in the same area. We tested it with 14 cups of liquid, including about 10 of those cups real pee and it held perfectly.
Now if you have a crazy household and you think the sides of your mattress might get peed on or stuff spilled on I'm going to say you need one that's waterproof on the sides too. For that we recommend the Idle waterproof mattress protector.

This works!!! I love that it is so simple. Today is my second time within a 4 month span. First was my kids bed and now my bed. I don’t have fans so I open the window so the breeze can come in. Took a few hours for it to dry and then vacuumed it up. No smell and no stains. Thank you.

@@Hey_Jamieuhhh, I had no experience with mold… only if you don’t properly dry it with a fan/opened windows or you oversaturate a stain.
I had my doubts, but this removed stains from my tempurpedic so well. I had to repeat it a few times but it’s looking great now.

Tried your method on my 20 year old Sleep Number Pillow top mattress. It took out the stains with the stains that bled from the Clorox spray cleaner I've used through the years. Saved the $168 quoted on line for a 2 hr. cleaning session, Awesome!

I used this method to clean up some body staining/sweat stain. Worked wonders. I may have used too much baking soda because the cleanup was a little messy but definitely thankful for this video. My mattress looks new again.

My son has been dry all week, I thought it was safe to let him sleep without a diaper....I was wrong.
Over night I layed a towel on top of it as we slept, then in the morning I covered it in baking soda and a couple hours later I found this video. Very helpful. We have a memory foam mattress pad on top of the matress, wasn't sure if it could be saved.
Shoot and the same thing happened to Ronnie, even after this video! I think she didn't want to remake the bed yet so no waterproof mattress protector means she'll have to do this again 😭

just want to add that some Dollar stores have everything you need there. small bottle of hydrogen peroxide, small box of baking soda. and spray bottle. also available at any walmart or target store.. all of which are cheaper than amazon. no need fans, just let the sun dry it out

You're the only one that noted about the B. Soda clogging the spray nozzle. I believe if the straw part is large .. Maybe? No clogging but a similar cleaning solution does .

News flash to your friends husband: they Mattress was ruined when his toddler peed on it. You are going to attempt to save it, so even if you fail, it's no worse than before.
I’ve used 1/4 rubbing alcohol to 3/4 distilled white vinegar and few drops dish soap as the spray then sprinkle baking soda for pet stains in carpet. Will try this on my mattress, thanks.

Ok, I have a memory foam pillow top mattress & this video came just in time. I see from the comments this method does work. My toddlers peed in my bed I cleaned it but it stained even more. I can unzip my mattress & its like its a big covering which is the pillow top & once I take it off there's the memory foam mattress itself with latex over it. I guess my question is did you have too unzip then clean it from the inside? But half way typing I realized this mattress was not pillow top. So in my case do I take the pillow top off & use this method so the memory foam don't mold or it doesn't matter its all about how it drying the correct way so it doesn't mold?
Thank you, this worked on a pillow top layer memory foam mattress. I used my Jiffy steamer quickly not getting it too wet and saturated with a drop of laundry detergent, water and hydrogen peroxide first then sprinkled and scrubbed in the baking soda and later brushed it off - no vacuum. The steamer let me keep the mattress on the top bunk and allowed the cleaning solution go through the entire mattress so I did not have to turn it.
I don't think I should use the dream toilet anymore
Tied this today. Yes, it works! 2 things. 1) Had to clean the entire surface. That way the color is consistent. 2) Added a couple of drops of bleach. Lastly I let it set and dry overnight. Then vacuum clean. Overall I’m very happy with the results.
This works AMAZING ! It does take repeated vacuuming to get the baking soda all picked up. I suggest using a vacuum with a bag.
Another idea is to use a broom and sweep off what you can first. But as you said, it’s worth it because it works so well!
I just bought a hybrid and used it last night and my one 3yr old toddler peed on it this morning because she couldn't hold it in anymore by the time she came to me..
What about the pee that maybe got down too far into the mattress? I have an organic cotton mattress and I’m concerned about any underlying pee after I’ve finished cleaning it with my GreenSpot portable cleaner.

For king size mattress I used a few bottles of peroxide mixed with dawn and mr clean febreze scent and evenly soaked the mattress (also had sweat stains to get rid of and also wanted entire mattress white again). I just dumped it right on the mattress so it would soak in deep where the urine was. Then sprinkled baking soda evenly over mattress (strainer or powdered sugar sprinkler works nicely). Used gloves and really worked the baking soda in. Let it marinate for about an hour then turned on heater, ceiling fan, and dehumidifier. Closed AC vents in bedroom and closed off bedroom door. Even though I really soaked the mattress in cleaner those 3 machines dried it out quickly. Vacuumed the whole thing. I took a damp rag to any dried clumpy areas of baking soda. Then vacuumed again. Let it dry a bit longer just for good measure. Then remade the bed. I did this extreme process because I was afraid the urine had really soaked in deep. I didn’t feel like the sprayer was going to do enough for my situation. But for small/light areas I think a sprayer would suffice. Also when you go to the store, buy plenty of peroxide and baking soda…they are cheap and it beats having to run back to the store for more!

Tough to say because they're all different fabrics. Try in a hidden place to test. In our tests it didn't work because the area cleaned looked too different than the rest. It was too hard to get it evenly applied so some areas were lighter...

I bought a very large box of baking soda at Big Lots. It wasn't a name brand, but it works great & there's enough to do lots of cleaning.
If your not drying the mattress completely then put alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the mattress this well dry it completely and we’ll not mold also instead of using regular baking soda you could try washing soda it well not clump I have used it to get take stains off my carpet and sometimes you have to lay a white towel over the mattress to soak up the stain first

Problem with this is, some of the actual foams that are used within the matress will dissolve on contact with certain solvents especially alcohol. Be careful.
I tried this but mixed everything together in the bottle but the spot on my bed is rough now.
Did you scrub hard or maybe the fabric is more delicate?
Did not remove stains. Perhaps my Hydrogen Peroxide was too old. Will try again after buying newer Hydrogen Peroxide.

I was in tears from it being soooooo much. Our mattress was pricey so I figured it was ruined! It’s been peed on before by my son, but very small amounts. Great question. To be honest, I'm not sure but I'm doubtful. After we tested another mattress several times, it got mold inside the foam. It was so old and worn out we took it to the dump.

How to get old WATER stains out of an old regular mattress...I washed out the stain but the ridges of the water marks makes the bed look horrible and nasty. And the same thing with a memory foam, the yellow/brownish WATER stained edges...hydrogen peroxide only? I have already tried baking soda & water, still stained. And every time I try to get out the stain it get bigger because I go over the edges again and again. Help! Thank you : D
I've had good luck with ammonia and a steam cleaner. We used a microfiber cloth with ammonia and then followed with the steam and scrubbed with the cloth whole steaming. It took forever (it wasn't on this mattress and it was caused by getting rained on when moving a mattress) but it worked.

I tried this today on my king sized memory foam mattress and it worked wonders!
The trick is leaving it on for several hours. I soaked the areas with the solution and then sprinkled on the baking soda.
I went back an hour later and sprayed the solution over the baking soda.
I let it sit for about four hours under a ceiling fan on high and sunlight coming through the window all day.
Then I went back and vacuumed the baking soda off once it was dry.
No more stains!

I was surprised too. It took me off guard. I really had some stressful moments in this one! I almost thought it wasn’t going to work about half way through. But then when I learned the same thing happened again the next night, I couldn’t believe it!

It's true that it's not recommended to. I've never tried it but honestly I might.
I would if it's actually mostly the cover I'm cleaning. Or if the steam cleaner is hot enough and doesn't get the mattress very wet. And if I were careful not to get the memory foam too hot. I'd use an accessory like the triangle tool and not staying on am area for too long.
Some warranties will get voided but my question is how will they know. And warranties are mostly for manufacturing or extreme defects. So it's unlikely you'll end up using one.
I wouldn't chance it on my new Tempur-Pedic but I might on my 5 year old cheaper foam mattress.
What I wouldn't do? Use a carpet cleaner on it.
