Living Legacies is a series of documentaries that takes a deeper look into the traditional system of teaching in India, especially in the context of the performing arts. Featured herein are eminent musicians who have trained under illustrious teachers and represent great schools of Carnatic music. As they recall their discipleship, they bring to light facets of their teachers that would otherwise be lost in the passage of time. They proudly hold onto the values they have imbibed amidst changing times and trends. Even with fairly busy performing careers, they have trained several students in their respective styles, passing on their musical legacies to future generations.
Their stories are a throwback to an era not long gone, when learning was a process of joy, wonder and a quiet excitement in little things.
Today, this relationship is based on considerations of time, money, space and availability. Intellectualizing art has replaced an innocent faith in it. In an increasingly competitive environment, it is now based on the capacity of the teacher to groom students into successful performers, on active interaction but not dependence, ideally long-term but terminable when required. What does the relationship mean in our times?
In this episode, Jayashree Aravind describes her learning with Veena maestro KS Narayanaswamy (1914-1999), who was known for his traditional and contained style of playing this instrument and other famed musicians like T Brinda, KV Narayanaswamy and Bombay Ramachandran. She brings forth memories of her discipleship speckled with joy, subtle humour, quiet satisfaction and even the occasional lark.
Over the last four decades, Jayashree’s career has seen her juggle multiple roles - as a performer in India and abroad, as head of the music wing at ISHA Samskriti and as curator at the National centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai. She has passed on the same musical principles to her students and they seem to have the same joyous, deep bond with her as she once had with her mentor. The legacy lives on…

Vidushi Jayashree Anand brought alive KSN mama's music tatva and vyaktitva. When I was carried away by SB mama and ES Veena vaadana grandeur, my guru and father introduced me to KSN Sir's sangitam. My lifelong rasikatva of his classicism beginning, Unending.

An unexpected, but a pleasant choice of Veena artist Jayashree Aravind by MOPA. As I listened to her younger days,I get to know so much about the past masters, a need to record them. She is very focused in her answers and many tiny stores interlaced (KSN train journey, etc).
;and lot you one gets to know about teaching methods…enjoyed listening to this interview

Musician's musical journey. Very interesting. Subtle narration with humour keeps the listener engaged throughout .The unique persanality of the Teacher is well brought out.
A full blown flower, silent, spreading its fragrance. It is for the seeking butterflies to extract the musical honey.
To him, the Juna Purana Samanvala is not a taker, but JPSW the artist, the giver. Hilarious, the Poorvikalyani lie detected on the spot, with a sugar quoted question, answer hidden.
To such a noble soul, Geetharthamu is a thoughtfully chosen swan song. On repeated listening one is dismayed about the meaning and bliss of Geetha and Sangeetha. Laymen cannot comprehend. But, then, when in the silent late hours the sound from the strings reaches Vara Thyagaraja Varadudu Sukhira, one experiences, yes this is it.

Totally delightful ! I could feel being present myself as each incident was being narrated. Great production as well. And lovely to hear of musicians who are instrumentalists as well. Very moved by everything she narrated!

Such an insightful and well-articulated narration by a worthy disciple of a worthy Guru ! In terms of poise, temperament, attitude and values Jayashree seems to have been so much in sync with her revered Guru whose exceptional musical virtuosity seems to have been better acknowledged and appreciated by his knowledgeable peers than the lay audience.Notwithstanding the much coveted and well-merited Sangeetha Kalanidhi title bestowed on him, late Vidwan KSN seems to have been stoically unperturbed that such recognition did not translate into mass popularity and the attendant opulence that comes with it, with a clear priority for teaching select disciples over stage performances.
Jayashree herself has dwelt commendably well on the efficacy and superiority of learning music in all its glory for its own sake rather than with a strait-jacketed concert agenda in mind.
She has also delineated well on her own musical journey.
It is only perplexing that one not just aesthetically gifted but also intellectually very vibrant as she irrefutably is, could have barely passed muster academically, despite the primacy and priority accorded to classical music. Her proclaimed plans to go in for a post-graduation then were perhaps another instance of 'not-so-harmful' guile akin to such occasional indulgences on the music front. 😅
    Stay blessed !
