Odes to a Temple is a docu-series that explores the rich heritage of India's deep South, a land of emerald rice fields and palm forests, dotted every few miles with magnificent temple towers. These temples, crafted by visionary rulers driven by faith, stand as some of the world's most remarkable stone treasures. Throughout history, revered seers and composers have dedicated songs and poems to the deities within, serving as a comprehensive encyclopedia of culture and spirituality. From ancient Saivite and Vaishnavite saints to the Carnatic Trinity of the 18th century, to modern-day composers, temple-inspired music remains central to Carnatic music.
Each episode takes you through a temple, with a selection of songs rendered by ace Carnatic vocalist Ramakrishnan Murthy within the temple premises. The narration traces a Carnatic trail through the temple and highlights the harmonious interlacing of temple iconography, history, literature and music.
We begin with the temples of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu and heartland of Carnatic music today. Episode 1 features Kapalishwara Temple, situated in Tirumayilai or Mylapore, in the heart of the city.

Wonderful. No words to describe. Sri.Ramakrishna Murthy and Ms.Saviths have given an outstanding presentation. Very informative and arresting our attention.
They must cover more temples.
God bless.
India needs more of such culturally and religiously centred productions. Presenting the temple and its background and tying it closely to the evolution of arts and compositions around the time is a very refreshing perspective to capture. Please keep more of this coming 🙏🏽 Kudos to the entire team, Ramakrishna's vocals are unparalleled in clarity and devotion!

The classicism and the essence of timelessness of RKM’s singing perfectly captured the temple and Mylapore’s culture pride and rich heritage.
The visuals and setting beautifully complemented the depth of the vocals, creating an immersive experience!

Thoroughly loved the curation! Please consider releasing the songs as individual musical pieces as well, as some of them seem to b rarely heard gems

Amazing.

Wonderful programme
Brilliant 👌👌👌
We welcome like this documents on other important temples.
Yes the original sanctum sanctoriun is only of சிங்கார வேலன், அம்மை அப்பன் joined their Son after Portuguese occupation of Myilai. Did St. Thomas or Doubting Thomas ever visited Madras , if not according to many scholars, who is in the crept ? Portuguese Sailor by name Tome?
Such a wonderful idea….
Very nice. Informative
Wondeful! I completely support you. Please bring on more
Very good information
A laudable effort !
A suggestion - The commentary is lost when the powerful voice of Sri. Ramakrushnan Murthy is running simultaneously in the background. Please avoid overlapping of the commentary and the singing , so that the interesting details are appreciated by all
True but the voice can be subtle I feel!!
🙏
Very blissful singing, narration and video about the rich temple. One suggestion if you could please do the narration before a song begins so that we can enjoy the rendition without interruption. Please post more such videos about other temples as well.
kapali😍😍😍😍
Pramadham
The kritis too could have been subtitled in italics considering they form the mainstay of this venture. Please do consider. Excellent effort. Keep it up. Best wishes!!!
22:09 ❤
Why not to visit kamakshi ambal temple in kanchipuram where shyama sastri , thyagaraja , dikshithar have contributed even oothukadu, chengalvaraya sastri have there part in it
Certainly we need better graphics for closer and more visible script.
Can’t we have Tamil narration? When you try to appeal to everybody in the South by speaking in English you lose the very essence of what makes temples and the culture worthwhile, the soul. What people from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra want from Karnatic music is soul not garden variety bbc copy and narration. You don’t do justice to the amazing singing of Ramakrishnan Murthy. Please get Madhusudhan Kalaiselvan to do the narration
thanks for the excellent presentation
