The Bloody Story of the Elder Wand (All Owners) - Harry Potter Explained

  • Hey everyone,
    Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, I’m going to be discussing one of the Deathly Hallows, in fact- I’m going to be discussing what is arguably the most important of the Hallows - at least in terms of the Harry Potter story. I am of course talking about the Elder Wand.
    The elder wand is undeniably the most powerful wand in the Harry Potter universe. It was the first Hallow created, made by Death himself, and no other wand is its equal. The Elder Wand is made of elder wood, and it’s core is the tail hair of a Thestral. It’s 15” long and has carvings down its length that resemble clusters of elderberries. With the elder wand, witches and wizards are able to effortlessly produce intensely powerful magic that others could only dream of. Possession of the wand also meant that you could produce magic which was not otherwise possible, including things like mending other wands- something that could not normally be achieved through magic.
    The elder wand, being one of the deathly hallows, is commonly associated with the tale of three brothers- Antioch, Cadmus and Ignotus.
    “The eldest brother, a combative man, asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. Death granted his wish by fashioning the Elder Wand from a branch of a nearby elder tree standing on the banks of the river. The second brother, an arrogant man, chose to further humiliate death, and asked for the power to recall the deceased from the grave. Death granted his wish by crafting the Resurrection Stone from a stone picked from the riverbank. The third and youngest brother, who was the most humble and wise, did not trust Death and asked for something to enable him to go forth without Death being able to follow. A reluctant Death, most unwillingly, handed over a part his own Invisibility cloak. The three brothers took their prizes and soon went on their separate ways.”
    And that was how the Deathly Hallows were born- however, this was not the last time that death and the three brothers would meet. Each brother, under their own unique circumstances, ended up losing their life and met death once more.
    So, Antioch was the first owner- but one thing that I thought was worth mentioning is that Albus Dumbledore never believed that the wand was actually made by Death. Dumbledore always assumed that the wand was in fact created by the eldest of the Peverell brothers, Antioch himself. However, regardless of who created the fabled wand - the fact remains- Antioch was killed and the wand no longer belonged to him. So, where did the wand go next?
    According to Xenophilius Lovegood- "The bloody trail of the Elder Wand is splattered across the pages of Wizarding history."
    After Antioch died- the wand was passed around from wizard to wizard-usually by violent means- which led to the wand acquiring a few different names “the deathstick” and “the wand of destiny”- an omen of death that alludes to the ‘bloody trail’ mentioned by Lovegood.

    Grindelwald lost possession and true mastery of the Elder Wand when Newt disarmed him in the fight at the station in New York in FB1 (1926). That made Newt the wand's true master. Tina summoned the wand to herself before it hit the platform, but didn't disarm anyone in the process - it had already left Grindelwald's hand - so she didn't become true master. Grindelwald regained possession of the Elder Wand when he escaped from MACUSA's captivity, but he is no longer it's true master. Kama used Expeliarmus to disarm Newt in the sewers in Paris in FB2 (1927). So as of the end of FB2, Kama is the Elder Wand's current true master.

      Exactly.
      I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing it.
      The Elder Wand changes allegiance each time its current master is overpowered beyond resistance, indipendently from the means. And this happened in both the instances you've perfectly mentioned.
      I'd also stress 2 aspects. The first is that there seems to be a pattern with a Fantastic Beast "distracting" the audience from the ongoing change in allegiance of the Elder Wand. The second is the fact that these changes in allegiance (and I wouldn't be surprised if we'll see other ones in the next movies) may elegantly resolve the mystery about Dumbledore winning the Elder Wand's allegiance from Grindelwald. Because it means that Dumbledore may gain the allegiance INDIRECTLY from Grindelwald. Basically, if Dumbledore overpowers Kama (or a wizard/witch who overpowered Kama), he can become the master of the Elder Wand BEFORE gaining the mere physical possesion of the Wand. And this last change of allegiance may happen even at the last minute of the final 1945 duel.

      One thing that always trips me up is how Grindelwald had the wand answering to him to begin with. It seems like every other instance of the wand changing Allegiance it was due to either being bested in a duel, being murdered or being bested in some way.
      How it is always stated that Grindelwald simply stole the wand. Did he murder its previous owner? If simple theft was enough then Voldemort would have had the wand's Allegiance but that isn't how it works so why did Grindelwald have the wand answering to him to begin with?

    • @stuartmcnaughton1495

      @@XodiaqKey Simple theft is enough, but only if you steal a wand (it can be any wand if the true master is using it) from the Elder Wand's true master. Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand from Gregorovitch, who was it's true master at the time. Voldemort stole the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's tomb, but Dumbledore had not been it's true master at the end. True mastery had already passed to Draco Malfoy when he disarmed Dumbledore on top of the tower, and then to Harry when he stole Draco's wand.

    I find the wands to witches/wizards in Harry Potter to be strongly parallel to the lightsabers in Star Wars. In HP, the wand with a particular core chooses the wizard. In SW, the kyber crystal that powers a lightsaber chooses the Jedi. Both can be seen as general weapons for their respective individual, but it becomes the true and full extension of the one it's destined for.
    And then the Elder Wand - the most powerful wand. Changes owners through disarm (or killing, depending on the situation). Very similar to the Darksaber.

    As much as I like the idea of the wands power breaking, I'd just like to point out that in order for Harry to achieve this he'd effectively have to make sure he was never disarmed EVER for the rest of his life or the wands allegiance would change. The only way to counteract that would be to disarm or kill the person who disarmed him before they were disarmed or killed by someone else. Pretty difficult task considering he chose to become an auror. In this sense, I did sort've prefer the movie ending where he snaps the wand in half as that way the wands power is truly broken. My only issue is that they never showed him repairing the holly wand

    • @CristiNeagu
      @CristiNeagu Před rokem +4

      Yes, but just like Malfoy, the new owner wouldn't know the significance of disarming Harry. He wouldn't know he's the new master of the wand, nor would he know where to look for it. Whoever defeated him would have even less of an inkling. At some point, either the current owner would die undefeated, breaking the power, or whoever finds the wand would have no way of knowing who it belongs to currently.
      The biggest problem with this is that there is no indication the power would break. Maybe once the wand no longer has a master, it would accept anyone that came across it.

  • @Hiten19
    @Hiten19 Před 2 lety +18

    Here’s a crazy theory. The elder wand is a naturally powerful wand, yes. It is truly at its peak power when used by its true owner. A wand that can not be beaten. But what if the true owner is and ALWAYS ever was the first Peveral brother? The wand was technically never “won” from him. It was stolen. And not stolen from an owner while in conflict like harry and draco, stolen unawares from a dead owner. So the ownership died with the first owner, but the legend lived on with the subsequent possessors.

      I’ve been pondering this as well. For a wand that “must will duels for its owner,” it kinda sucks at winning duels 😂 if we assume that Grindlewald was the true master of the Elder Wand, how is it possible that he loses to Dumbledore? Likewise with the other previous owners who were ‘beaten’ in duels. I believe this is because ultimately, the Elder Wand was crafted by Death himself, with the intent of it killing the 1st brother (indirectly). So Death always intended for the wand to be unreliable and cause destruction. Because then Death could reap more souls from the wizards who were killing each other in order to attain the Elder Wand

Atleast that seems logical to me.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety

      I'll explain it to my understanding. Remember the story of the Hallows are more hyperbolic than realism. The creation of the Hallows are said to come from Death but some argue( like Dumbledore) the Hallows were actaully created by the brothers themselves. People said death created it as a means to spread the danger of each Hallow and what impact it had on each brother because all 3 died but the last brother died peacefully while the other 2 died out of misery and murder. To explain how the wand got back into circulation, the story was told that death came in a form of the wizard while in reality the wizard saw how powerful the wand was killing the brother and taking the wand( death wasn't really the wizard, but the wizard had the intention to kill the brother thats why death was used). The second brother died by committing( death wasn't present but because he killed himself death is involved in suicide.) The reason why death greeted the last brother peacefully as an old friend is because he died of old age( people that reach at great age are more frequent to accept death as they have lived their life good and so death visits them peacefully). The Wand came back in circulation because the first brother was killed and each wizard after that believe death was the way to achieve the wand, killing the owner of the wand will allow the all to switch. It was only until Grindelwald figured out that the alliance switches upon disarming the owner and it is not necessary to kill them.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety

      Yes it did. Grindelwald knew disarming was only needed to gain ownership of the wand and he tracked it to Gregorovitch. When he got there he stunned him with stupify and disarmed him gaining ownership of the Elder wand. The wand will always work for the new owner as he defeats the previous owner and the wand will go the wizard who defeated him. Killing or disarming is a sign of defeat cause the owner of Elder wand did give his best before he loses or dies. Much like Grindelwald how he lost against Dumbledore cause Dumbledore best him. Its a complicated wand but very sensitive of what the user wants.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety +1

      Grindelwald knew disarming the person the alliances switches and therefore tracked it to Gregorovitch. It is explained that Grindelwald stunned him and stole the wand but if you go in deeper in thought, the spell Grindelwald used to stun him must of been stupify and then Grindelwald disarmed him to steal wand. Thats how Grindelwald became the master of the wand. There are generally 4 ways to achieve mastery over the Elder Wand.
      1.) By killing its owner, the alliance switches to the new wizard who becomes the master.
      2.) Disarming the owner( without killing him/her) the alliance switches to the wizard that becomes the new owner.
      3.) By mere force( such as Harry took Draco wand from him even though it was only an ordinary wand) the alliance still switches. Taking another wand by using mere force causes alliance to switch.
      4.) Disarming, killing or mere force the wizard that uses another wand. If the owner of the Elder Wand uses another wand on him and he gets disarmed, killed or his wand taken from him by another wizard the alliance switches which causes the wizard to be the new owner.
      The reason for this is that the Elder Wand is unique wand that senses its owner way of things and thoughts. The wand doesnt need to be on the owner to switch alliance because it senses loyalty and presence. Therefore not knowing how to use it properly can be a big problem.

      Thestral Tail Hair makes for wands of the least amount of loyalty and this is enhanced by pairing it with elder wood.
      Quote from the wiki:
      "They contain powerful magic, but scorn to remain with any owner who is not the superior of his or her company; it takes a remarkable wizard to keep an elder wand for any length of time."
      The most powerful combination, but also the most disloyal. To tame Elder wood, pair it with unicorn tail hair, and to tame Thestral Tail hair, encase in Ash wood.

    theory/question:
    Did Voldemort became the owner of the elder wand when he “killed” Harry in the woods
    (I know he technically didn’t kill but still kinda beat him).
    In the final battle after Harry disarmed Voldemort he of course became its owner again, but I think it’s kinda interesting that Voldemort could have had the full power and possession in the final fight.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety +2

      No Harry remained the owner the whole time. The Elder Wand is a special wand that senses loyalty and its owner thoughts. When Harry disarmed Draco( even though Draco had his own wand) the alliance still switched because the Elder Wand senses the owner presence. In the forest when Voldemort used the death spell on Harry he closed his eyes when that happen which caused the wand to do what Harry asked and therefore Harry allowed the wand to attack him on that moment. In the last fight when Voldemort tried to do it again on Harry the spell backfired killing him because Harry thoughts wasn't to be defeated and the Elder Wand doesnt kill its owner( only on request like the forest scene). The wand is very unique and therefore can do alot more than ordinary wand.

    I think a really cool idea that should've been used for *_Deathly Hallows: Part 2_* as a proper sendoff for the Elder Wand was Harry using it to rebuild Hogwarts after the battle was over as a nod to when Dumbledore used it to repair the apartment Horace Slughorn was staying for a little while (as said by someone in the comments on a different video), then used it to repair his own wand (which was actually done in the book), and finally, to put an end to the reign of terror any future power-hungry wizards/witches would possibly bring onto the Wizarding World using it, snap it in half (which was what was seen in the movie).

    The wand belong to Dumbledore right? Dumbledore, loses possession of the Elder Wand after being successfully struck by Draco’s disarming spell. And the wand ownership belong to Draco.
    Harry Potter becomes Elder Wand owners after physically overpowering Malfoy at the Malfoy Manor. According the story, This is what made Voldermort never truly own the wand, even by killing Snape, who he think was the true owner because Snape killed Dumbledore.
    Now my confussion start here.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety

      I'll explain it in a way that makes sense. Gregorovitch himself studied wanda and I believe he figured out that disarming the Elder Wand owner the alliance switches. Now Grindelwald was pretty smart and figured this himself out and it was confirmed. So Grindelwald tracked the wand to Gregorovitch and cast stupify on him stunning him and then he disarmed him. One must also take in account you can also take the wand from another by mere force such as Harry did with Draco( even though Draco had another wand. The Elder Wand still switches alliance cause it senses his owner presence and emotions.) So thats how Grindelwald got ownership of the wand but some say Grindelwald lost it at the end of the first Fantastic beasts movie but I am not sure its true cause if he did, then he must of known the wand wasn't his. The owner of the Elder Wand will know if it is his wand or not( much like Voldemort) the Elder Wand will not cast powerful spells or do any complex magic if the caster isn't the owner of the wand. Voldemort knew that cause he forced the wand with his power to destroy the protego shield protecting Hogwarts and it resulted in the wand cracking at the side.

      @@w.c2255 I see your point, but in this case it seems to me that wands’ loyalty is quite frail and easily changable. So you go and buy your first wand which chose you and they place emphasis on this, but they forget to tell you that hmm if you are disarmed you are no longer the owner, sorry :D. And what about simple duels where you disarm your enemy, your wands switch owners all the time bouncing to one another? You could say that in a simple disarming you dont want to become the owner of the opponent’s wand, but neither did Malfoy want to become the owner of the elder wand, but he did. So I think this wand loyalty thing is quite floppy and not really reasoned, might be a plothole too...

      @@richardolr1770 Like Olivander explained to Harry, some wands to change alliance after its owner is defeated but the Elder Wand is a very special wand. I argue too that how it changed alliance after Draco disarming doesn't make sense but the wand can doesn't need to be on the wizard to be disarmed as it senses alliance and loyalty. Like you said it is floppy and I agree but Grindelwald figured out that wand merely works only on disarming and killing is unnecessary thats why he stupified Gregorovitch and disarmed him for the wand. The wand I believe have cheated so many people but in reality if Grindelwald wasn't the owner of the wand he would of known. The wand resists if it isn't yours and it will refuse to cast any complex or difficult spell as it shows you that it only serves it master. Normal wands choose the better wizard after disarming the owner while the Elder Wand does work the same but it also is more complex and does what the owner says for instance killing the owner with the Elder Wand will result in the wand killing the caster, while a normal wand taken from the owner( without disarming)by the caster the caster can kill the owner successful. Its a very difficult process to understand but the Elder Wand is a complex wand and I can see why it is so much desired and dangerous at the same time. It betrays and saves you in occasions.

    I don't believe Harry's theory that disarming changes ownership of the wand and that is why he received ownership from Malfoy. The Elder Wand wasn't even present when Harry disarmed Malfoy.
    It makes more sense that Malfoy never owned the wand and that Snape was legitimately the owner as Voldemort had assumed. However Voldemort didn't kill Snape (Nagini did) and Harry claimed credit for Snape's death by being the Wizard closet to him at his final moment.

    • @w.c2255
      @w.c2255 Před 3 lety

      Actaully the disarming theory is proved true cause Grindelwald was the first person to figure it out( Gregorovitch isn't revealed how he got the wand). Killing isn't necessary and disarming is the only thing needed. Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald and gain ownership of the wand by mere disarming and defeating him. I understand your point of Harry but the wand did belong to him and I'll tell you why. Remember the Elder Wand doesnt need to be on the person to lose ownership of it. Draco used his own wand but when Harry took his wand by mere force Draco was defeated and lost his normal wand causing the Elder Wand to sense that Draco lost and was defeated feeling Harry is its new master. Voldemort struggled with the wand and he tried to cast power spells( spells his normal wand would of cast) but the Elder wand resisted. Therefore Voldemort forced the Elder Wand by using his own power to cast a powerful spell to destroy the protego charm around Hogwarts which resulted in the wand to crack at the side. Voldemort knew the wand wasn't his and merely believed according to the legend killing the previous owner you gain ownership and thought Snape was the new owner.
      Also when Voldemort cast the cruciates spell on Harry to confirm he is dead( after he cast Death Spell on him cause Harry allowed him) the spell didn't harm Harry cause the wand belonged to him and Harry knew that. That is why Harry allowed the wand to kill him cause he ordered it so. In the last fight Voldemort tried to kill him with the same spell but against Harry motives and orders which resulted in the Elder Wand killing Voldemort cause the Elder Wand doesnt kill its owner. The Elder Wand is a sensitive wand that responds on emotions and thoughts and gives you great power but it can also betray you and let you down as history proved it. The Elder Wand is a very special wand that can do more than an ordinary wand

    I think none of them were the true owners of the elder wand the first brother was killed in his sleep not defeated in a duel so the wand never lost ownership and will forever belong to the first brother

    I honestly suspect that avada kedavra came with elder wand and it's a spell made by death itself. It's not confirmed yet, but apparently your magic skills must be above avarage to cast the killing curse, so probably not everyone will ever cast it in their lives

    Death got mad because they used magic to waltz over The Strid. That's my head canon.
