- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Grand Funk Railroad. Grand Funk formed in Flint, Michigan in 1969 and became very popular/influential in the early/mid-1970s with their own brand of heavy blues-rock riffing and twisted-triad progressions from classic rock guitar legend Mark Farner - who played with the group until the late 1990s. The guitar position has been filled by Bruce Kulick (of KISS fame) for over twenty years and Grand Funk remains active to this day.
This lesson features an assortment of interesting chord-based and rhythm guitar ideas pulled from four classic Grand Funk albums, and include lesser-known/fan favorites such as ''Hooray,' 'Save The Land,' 'Hooked On Love,' 'Sin's A Good Man's Brother,' 'Paranoid,' and 'Aimless Lady' - to name a few. Mark is a master at blending regular chords with twisted triads in his music, as this lesson explores and demonstrates throughout.
Needless to say, if you're a Grand Funk fan, a fan of classic rock guitar, or a player searching for some new chord-based and rhythm guitar ideas to explore - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU! - Hudba
Mark is a brilliant songwriter and singer. A very special person
I start guitar with those songs, in 1970 , great video.
Mark Farner is criminally underrated. Those albums in the 70's we're awesome. Great lesson Dave!! Keep up the great work 🎸🤘
To many don’t just put on an album and from start to finish anymore. Good point.
One of my favorite bands. When I was a kid in the early 1970s I wore out three copies of the “on time” album.
I wore out the Live Album...
I wore out and still wearing out that classic Grand Funk Railroad album that came to be known as the Red Album. To me, that was the album Grand Funk Railroad was destined to make, and the definitive Grand Funk Railroad album. All the other early Grand Funk Railroad albums through the 'Survival' album are AWESOME, too.
Very enjoyable video - not too many have gone in depth on Mark Farner's playing.
Keep that 70ish-ness coming, David!!!! What a great decade for guitar! Thanks!!!!
Great lesson. Not many understand the influence Grand Funk Railroad had. And still has. Thanks for the insightful lesson.
I can remember jammin to Heartbreaker… and Mean Mistreater …. Great stuff to grow up on..
Thanks man..!
Intro tune sounds like Only Women Bleed by Alice Cooper. Great lesson; GF are legends! Thank you
GFR has always been on of my favorite bands. Aimless Lady is killer, and Mean Mistreater is a blues masterpiece! Love that you covered them and recognize their contribution to Rock!
If you want to hear Grand Funk’s heavier stuff listen to their first live album. Studio versions of their music doesn’t do them justice. Best live band I’ve ever seen! By far.
Awesome David! Grand Funk Live 1970 changed everything for me! Raw Guitar Power! Great Lesson!
Thanks Dave for this great lesson. I saw Grand Funk Railroad live in the 70th in Berlin. They were at this time a very well known supergroup and for me unforgettable, Footstompin‘ Music and Inside Looking Out, still some of my favorite titles. 😊😊😊
did humble pie open?
@@craigrheberling Yes, and Steve Marriott sang: „I don’t need no doctor“
On Time ,.the red album, closer to home and e Pluribus funk were all amazing albums ... Don , mel and mark are top notch, Mel is criminally underrated as a bass player
Also their Live-1970 is killing, I still have the vynil
Their album Closer to Home is where it started for me. And still my favorite GFR album.
This is going back a ways I had a 8 track in my bedroom it was a loop. the first three albums played nonstop.Brings back a lot of memories
Could listen to that sound all day!...Thanks David
Great video !! I was wondering when you were gonna get to Grand Funk !! Glad you made it !! Thank you !!
My very first concert at 17 was seeing GFR at Shea Stadium with Humble Pie with Marriot and Frampton.
That was the show where the whole stadium was shaking. Must've been wild
Man, I wore out side 2 of the red album in my teen years; winter&my soul, paranoid & inside looking out! What music! Now I'm trying to play them. Thanks for the memories & tips! Good job passing music on to those who may not know the greatness of Grand Funk Railroad! I really liked the album Survival too!
I liked how grand funk continually progressed till the end.
Are You Ready, Footstompin' Music.
They created so many cool tunes with tremendous gruvez.
Cool stuff as usual David, thanks. I forgot some of the lesser known stuff, some I didn't even know.
Great stuff Dave. Grand Funk friggin rocks!
I had a hunch which song would be featured before opening the video. Love the intro of Sin is a Good Man’s Brother and love the videos 👍👍👍
Monster Magnet did a great job covering sins a good man's brother on the spine of god album
Saw GFR on Kirshner's Rock Concert, bought E Pluribus Funk right after that. What an album! Then bought Phoenix, American Band, all of them, as they were all released.
Singing, playing guitar or Hammond, Farner always had rock and roll soul. Tremendous vocalist, one of the all time best.
Your right David Save the land is cool riffage 👍
This is not the grand funk music I have listened to but thank you for the introduction. Love the riffs you were playing.
Keep up the great videos. Awesome content.
Their older albums are much heavier than the more well-known tunes
awesome video! Mark and GFR have some of the most important and influential music for me, I play some of these songs myself and was aways in awe of the way he twists the chords like this. I love it! =)
Great Lesson Video Dave Of One My Favorite Bands Of All Time! I Never Sat Down With My Guitar And Tried To Learn All These Great Songs! Thank You! Time To Hit The Woodshed!!!!
Made me research their stuff and plug my LP into my Marshall at 10pm...wife just loved it!😬
That acoustic progression reminds me of Alice Cooper's Only Women Bleed.😎🤘🎸
Yep, started singing there.
Wonder whose was first. Have to research that.
@@jfo3000 Sins a good man's brother from Closer to Home album released June 1970. Only women bleed from Welcome to my nightmare 1975.
Love me some GFR. They are staples in my music rotation. I like all the eras they had even the Good Singin' Good Playin' breakup album. It's too bad Mark and the other guys can't settle their differences.
“Sin’s a good man’s brother” also wasn’t the first song I heard by Grand Funk, but it was the first song that I heard by them that really hit me. Such a cool and tense intro leading into that sick hard heavy fuzzed out riff and then those intense, full efforted shrieking vocals. There just isn’t enough love here in the UK for this period of 70’s wild chunky bluesy rock like Grand Funk, Mountain, Humble Pie, Blue Öyster Cult, or even early Aerosmith. Brilliant lesson as always dude, keep on riffing!
Good job sir. Grand Funk probably the most underrated band of all time. They were the Donald Trump's of their time. The majority of the people loved them and the majority of the Rock and Roll press couldn't stand them. They out did and have outlasted all of the great bands of their time. And they owe it all to the man, MARK FARNER!!! Was and still is everything that was GRAND FUNK RAILROAD.
Saw GFR in Louisville Ky winter 1972 . They had a keyboard player then , all sounded great . REO opened promoting the golden country album . Mark Farner was demoted as Gary Dean Richrath took his spot as my new guitar hero .
A Great Night !
Both bands were tight n polished .
Great ear my friend! I discovered Grand funk in 1971, got a guitar, went about trying to figure out what he was doing ever since. Thanks for the insight into his chord voicings etc, he's definitely got a unique approach. Also love all those huge power chords that sound like a bomb going off. Also has the best right hand of all time. Thanks for the post. Gonna lock my self in the jamb room for a week.
Sins a good man’s brother is sooooo good!! Marcus k does a good job of it. Thanks for this. Sooo awesome. New subscriber.
I saw GFR in Nashville in August 1969 right after their real debut at the Atlanta Pop Festival. I had never seen any band like them nor a front man that commanded the stage like Mark Farner. And they were incredibly LOUD. Still my favorite band of all time. Mark was on That Metal Show, I think as a last minute fill-in and you could tell that the only stuff Eddie Trunk was familiar with was their later more poppy stuff like American Band, Locomotion, Bad Time, etc. Their early stuff, 1969-1971 was HEAVY, especially for a 3-piece band. They actually outsold Led Zeppelin during that time and sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles.
If you want to hear them at their best, check out their first Live album: czcams.com/video/QzvErw_8tTk/video.html
Completely agree. They are one of the greatest bans ever
I was there mind was blown away, don't remember some things lol
1st 3 albums
@DavidS19551 I'd say the first 5 albums plus Grand Funk Live
Thank you Dave. I have always wanted how tô play Save de Land and Hooked on love, nobody did before. You show diferent songs and this is awesome. I am waiting for Chapter 2 of Grand Funk, so many great songs. Please, People lets stop the war, The End, Greed of Man, Good Times, No lies, Ain't got Nobody, Stop looking back and much more. Thank you so much.
Dude is that a 13th Floor Elevators t-shirt OMG. Great lesson btw, jammed along!
One of the most underated bands, love their music, was my time in the 70th ❤
The chord plays are definitely my favorites. I get the most out of these as it gives me ideas to change up and build sections in songs. Right on man. Right on. 🎸
My Favorite Late Night Lesson so far Dave. Hope you follow it up with part II.
Are you Ready, Time Machine, High on a Horse, The Railroad, Into the Sun, Winter and my Soul, and Sin's a good man's brother would be some potential covers...
You hit the nail right on the head. GFR is just one of those bands, like Rush, where you have to actually listen to their ALBUMS to get what they're really all about and understand their greatness. The handful of hits on the radio don't do them justice. There's a reason why their albums sold better than their singles---they are, first and foremost, an ALBUM oriented band!
Plus that drummer was fantastic as well
Too bad he turned out to be such a asshole.
Homer Simpson described him as "competent" lol
Love the G Funk!!! Marks a natural Born lead man!!
Thanks Dave ... love GFR
Mark was one of the best...this is bringing back memories
Your lessons rock ❤
Great lesson!!Mark Farner!!
In 2009 mark farner was a judge in the battle of bands we were in and thank you also won in traverse city mi great job
Brilliant. I spent hours in my youth some time ago now!, learning these songs for our school band.
Hell yeah ! Thanks Dave.
loving that acoustic guitar
They have so many cool tunes their deep cuts, Winter & my Soul, Mr Limo Driver, In Need, are very tricky to play! Correctly.
Love Mark ! Got to know him in the 80's .Super nice man. He was my hero as a young guitarist and power vocalist. Sin's a good man's Brother. Loved when they blew Zeppelin off the stage. A classic story. Mark's Eastwood Messenger is still with him. I saw them a week before they did the sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. Check out his song Paranoid
Paranoid is definitely a killer track
"and then ya kick on a bunch of fuzz..." Bah hahahaha. Really incredible edu stuff too! The acoustic groove could also be "Only Women Bleed" Alice Cooper perhaps?
Great video, Mark was the most under-rated I think he was one of the best. I remember just smoking the devil weed and had a black light with posters on my wall. Those were the days of peace @!
The ENTIRE Red Album ROCKS!!!!!!
And thank you that was great my favorite links (farner) and you kick ass..please more if you have the time!!!
geez I remember GFR - first concert I saw in middle school when American Band came out.
Great stuff ! Thanks Man!!!
Started out with one of my favorites. Sins a Good Mans Brother.
Awesome !!
Dave.....You might need to revisit "Save The Land" on its own....This one always escaped me on what Mark Farner was doing, chord wise but it would be great for a more in depth look at it....Thanks in advance
Great work, miss it!
Out on the road for forty days classic
GFR is one of the greatest band. Until 1975 they were my favorites. For me they were better than LZ, DP, BS and others (the Beatles and the Stones are out of classifications ). LZ became my favorite in 1975 after their PG and until now. Still love GFR
First!! Love your vids!
Earl Slick 70's album and 80's albums lesson and Chris Spedding Lesson, both have been in a lot of sessions albums like SHARKS 70's album and Chris spedding first album 1975 was produced by Mickie Most. Al Estrada Riffage solo album lesson, Sam Boller tapping licks shred licks, Vinnie Vincent arpeggios and shredding licks his VHS lesson video to make a lesson on.
what a cool guitar.
One of the best. Until the latter year..Loneliness!! Schacer greatest bass player
Thanks for the deeper dive into Grand Funk! Would you consider an episode about Randy Bachman?
I don't know how Sin's A Good Man's Brother was recorded but when Mark Farner plays the intro during live shows he is playing at the octave (12th). I think he also is playing all the open strings except the notes played around the E chord @ the octave. You can see this on some CZcams video's.
Hooray is a Bonus Track and was not released as part of the original vinyl lp.
Disclaimer: I'm commenting only because you asked. I'm really glad that you made this video. I'm a huge student of Farner. he was my biggest guitar influence when I started playing guitar in the 70's. I also like your intentions but there were a few mistakes.
Sin's a good man's brother: The intro is played up by the 12th fret (the alternative way you showed) (Although your way does sound good.) The power chords for the verses are played E5 over B and D5 over A. You slide down from the E5. He never plays an open E chord for the verses.
Save the Land ; Really good.
Hooked on Love: Perfect except for the end of the riff. You play D D D D D# E. It should be D D D D D# E.
Paranoid: This is the only one that is way off. After the opening chords, Instead of playing single notes, they should be power chords. E5- Eb5, G5-Gb5 etc.
Aimless Lady: Your chords are "right" but they should be played down at the first frets off of an E minor. The "walk up" A-B-D doesn't happen at all.
Hooray: Perfect and cool that you covered a very obscure GFR song.
great vid..thanks gfr great band
Is that a 13th Floor Elevators shirt that you have on?
GrandFunk Foreever!!!!!
The same way you broke it down is exactly how i got into GFR you gotta just dive in it
Find some MC5 too. Stooges if you can.
Just saw a YT video where Mark played the intro to Sin's at the 12th fret.
I think Clutch stole some of that first riff on big news
Opening chord changes sounded close to "Only Woman Bleed"
When you get so board and have nothing to work on. Please look at RAMJAM. There greatest hits rocks.
hope you do a Lennon/McCartney/Harrison video!
In a video, Mark Farner begin to play the intro in 12 fret, not this way of playing, but it's close in sound. IMHO 🎸
They dropped the Railroad appendage after the Terry Knight lawsuits in 1972, which left them nothing but the band name. Knight got all the money and publishing. They also added Craig Frost on keyboards at that time.
Do Mahavishnu 20\8 "Meeting of the Spirts" & "Birds of Fire" in 6 rifs - yeah?
Hi! I Just watched your video for early Grand Funk Lessons & subscribed. One of my favorite songs on E Pluribus Funk is Upsetter. I'm probably what I'd consider mid-intermidiate skill on guitar. I've just never been able to figure out the intro for Upsetter & haven't seen any Lessons for it. Any chance you could show that one?
Great video again dave.
What's you thoughts on Lindsey Buckingham?
Anyone remember T.N.U.C. on the live album? “…I work all day makin’ up nickel bags” always made me laugh. Notice what the title spelled backwards is.
That lyric is from Inside Looking Out.
🤙🏼
13:23 War Pigs intro slide up voicing.
Aren't the pull offs at the beginning of Paranoid you're doing a wah?
The acoustic was using inversions , right?
What guitar you play
You can shave and no glasses and start your own Grand Funk tribute band!
The chords are correct perfect but you are missing the grace notes played with the pinky finger...it is NOT just a strum you must mix the strum with the grace notes...listen again!
