    Summary:
On this date, Bill Graham assembled a stellar roster of bands to participate in the filming of a television special called Welcome To The Fillmore East for broadcast on educational channels. Short sets were filmed by the Byrds, the Elvin Bishop Group, Sha-Na-Na, Van Morrison, and the Allman Brothers Band, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of Bill Graham and the Fillmore East staff at work.
The Allman Brothers performance is nothing short of spectacular and features the original lineup that included Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Recorded six months prior to the legendary Live At Fillmore East double album set, this performance captures the Allman Brothers when they were a relatively new band, full of youthful passion and performing what would become classic original material when it was fresh and new.
Following Bill Graham's introduction, they kick things off with a tight performance of "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," which features the band's friend, Tom Doucette, blowing harp over the group's trademark sound. Gregg's vocal is barely audible, but it's obvious the group is full of fire. "Dreams," which follows, slows things down a bit and the group establishes a relaxed groove that showcases their trademark sound, blending elements that would eventually come to define "Southern Rock."
They hit their stride on the next number, Dickey Betts' "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." Here, the dual guitar attack of Allman and Betts is astounding. The two guitarists intertwine and synchronize in a manner nothing short of telepathic, creating a melting pot seasoned with elements of jazz, rock, country, and blues into a style utterly their own. The set ends with a ferocious take of "Whipping Post" that features outstanding melodic bass playing from Berry Oakley, with both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts soaring over the propulsive rhythm section. Shorter than the expansive versions that would develop in coming months, this is all the more fascinating for it, as they compress an incredible amount of energy into the time allotted.
Time constrictions and vocal microphone malfunctions aside, this is still a fascinating performance. This original lineup of the band was certainly one of the most innovative and captivating bands to ever play the Fillmore.

Oh, they missed a lot of notes -- not like I blame them. But when you listen to the complete Fillmore recordings, it's obvious why the versions for the original LP were chosen. For some reason there's a good handful of times Dickey Betts loses the downbeat in his solos. On an outtake of Hot 'Lanta, for instance, he somehow winds up a half-measure ahead of the rest of the band, and it really fucks everyone up.

I suspect I'm not alone when I find myself as emotionally gripped by the passion of Dickey Betts guitar work as I am by Duane Allman in this awesome early performance. They were the perfect foil for each others approach , contrasting and distinct in their tone and feel but capable of playing as though of one mind, lost in the melodic but, found in the harmonic, a band in sync but sympathetic to living in the moment.
Their music is so compelling, it's complex but accessible, uncompromising but never elitist, an antidote to all that's bland and formuleric in modern music.
The Allman Brothers band are inclusive, nurturing the talents of guitarists like Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, and very much a musical family who while carrying the torch within the band have broken new ground in various bands and musical collaborations taking their music to new places and new heights of virtuosity and in the process Inspire a new generation of musicians.

Duane's incredible gift for finding his place for the pitch he wanted no matter where on the neck he began a slide from was always uncanny. This video captures much of that magic. Quick stops, down, up vibrato, pitch and timing perfect dives - amazing stuff. Derek Trucks is the closest I've heard since, but Duane always sounded so spontaneous that you felt in in your spine.

Spontaneous is a fantastic way of describing his playing. It almost feels like a tightrope act all the way through one of his blistering slide solos in a way. In my opinion, Derek has truly taken Duane's ideas and approach to slide playing and taken them to an even higher level. Duane was playing it unlike anyone else back in his day, and Derek is now doing the same with this generation of music. Both are fantastic for numerous reasons.

So awesome! Brings tears to my eyes. Was a kid in east village at the time of this show. Missed these Filmore shows but was fortunate to see this Allman Bros. Band in Central Park and tru to what all say who have ever seen this band, it was one of the GREATEST live performances I have EVER witnessed! Incredible! Love Brother Duane, Greg, Dickie, Berry, Butch and J Johnny!

I love this band. Wish Duane's career wasn't so short. Very sad. Legends never die though!

I so much wanted to go to this concert but my mom would have none of it. She's like "Jesus you won't even be 2yrs old until December", you are not going to some rock concert. "And especially not some long hair southern hippy boy rock concert".I haven't spoken to her since.

Duane and Dickey were a perfect guitar duo. They still are and always will be thanks to videos like this and all the music they recorded and played together. 🎸

Wow.. Duane was kickin' it. It was awesome to "see" this show which I've heard countless times, as a teenager growing up in a place where you'd be likely to actually walk into your favorite bar and see Dicky or Gregg or Butch.

+Pati Beardsley Where was that? Macon ? Atlanta? Just wondering, not trying to put you on the spot, I only ask because I live in Daytona and saw Duane & Greg in places here before they moved to Georgia. By Butch I think you are talking of the trucks family? I envy you.

After I moved to Tennessee I found out they went to either Jr. high or high school or both right up the road and they used to practice in a garage about 5 miles away from where I lived. WOW. Well as smooth as their sound became through time, I can guarantee it wasn't wasted time. And to know that 49 1/2 years later I can watch them play Fillmore East Live and sit on the front row because of the internet blows me away! Thanks Guys, forever.

Awesome stuff! I was lucky enough to catch the original ABB many times in NOLA at The Warehouse, Tulane, the Fly at Audubon Park, etc ... and later at City Park, and a road trip to Watkins Glen ... still get goosebumps thinking about those Warehouse shows on NYE ... RIP Duane, Berry and Butch

many of the concerts in the late 60's and early 70's got filmed as cheaply as possible. This is good quality by 48 year old standards and the audio is great. I love it.

The great Duane left us way too soon. Imagine what they could have achieved in the 1970's if he had lived.

True, however following the death of Duane Allman the bands next two records went to No. 7 and No. 1. They carried on. Duane Allman is the greatest musician in history. That said, had he lived would the Allan Brothers conquered the world? Can't say.
