- Grateful Dead Live at Fillmore East on February 11, 1970.
The Grateful Dead with Duane & Gregg Allman!
From "Searching for the Sound" by Phil Lesh:
Jerry says to Phil of the ABB on their way to this show: "make sure you check these guys out... they're kinda like us... They jam hard"
Phil was startled when he heard Duane's slide during Dark Star... Jerry hadn't told him anyone would sit in.
Gregg "slides onto the organ bench" during Spanish Jam.
"Peter Green from the Mac plugs in just as I'm pulling the music into the dominant minor ... he and Duane seem more comfortable in this space."
After the show, "I walk outside -- it's daylight, and snow is falling gently on the streets of New York... I grab Bob and Jerry in a group embrace: This is what it's all about." - Hudba
This Dead/ABB show (search by date) is available to stream on the Internet Archive. Several recordings will show up... search the info in each one. Most will say "there are gaps or missing segments during Dark Star/Spanish Jam and Lovelight. This recording will say they are complete, patched from two different sources.
There is software you can download to record streaming music on your computer to capture it.
And there are hundreds and hundreds of other great shows!
I would have loved to have been at that show!😊Back then the concerts would go on for 3 or 4 hours. But in 1970 I was only 11??
@@williamflinchum-qo6ch I was only 9. Took me awhile to catch up!
it used to be quite easy to download whole shows from the internet archive, but as this practice grew in popularity, not everyone was thrilled with the idea . won't mention any names lol
thanks greatly for the photo montage behind the music, a beautiful labor of love it certainly is !!!!!
Here I am at 63 hearing great music I never came across and watching recorded live concerts of groups I never got a chance to see live. Not to mention music and performances going back 90 years archived for future generations. Unbelievable!!!
It's a beautiful thing
Jim, you are never too old. Go see Dead & Company, do a little shakedown, and enjoy!
No ego. Just creativity & electricity. Happenings like this are of the past; no more. I’m 24 and I don’t believe we will ever get back to doing it like this.
that's a horrible outlook
Phil really leads this whole thing...he's just all over the place and driving the bus! We're so lucky to have him playing almost twice weekly now in San Rafael...wish i could get to his b.d. party next week in Cap Theater...have a blast out there for me...whew!
I sure miss those days at Terrapin Crossroads 3 or 4 times a week, I shot video for years in the front row, good tmes brother.
Holy!
phil is always no. 1 when it comes to dark star imo
his 75th at the cap was great, the local fd awarded him for (almost) singlehandedly reviving the whole downtown economy !!!
Some of the best 26 minutes of music ever recorded. That Spanish jam really got me movin.
My heart really breaks for Peter Green. Always the same 'ol song and dance, he just never gets the recognition that he really deserves.
Hey! Don't look (on the stage) but about half of his band, Fleetwood Mac, sat in on this beautiful moment in history. I love them all so very much!
Peter Green "established" Fleetwood Mac long (Hypnotized and Oh Well) before Stevey Nicks showed up. Which I have NO COMPLAMAINT about, Stevey brings it.
I still offer "Oh Well" as one of the best FM tunes? Especially as rendered by TP&THB in Gainesville. If Tom Petty covered your song, it meant more than something.
@@raystreu5763 #facts!
Duane feels in his soul that he has a special gift that was meant to shine amongst men, above all others. He knows his future. And yet he allows himself to meld with others, sublimatiing himself in deference to the creation of something greater. He doesn't have to play the star.Garcia the same. That is musicianship.
What in the world are you talking about? Did you personally speak with him and he told you that?
Rest in peace, Peter
Condolences
Just Peter!?
@@neillbaxter9613 he recently just died, everyone’s been dead for decades
and duane and jer and all the rest who have flew on
@@bluesriot2 One thing that always bothered me about this recording is that Owsley recorded everybody on the bill but Arthur Lee and Love, because he did not particularly care for their music. I know that Arthur is playing some instrument in this jam and maybe Johnny Echols is too. I love the dead but I also love Love and I wish that I could have heard their set.
Simply beautiful artwork shots! Quite a collection of poster and album art from the early days.
Greatest version of a masterpiece. I was at the concert and the band combo was epic
July 1973, Mountain Jam, Watkins Glen racetrack NY,...oh man was I trippin,.....Allman Bros, the Dead and the Band,...what a time, what a time
ive heard clips of this show and never realized the band was there until now, 3 of my all time favorites from back when music was actual music
My dad was there and I’m jealous of you both.
You do know there's something vastly more substantial by adding Fleetwood Mac to the title. I don't think people realise how iconic it is. People don't realise the worth of Duane Allman and Peter Green playing together. Disappointing people don't realise what they're sitting on.
Peter Green was a monster player.
Saying this as a 23 year old guy born in '95 with eclectic musical influences: this is a treasure. Honestly brings a tear to my eye hearing The Dead, Allman Bros and some of Mac just jamming together. These are some of the finest musicians to ever walk the earth. The thought of Duane, Jerry and Peter playing together is the stuff of dreams, let alone having all the rest of the Dead, Gregg, Oakley... Was dickey there? This is a gem.
Indeed! Fortunately 37 years older than you, but just close your eyes in a dark space with sweet smell of smoke in the air and you are there!
Love your comment and totally agree as a 31 year old born in 90' jerry/duane/and peter sharing one stage WOW!!! NOT TOO MENTION ALL THE OTHER INSANE TALENT! BUT gosh damn that is 3 gods gracing the stage at once the people present for this show seen a once in a life time event unfold right in front of their eyes
Well said.
What an intelligent young fella you are😊
At almost 70 years of experience, your insight into what was, compared to what we can access today is more than insightful. Gives me hope that "Light and right (turn left here)" can carry us though this BS. Onward through the fog, to Terrapin Station!
Thank You!!!! This is? Truly A Gym💚💜 👽👽🎸🎸 We Miss Jerry Duane And Greg Tears And Cheers For All Three🌹🌹🐢🐢🌹🌹😄😁😂😭WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!😫💙💙
This-came ON ON MY auto play ,i sat down and was memorized and the shot at start all on stage,Peter Green look him up,blow your mind

I am 68 and this has all been the best ride i have ever been on!!! Praise the 60's!!!!
If this was the show that started at Midnight and went until about ten, I was there. And remember almost none of it.
I remember, the audience shouted out,,,,,,," Play all night"...Bill Graham let them, so cool. LSD in NYC, was it legal in the Fillmore? Punchbowl?
but when you signed on to "live in the moment for the moment bye the moment"
you knew that "remember almost none of it" was very possibly part of the contract?
At Slug's jazz club in the far east (between aves. B & C they really did play all night - McCoy Tyner till past 4 am, and leaving Slug's when Sun Ra and the Arkestra were still going strong past 4 am! yes, that was a great time for music, whether Fillmore East or Slugs!
so cool
Good times. 😆
My first Dark Star ever. My best friend, who brought me to my very first Furthur show and helped me get on the bus, put this on while we smoked a bowl and we both just floated off. I think I was in tears near the transition to Spanish Jam. Made me a Deadhead for life. Thanks friend and thank you to all the people that made this amazing night possible. Still never fails to raise goosebumps on my arms every time. Happy 50th to my favorite show ever
Also, I honestly love the part where the audio source changes. You can just hear the sound of the ROOM, ahhhh.
Once you are "touched" you are forever one of us. No way out...
Welcome to the better side of "life".
50 years ago and still the best of today’s stuff
The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band. That makes for such a badass jam.

one of the least appreciated albums ever-but not by me
Yawn!
If once...just once....we could’ve had a full length Dark Star > Mountain Jam that lasted the full 90 minutes
Rabbi Ingber ... did you like Bob Welch?
This music is truly the stuff of dreams…it makes you wonder …dream…aspire…
The sound quality of this is Incredible!!!!! Thanks for posting..This Spanish is the mountain top…Pinnacle of Music in my opinion.
scintillating performance ... I close my eyes feel their warmth embrace me and gently take me into the taste and smell of that fresh falling snow ...
Listening while doing yoga! Perfect! Namaste!
I’ve just died and landed in hippie heaven thanks so much for this! ♥️🎧♥️
Don't miss the second part of this jam! czcams.com/video/0xNm2nVETZc/video.html
After a second listen I definitely can hear duane throughout. He does a great job fitting in with the dead. At the very end his tone and style pick up nicely and sounds more like the ABB
Jesus...I could listen to this line up for hours. I think my brain is melting. some really wicked licks i this recording
Love the opening to this WBCN 104.1 Boston being from Boston it brings back alot of good memories
Dueling Duane and Jerry. Next level stuff. Masterclass. 🎸
Don’t forget Peter
So, so happy that I get it. Good night Greg Allman.
I could listen to them Jam for HOURS!!!
Holy shit, it maybe 48 yrs. after the fact, but they just melted my face right of my head.... & it felt oh so Good... Yum....

Superb way to test out new headphones which is exactly what I'm doing.
Fiftieth Anniversary of this amazing group of musicians coming together.
Absolutely, fabulous performance music. Thanks for posting them.
one of the greatest acts ever assembled . one new years I was lucky to see the Allman bros with Garcia and Boz Scaggs

Incredible sound qual on this phone!!! Thx whoever!
Whoever says you're welcome!
Thank you thank you for this, what a gem, and great pics of Duane I've never seen before .
I can't believe it!! All these tracks with Duane that I never heard!!
+kookokoe Yeah me too that funny
same
He was the best slide guitarist ever and the best guitarist Al Di Meola, my brother says that jimi could play a little Al but Al could play ALL of Jimi. And Al has to be my most favorite guitarist ever as I am going to listen to him for the rest of the day diffinently the fastest and clearist. My jaw dropped 17 flights back in 78 when I joined the navy you check him out. He is phenominal!! please tell me about it, as I had one person that agreed!!! rkstaton57@gmail.com
No one can do Jimi. Not even Al.
Ray Staton
Except Di Meola's playing sounds the same. I love his style, one of the fastest players, as well.
His fusion work is his best, but he didn't have the imagination, or songwriting ability that Hendrix did.
Duane starts at 24:53, just a bit before Greg joins in and Peter starts even earlier (somewhere towards the end), recognizable by his Kossoff-like vibrato.
...so not much if a proper jam really but still a historic timepiece of some sorts.
The 70's the generation of real music
Unfuking real , 69 to 74 probably my most fav yrs for me and Jerry 🎶🍄🎼🌹🙉☠️🍄music. Just happy to be in the right place at the right time and age. Unexplainable 🤪🍄🤪makes me miss him all the more😢☠️🌹☮️🍄💜
Bill Shechtman I agree 69-74 seems to be when most of my all time favorite music was released .
wow doesn't get any better than this! The Dead with the Brother a mosh of head jam!!!
Absolute 🔥 of a jam!!!!! The Dead Rulez!!!!!
Thank you so much for posting! My response to Bill Walton's passing has been to listen to particularly outstanding Grateful Dead shows - and this one featuring ABB + Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as special guests is one of the best. Alas, by the time I saw ABB and Mac, Duane Allman and Barry Oakley had passed away and Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer were long gone. Although both bands were still terrific, all aforementioned stalwarts proved irreplaceable.
1970 - wow what a year that was-I was in the middle of the vast ocean, heading for Australia, 12 years old and watching the skies with my telescope from the deck of a big ocean liner, the sky was open and the future was immense.
I was in HS worried about getting drafted and sent to Vietnam!
Crisp Audio Thank you so much!
I'm surprised that stage didn't collapse with a power of talent standing all at once .
No egos just musicians , how it should be done , not like today . Big FONTS for headliners (sigh ) How I wish I was there .....
Simply unbelievable music that the world missed
I do remember Duanne Allman. Grateful Dead, Gerry Garcia, Genius. Masterclass.
Awesome share thanks. I never grow tired of this jam people. Like how you added an excerpt from Phil's book. Really enjoyed reading. My favorite part is him writing about the '95 Spring show in Philly PA. That Visions Jerry did is top shelf, watched it several times and moves my soul everytime. When Jerry sings the
"howls in the bones of her face" part I get goosebumps ertime....
I sometimes think back to the older disciples in school that told us magic stories about Gratefuld Dead, ABB and other mindblowing bands. Are they still listening to the music that made our mouth flow water like the Niagara Falls? I still do! There`s no stopping even at 60.
The younger generation likes jam also
The Dead and the Allman's.......it's what music is all about!
the only two bands i ever cared about, play their records all the time, i am 62

In heaven I get to sit in and jam at this exact moment.
Cool, I'm gonna look up David and see if he'll play harp with me 😉
we had so much fun there and met alot of cool groups when bill was alive.
I am not a Dead fan, but I have heard some of this show and it was really interesting how Jerry and Bob just laid back after a while and let Duane and Peter melt everyones face. Arguably one of the greatest "guest appearance" lineups of the era.
Joe M Joe, check out PERRO - Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra. It's David Crosby and Jerry Garcia, with members of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and others. Like this one: czcams.com/video/3QrtLof82qM/video.html
Joe M Garcia and Weir came from a bluegrass background where it is customary for musicians sit back and take turns soloing. It wasn't a stretch for either to sit back and let other musicians shine.

Akin to a musical communion. Like having a house guest. Hospitality is key. Keep the guest engaged, support the experience. Celebrate if they win a round of cards. Get them a drink; et al....make them feel at home. Make a memory. 40+ yrs on. If you are listening to this...mission was accomplished.

Young Lady, Don't forget Country Folk Rock. It was a very large part of the receipt. This is the sound of my generation.....
So crystal clear you can hear someone light their lighter right in the first couple seconds.
I listened to WBCN 104.1 Boston for year and years.
Omg! Thanks for posting! I've read that Jerry and Duane jammed on this song and I've been looking for it for years!
Excellent jam. Two of the greatest jam bands ever. The godfathers of improvisation. I also enjoyed the video you put together for this. I`ve been into the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers for close to 35 years now and many of these photos I never saw before, Great job dude.
Fleetwood Mac August1967-May 1970. You've missed one. There were three.
Listen closely to he mix, Peter Green's mix is buried. Peter Green scared Bear to death. Peter Green made Jerry pedestrian. This is was all about Green, and Duane Allman.
It just confirms that Fleetwood Mac was one of the greatest Blues rock bands of all time.
SisterRayVU68 What a shame Peter was buried in the mix. Kinda like the Hendrix/Winter jam and Hendrix/McLaughlin jam tapes. Jimi's guitar is overpowering in those mixes too. BTW does Danny Kirwan get a solo SisterRay?
Robbie Robinson Danny Kirwan is there for the following Lovelight, but not here. Green and Alllman get more playing time upfront in the mix for Pigpen. I've noticed both Allman, and Green are in the background by the last ten minutes. Then you can hear Allman come back in the last two minutes.
pretty sure jazz musicians are the godfathers of improv.
This brought me to tears. Sympathetic players
Thats the defanition of a true musician 3 GREAT guitarist on stage and no one trying ti upstage anyone! All about the music
Thank you so much for sharing, but also loooooveeee the quotes in the description, wowwww I love that type of stuff when one musician is floored by another and or when you see or hear them appreciate this all for what it is n how rare as much as we, the fans, do
Amazing talent and sounds on that stage ! R.I.P Brother Gregg ~
😮 It’s like the guitars are talking to each other, and they’re going off on tangents during their conversation!
I think it’s funny how many people associate the music with enjoying being drunk or taking drugs- I was never one to do that, but I never felt as if I needed anything to enjoy this. Born after 1980, square smothering parents- no wild concerts for me in my youth!
The music in itself creates a “high” for me! 😂
Understand, completely.
Jerry, Duane, and all that helped.
May God bless.

@@kingdomrhye1180”someone else” JFC. BERRY FUCKING OAKLEY. And, some accounts have it going that Phil sat down because Oakley took the bottom end away from Phil, because BO was one of the best blues bassists to ever pick up the instrument.
