Eric Clapton & Duane Allman - Jam 5

  • Recorded Live at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida, USA August 02, 1970.
A few uninspired days into the Layla sessions, Dowd, who was also producing for the Allmans for their album Idlewild South, invited Clapton to an Allman Brothers outdoor concert in Miami, where Clapton first heard Duane Allman play live. The Dominos were sneaked into the show with the help of Dowd and sat between the riser and fans below. At the concert, Dowd distinctly remembers:
"Duane was in the middle of a solo; he opens his eyes and looks down, does a dead stare, and stops playing. Dickey Betts is chugging along, see Duane's stopped playing, and figures he'd better cover, that Duane must've broken a string or something. Then Dickey looks down, sees Eric, and turns his back. That was how they first saw each other."
Formal introductions were made after the show. Eric invited the entire band to Criteria Studios for a jam. After the concert was over, they all came back to the studio and jammed until approximately 6:00 the next night, Dowd remembered. "They were trading licks. They were swapping guitars. They were talking shop and information and having a ball no holds barred, just admiration for each other's technique and facility. There was no control. We turned the tapes on and they went on for 15 to 18 hours like that. You just kept the machines rolling. I went through two or three sets of engineers. It was a wonderful experience."
Those jams can be found on the second CD of The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition. After the all night jam Duane had hoped he would be able to sit in the studio as an observer while the Dominos recorded, but Eric would have none of that. According to Dowd, Clapton told him, "Get your guitar. We got to play." When Duane arrived at Criteria Studios on 28 August to play on "Tell the Truth", the sessions were lifted to a higher level.
After the jam sessions Clapton invited Allman to become the fifth and final member of the Dominos, but Allman demurred, remaining loyal to his own band.
After the recording of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, the group undertook a drug-riddled and vice-prone US tour that didn't include Allman, who had returned to The Allman Brothers Band after the recording process. However, Allman did perform two shows with the group - at Curtis Hixon Hall, in Tampa, Florida, on December 1st 1970, and at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, New York, the following night.

One of the best guitar duos EVER! What a shame they only had a short time together, Duane brought out the best in Eric. They challenged each other, and you can hear it in the licks. I still miss you, Duane. Best slide in the world, all time!

I first saw Duane playing with Delaney and Bonnie at Carnegie Hall of all places.....Eric had just finished his tour with Delaney and Bonnie in England so I thought he'd be coming to the states next with them....got tickets thinking I'd see Eric Clapton with Delaney and Bonnie..... instead there was this guy with long blonde hair wailing his ass off and low and behold it was Duane Allman......that was the night I said to myself I want to play like that guy .....he was magical on that stage .... I was 17 in 1969..... I'm 70 now and still play....

There's two qualities to Duane Allman that others didn't have. He was a dominant force and he was an emotional player. He made others better around him with a fortitude every second that pushed forward. Listen to interviews of the people who knew him. Also, understand he came into the Layla sessions and made that album. Derek was so down and out. I love Dickey Betts. But Dickey was pushed by Duane to be his best. Dickey wrote his best songs then. Listen to Betts solo on whipping post from Fillmore East. Its beautiful man. Emotional. Give credit to Dickey but Duane was there pushing him AND the whole band. He was a genuine leader.

The energy, the musical brilliance, the inventiveness, the era, so far away now...the music remaining as the profound connection to a time long past...this jam is for me profound. Clapton and Allman, profound. The loss of Allman, profound. Clapton still around, all, it doesn't get much better than him. Dicky Bettes Great Southern inspires but this is more like the finest port wine, or the smoothest joint one could ever smoke. Jam 5 just gets me cooking overtime all the time. There is not much like this in the world today - a far different world than the road these guys went down. The loss of Allman at such a young age is made all the more poignant and important by listening to genius like this. How do people learn to play music like this? How can they dream ump these rhythms and sounds? So brilliant. So compelling. And Allman gone for so long.

The spirit of hope, soul, a generation on the move, the love of music is right there in these pictures - now reeking with nostalgia, even to those of us who were not even born yet in 1970. I love how relatively un-produced, un-fixed these photos look compared to the airbrushed, glossy pics of hip people in music and movies in the last decade.

September 27, 1971 I drove to Dallas to see the Allman Brothers play at the State Fair Music Hall. Wrecked my car on the way and had to hitch hike to the show. That is a great sounding venue, a concert hall rather than an arena. Best live band I have ever seen live, and I've seen some great shows! I'll never forget the way they played and how Duane directed the whole show with subtle cues and his inspired guitar work. Waiting for a ride after the show I got to talking to a member of the "Children of God", a cult loosely based on Christianity. They tried to recruit me the whole time I was waiting to get a ride home. What a crazy night!

Glad you resisted the cult antics of the COG. They used to tell the girls to go out and find boys and have sex with them to bring them into the cult. They called it "flirty fishing." Interestingly, their cult leader was a Jewish guy named Moses David (I think he adopted that name, but I'm not certain). In 1976, I came to the place of faith in the Messiah, (Yeshua in Hebrew that literally translates "Salvation"). The Angel told his step father, "you shall call his name Yeshua (Salvation) for he will save his people from their sins," Matt. 1:21. I've been held by God's grace in the care of His Holy Spirit for almost 40 years. I am thankful daily for protecting me for false messiah's and religions that put people in bondage. The Truth, Messiah Jesus, will always set you free!.

I recently watched two films on Amazon Prime - the 1st about the beginnings of the ABB, focused on Duane and the 2and film was how the band carried on without him. Both were excellent for any ABB fan.
Also, just yesterday I watched a CZcams video of the ABB with EC at his Crossroads 2013 festival where Warren Haynes, Derrick Trucks and Eric Clapton got ir on with "why does love got to be so sad" Damn, if Derrick isn't the reincarnation of Duane!
Truly sad I never got to the Filmore East back in 71 ...just a little tyke still in middle school and barely listening to anything remotely what I consider worthwhile music.
