Thanks for this video. I have watched a few of your videos and they have been very helpful in making my profile better than when I started though I know I still have along way to go. As a newbie to upwork without any previous experience in and outside upwork how do we go about writing proposals and how do you convince a client to give you a trial?
I'm just starting out and have been invited to a couple interviews. Is it normal, or permitted, to have text only interviews. I'm interviewing for a position in which we've only exchanged text messages. It's very awkward and kind of shady feeling.
I woke up everyday opening my laptop first thing in the morning to submit proposal and to check for messages from upwork for the past three months and there was no luck. On September 7 I got my first job and to my surprise it's a 3000$ project with a potential of increased pay. I still can't believe my first job is a 3k deal :0

I wrote a very personalized cover letter including providing suggestions for her website like you recommended. She said what really set me apart was my intro video on my profile (that is was personable and honest). Thanks for the tips, they really work!

I learned web technologies for about half a year because I had this goal in mind to be a freelancer and make money online 'cause I believed it would help me achieve my dream, but 3 months ago I gave it up because I was becoming less and less motivated and more and more exhausted from thinking that I would never be ready for that first precious gig on upwork. Is there any reason you are not using specialized profiles, Josh? I was forced to create one when I wanted to add a portfolio. It becomes a hassle to maintain two identical profiles and I wan't to delete the specialized one. However, I can't seem to delete it. How did you get around this?
Hey! I haven’t had the need to create one. I created my Upwork account in 2016 before specialized profiles existed, which is why I have a portfolio section. However I cannot add anything new to it.

Great question! I don't come from a PM background, but perhaps high-level overview of projects that you have managed. However, the best thing for you to do is search for high-earning PM freelancers on Upwork and look at their portfolio sections for inspiration.

Don't focus on the amount of proposals you're submitting. Focus on finding the best jobs that fit your skill set extremely well and then write attractive proposals for them. But yes, the more active you are in your job search process the more likely you are to win your first job.

It's been a few years since my account has been suspended. I tried to get it reactivated but Upwork upon giving me a chance to show what skills I had gained refused to reactivate it and said its not possible to do that now. Is there anything that I can do to get back the account?

@@kvk99999 That's an option for people who want one on one SQL Server DBA training and mentoring. It will be a weekly 60-minute training session starting from a beginner level, but targeting things that freelance clients ask for. I'm also working on a SQL Server DBA course that will be more organized with a leaning plan. However, I do not have a timeline on when that will be complete.
Big component of this is volume of quality proposals. 20 A WEEK. MINIMUM.
Self doubt has always been my biggest road block. I have no business working for less than $25k per year at this stage of my life and Aim to change it
Hey Josh, after seeing your videos I sometimes question my career choice of being a BI/ Data Analyst (not coding intensive data science or data engineering) will I be paid much less coz of this choice?
I know earnings depends on my expertise and many other factors. But, I am talking in general terms.
You can make a lot of money as a Data Analyst. I would recommend searching for the highest-earning data analysts in your geographic area on Upwork. That will give you an idea of earning potential.

The pomodoro technique is great for getting things done! I started at $25/hour and increased my rate when I earned 5-star reviews. I believe my 4th job was my first large project. It was around $60/hour and I earned a little over $20,000 on it.

Identifying a rate that fits with your experience level and average rate among other freelancers is definitely crucial.

Is it legal to do freelancing work while doing PhD in U S ?
If you're asking if having a side hustle is illegal in the US, no it's not. lol But certain companies do have "no compete" clauses and other contract items that may prevent you from doing contract work. You basically just need to review the employee handbook or contract details.

You may have to get creative and create portfolio items that give a high level overview of front-end apps that you've developed or helped develop for companies. For your photo or portfolio item thumbnail, you could use something like the logo of the programming language that you coded in. I also have portfolio items around other business items like my CZcams channel, etc. Hope this helps!
