The new LinkedIn freelance marketplace lets you create a service page to showcase your skills for companies looking to hire freelance talent.
LinkedIn's service marketplace marks an interesting turning point for LinkedIn under the wing of Microsoft, which picked up about 25 million new users in the last quarter.
The Service Marketplace is launching with 250 job categories, and the plan is to expand that to 500. At present, LinkedIn's freelance service marketplace is missing a lot of features that exist on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr.
Out of all the current limitations, the biggest one for me is freelancers not being able to search for jobs themselves. Clients can find you on LinkedIn, but you cannot find them. That means the freelance service marketplace is currently 100% invite-only, like Fiverr and the Upwork project catalog.
Upwork and Fiverr will continue leading the way and at the moment LinkedIn does not pose any threat to them. Upwork actually just had a massive 3rd quarter with revenue up 32%.
However, even with all the missing features, as a full-time freelancer, I love this move by LinkedIn. It shows firsthand how rapidly the freelance workforce is growing and evolving.

I particularly like Upwork's search feature which is still missing on majority of the platforms. These companies should also adopt it, then it would be good for both the clients and the freelacers. What do you think?
Completely agree with you bro! Having the ability to search for jobs when you're not getting invites is HUGE. I would love to see LinkedIn add a freelance job search feature in the future. At the moment, it has similar functionality as Fiverr (but lacking).

So far this won't make a dent in Upwork or Fiverr's dominance. LinkedIn will have to do a ton of work to get this working well, but I am sure they know this.

No definitely not. I barely used LinkedIn when I started freelancing. Lol
This is going to be big. Microsoft is having all the data in the world to lead this market, and of course with proper product management this will be the platform to go for freelancers. The competition from all these companies is in the benefit for freelancers, as I'm expecting better fees for freelancer. Thanks Josh for sharing this video; useful as always :D

I hide my freelance work from my employer. If they can see I'm freelancing on my LinkedIn I would be screwed.
I've heard this from a lot of other freelancers and I can definitely relate! I told very few people about my freelance work at my first employer after college.

You can apply for anything. The client has to invite you. If you’re asking if a company page will show up in the freelance marketplace, then you will need to determine if you can setup a service page or not.
I feel like if you're not already an established seller or well connected on LinkedIn already you'd have a hard time breaking into the market as a seller.

Hey man! I highly recommend that you focus on finding a combination of skills that you enjoy and overall demand. If you start something because it's easier to get jobs, long term you will likely burnout.

@@JoshBurnsTech well I feel like when I talk to people on upwork, they are looking to work. When I talk to people on LinkedIn, they’re trying to BS me. I appreciate keeping my LinkedIn for the BS and Upwork for people that want to actually pay for work. I believe the employee/ boss dynamic is very much real on linkedin still, while upwork deals with people that don’t draw those same distinctions. There’s a real beautiful thing on upwork going on, that I think is great, where workers are also owners and the vice versa. Freelancing is probably still a dirty word on linked in that means “unemployed”. I’ll probably put some services on there, but my heart remains with upwork for time being. Great vid!

I've found that a lot of people are hesitant to setup a freelance service page on LinkedIn because they don't want people from their full-time job to know about it. That's something you don't really have to worry about on other platforms.
