I like how genuine and how respectful they were about their opinions. They're also calm and didn't over exaggerate like some vloggers who tried Filipino food (it sometimes seem fake.) Thank you for your honest review. In general, I'd rather the person give an honest but respectful opinion (even if they didn't like the food) vs an overexaggerated review of how good the food was, which they could just be saying to please the Filipino audience for views and likes.
And to answer your question about what Filipinos classify as; in the Philippines, they've only ever considered themselves as Asians because politically they are part of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian nations) and geographically they are located in SOUTHEAST ASIA; genetically Filipinos are closely related to East Asians, just like other Southeast Asians. Filipinos (an Austronesian group) originated from the same ancestor that modern East Asians originated from but split -- their group went south, while modern East Asians went North. The reason why Southeast Asians (especially the Austronesians) look different from East Asians is because, other than having genetic admixture in their DNA (Negrito/Melanesian and, or South/West Asian ancestry -- Indian, Arabs, etc.), they retained the original features (tan skin, wider nose, double eyelids, etc.) of what East Asians today would look very similar to, if their features hadn't evolve to adapt to their cold environment. But essentially, Southeast and East Asians are basically one race, what scientists call "East Asian-related race." The outdated/obsolete term was "Mongoloid race."
In short, Filipinos are Asians. It's only the Filipino Americans that have an identity crisis. And technically, it's Pacific Islanders that are genetically related to Austronesians (Filipinos, Indonesians, Malaysians) than the other way around because they are descendants of Austronesians. Pacific Islanders just have a higher degree of Melanesian ancestry (around 20-25%) compared to the average Austronesian person. Hope this wasn't too confusing.

Im also Filipino and iwhen i learned about Austronesians, that's when i considered myself as pacific islanders by how we are more closely related to them than most asian nations in terms of language and culture... You will be surprise we count numbers the same as small nations like samoans or havaii from hawaii and even malagasy from madagascar... We can see that our ancestors are prominent sea farers before the age of colonization of europeans... Like why the northern tribes in luzon do tattoos like the tribes in new Zealand.. in hawaii, their language always ends in vowel but there are some phrases that seems understandable by tagalog speaker if you read it but if you hear it, it will be hard... It amuses me watching yt channels who specializes in languages so hopefully it will give you some knowledge why there's a debate regarding this...
One thing is for sure, we are a mixed nation but personally, even though i have western mix and chinese, the main root since i speak tagalog I consider myself pacific islander

Most Filipinos, especially the native ones like myself who were born and raised in the Philippines classify as Asian. I've never heard anyone from the Philippines, living in the Philippines, who are by blood Filipino whether mixed or full, classify as Pacific Islanders lol I've only ever heard Fil-Americans bring this up. On a similar note, we do have this concept of different "ethnic beauties", aka whether you are mestiza (western looking), tisay, (white complexion) chinita (chinese-fil), morena (tan skin) -- bc we're so mixed ethnically haha but filipino asian regardless

This is mainly a Filipino-American issue, which is rooted in the American census, where people identify their race or ethnicity. We don’t have this type of census in the Philippine, that’s why we are not familiar with the term “Pacific Islander”.
When you hear a Filipino calling him or herself a “Pacific Islander” it’s most likely a Filipino-American, because the vast majority of Filipinos in the Philippines would never identify as Pacific Islander.
      Here’s a little history lesson.

so True. Lumpia being a favorite food for parties or any celebrations: cook a hundred lumpia and will be gone in 10 minutes. The vinegar in Dinuguan is the curdling agent for the pork blood so to make it thick. The brown sauce is liver sauce. But there's a commercially bottled version under the brand name Mang Tomas. you would hardly find any Filipino who was born and raised and lived most or all of their lives in the country calling themselves Pacific Islanders. and beside that the Philippines has been grouped in Asia. There's no continent called Pacific Islands.

Sameeee. Some Filipinos abroad identify themselves as Pacific Islanders when in fact, we are actually Asians. The Philippines is geographically located in Asia, thus, ASIAns. Pacific Islanders on the other hand, are mostly living in the Central and South Pacific Ocean. They’re in a region called OCEANIA which includes Australia.
As a Filipino residing in the PH, I’ve never heard anyone identify themselves as Pacific Islanders here.

There are 3 classifications of being a Filipino it is either Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islanders.
•Filipinos are categorized as Asian because Philippines is part of Southeast Asia and it is the most commonly used to categorize Filipinos.
•Filipinos are also known as Pacific Islanders for a long time and our country is situated on the Pacific Ocean that's why we can also be considered as Pacific Islanders.
•There are also Filipinos who are classified as Hispanic bcs Philippines was colonized by Spain and many Spaniards intermarried with Filipinos, we are influence not just in culture, food, religion or languange but there are many Filipinos with Spanish Blood that we inherited by our ancestors.
It depends in the person of what he/she wants to be classified.

On the topic of Filipinos being considered Asian or Pacific-Islanders, as a naturally born-Filipino, I would say that Philippines is part of South-East Asia thus making us ASIANS. When asked, locals would actually tell you without batting an eyelash that we are Asians.

love when u said "you need a lot of rice with this" (dinuguan).. filipinos actually usually eat that with puto (steamed rice cakes) which is much thicker than just plain rice. i was like.. u guys just get it💯

Glad you like dinuguan, its just like adobo except that it has blood. we have it at parties or fiestas too. We put vinegar in most of our food so that it keeps even without refrigeration. Food in the Philippines spoil easily because of the humidity. The brown sauce is a thick, sweet, vinegary liver sauce for lechon and lechon kawali. The liver sauce and the spicy vinegar are both used for lechon kawali.

First time I've heard that we Filipinos are Pacific Islanders in Geography Now channel. But I guess we were identified more as Asians because we are near Borneo than the Pacific Islands (not 100% sure haha). Enjoyed watching you guys and happy that you liked dinuguan and you ate it right with rice 😊. One of my fave dish, we also eat dinuguan with puto which is a rice cake. And yes we like our pork crispy in the outside and soft in the inside like our crispy pata and bagnet you can research about it. 😉

Brown sauce for lechon is pork liver sauce, gravy made specifically for lechon recipe. While the original lechon is roasted, lechon kawali (pan-deep-fried variation of lechon but using only pork belly)

Re: that pork belly texture, it's boiled first to tenderize it then it has to be left to air dry on the surface. It's kind of like confit. You can actually just take unsliced bossam cooked hours ago (like...get it from a stall or restaurant but ask them not to slice it) and just deep fry it. There's also a pork leg version of this which is basically a no-oven home solution to making schweinshaxe or whatever it's called in Lorraine (the Spanish Empire was ruled by a Habsburg) and you can use whole jokbal to make this one. The sauce for the pork belly though...that's harder to DIY as it's liver gravy, but the pork leg version uses a spiced vinegar+soy sauce dip (think of a mix of vinegar for dumplings plus soy sauce with chopped onion and chili).
As for Philippine ethnicity...that's complicated. The Pacific Islander classification is more genetic and is from the US government, but doesn't take into account more current geopolitical and cultural changes. And by "current" I mean even by 1898 standards the PI classification was already problematic. Philippine writers and political figures under Spanish rule don't see themselves as Polynesian etc apart from seeing Guam and Palau as their brethren (which also used to be under Spanish rule), they see themselves as Malay in very specific terms and Asian in a broader sense, including those who'd much rather remain as citizens of a Spanish global political entity. In short...these are people who'd eat congee when it's raining and paella when it's hot outside. Another way to look at it: in kid cartoon terms, go to a rando Filipino home and chances are unless they're identity politics-obsessed American citizens you're gonna see a home that looks way more like Mulan and Raya with some Coco tossed in than Moana other than if somebody in that house has more traditional tattoos.
Hell I'll put it this way: I grew up with Jesus next to Buddha, Budai, and Krishna, dragons (as in the snake kind and the wyverns), and having somebody that isn't an architect help design the house because water in this area will make for bad juju and, oh, every entrance into the house has to have steps going up into the house...flood? No no no no, the area is elevated, you need steps going up because that's how you get good vibes in the house. Also don't buy a home at the end of a T-intersection...reckless drivers? What? No, that's how the spirits of the dead put bad juju in your home, THAT'S why reckless drivers crash into your living room! Anyways...rice cakes and firecrackers to away bad juju. (Basically...yeah I don't see how any of that is Moana. Almost feels like people just associate the Ph with PI identity because there are islands and beaches everywhere.)

Its always the Fil-Americans who are confused of their identity. They we're also the ones trying to call themselves Filipinx.
Anyways, the fried pork belly is called LECHON KAWALI... Not kawaii 😅. It means wok-fried lechon to differ it from a regualr lechon which is roasted. I love how you naturally do mukbang. It's like you just having a normal meal and not having a show. 💗

Few foriegners dare eating nor taste it but as I can see, you loved it! Philippines has lot of good food that you still have to try. And I prefer calling me, myself as Asian. Salamat!

Ooh, so yummy! Watching you eat made me hungry!
All three dishes you ate are among my favorite Filipino dishes.
The lumpia Shanghai is dipped (traditionally) in sweet & sour sauce & not banana ketchup.
The Lechon Kawali (not the Japanese kawaii 😄) may be dipped in a vinegar-cracked black pepper sauce, and optionally with chopped raw garlic, or Lechon sauce, which is that thick brownish sauce you asked about.
Classic dinuguan is made with pig’s face, but many now use just pork belly or shoulder etc, which I prefer. It’s eaten either with puto (sweet rice cake)-when eaten as merienda (afternoon snack)-or (for sure) with white rice as a main meal. I’ve not heard of dinuguan made using pork intestines.
Thanks for doing this, girls! 💗
