    I had to switch over to a UST projector a few years ago. I was no able to do a standard ceiling or wall mount projector. I ended up with a good deal on a 1080 Optoma GT5600 to a 100” screen. Works pretty good, but I hope to upgrade to a 4K UST soon. I went last last night with my 2 sons to see the Avatar Re-release in I-Max 3D at the largest I-Max screen in our state(We saw Top Gun Maverick here as well). I only wish I had the budget and room to install a ultimate theater like this in my home. Much appreciate you doing this much needed review.

    Great review! I think you really nailed some of the important features that will matter to most people in terms of brightness, noise, size and positioning. I don't use it for gaming so input lag is not an issue for me. I started with an optoma GT 5500+ in 2017 with an Elite screens CLR 120 inch UST screen and was very pleased with the picture but it was not 4k, so it 2019 I upgraded to the LG HU85LA and more recently to the LG915QB which has been fantastic. I cannot imagine going back to a smaller screen. I absolutely agree with you that the brightness level is very important during the day, but I think contrast and black levels are critical at night. The LG has a useful feature that lets you calibrate the projector using a specific consumer version of Calman software which takes care of the picture settings. One of the problem areas for UST's in general is lack of UST specific furniture. The low height requirement is very important and is difficult to find. Also as you mentioned, I would imagine the majority of people spending several thousand dollars on a projector will have a full surround sound system. Placement of the center channel is a bit of an issue. I repurposed a Sony rear projector TV stand with a little help from IKEA to make a stand that works and is a perfect height and depth for my setup. Salamander designs makes a nice stand but it is very pricey.

    We have two units. We started a couple years ago with a generic brand unit bought from bangood and recently upgraded it to a vava unit.
    You are correct in saying even the cheap ones look good when not comparing them to anything.a Our cheap Chinese import from bangood could asily project a 200" image onto a all and in a pitch black room it was awesome.
    The vava unit has a much better picture quality and is much quieter but it's HUGE! You are also right about furniture size being important, we have ours on a TV stand it's very wide at almost seven feet but it's very shallow and the projector hangs off both the front and the back byv about an inch. As a side note it irks me that we have to keep that cabinet almost a foot away from the wall.
    Lastly, our projector sits in an open upstairs loft. It's generally darker up there as the closest window is 30 feet from the screen. Our kids mainly use it to play video games as I don't like them playing them on my 85" LG. Picture quality wise I would definitely buy a high end 85" over a projector an 85 will be cheaper and produce a much better picture.

    I’ve been trying to decide between the Formovie and AWOL 3500. Formovie has those black levels but with AWOL adding 3D so I can still watch movies I already own that is a huge advantage. Now they will be adding Dolby Vision which closes another gap. Nice that a company listens and adds requests.

      Hi! Just a little anecdote, I went with the Formovie, delivered mid November. TBH, I have some regrets. The brightness is a huge issue. Even with a top of the line ALR screen, dolby vision is mostly unusable and daytime viewing has been problematic, even in our lower level. If I could do it again, I'd go with the AWOL, no questions asked.

    Amazing video. Glad Brian gave you a ‘hook up’ on loaner UST models to help make this video happen. I’ve given you some criticism in the past on major missing pieces, but this review really did a great job covering the gist of what people may need to consider when using or considering a UST projector in a lit room.
    That said, there are many who may also consider them in non-lit rooms. Basements and such without any lighting, but far too difficult to wire for standard throw front projection. That’s when a flat screen matters, but it doesn’t have to be a ALR screen anymore. There are many photos at AVS of people using their UST projectors on standard screens and they can look amazing.
    Obviously, if you don’t have that room accessible to you, then that would make it tough to do. As well, this took you a LONG time to setup, so setting it up again in a darkened space, or on a standard screen would have been difficult.
    It is just worth noting that the brightness of the AWOL gets trumped by the contrast of the Formovie in such a situation.
    Still, your results are consistent with the enthusiasts who have been using them for a while now.
    Much love to the list you’ve created. It is well executed, measured, and consistent without any glaring issues.
    Of course, people have no idea who most of the top manufacturers are. Such is life.
    Thumbs up!

      It seems most people are using UST’s to replace TV’s in a Family Room or Media Room these days. It’s worthy to note that, as mentioned in this outstanding and fair review, that the Formovie Theatre will fade dramatically in a well lit room and the AWOL Vision 3500 will hold it’s brilliance.

    • @paulvail7926
      @paulvail7926 Pƙed rokem +1

    Hi, Is it better in terms of quality a UST than a regular throw ratio projector? Given the same specs, I mean. It seems to me that the new projector screens specially tailored for USTs reject ambient light and could provide a better viewing experience? Many thanks!

    **Minor Corrections**
    ‱ The Nexigo PJ90 Aurora actually has 60 watts of speakers, not 30. 2x 15w woofers and 2x 15w tweeters.
    ‱ The JMGO does have 4 leveling feet that allow for about 3/8" (10mm) of correction.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Pƙed rokem +3

      That's the first gen VAVA, it's fine, but I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for it at this point. The XGIMI or Nexigo will blow it out of the water.

    • @topperdude2007
      @topperdude2007 Pƙed rokem

      One question - I have been researching USTs for at least couple years now and IIRC while the LS300 could take 4K content, it can only display up to 1080p on the screen (unlike the LS500 which gets 4K with Pixel-shifting). With that in mind, is it fair to include in comparison with the other USTs since 1080p picture might inherently look inferior to some people than 4K image? Great video as always! And hope you and your family are doing well and safe after Ian.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Pƙed rokem +1

      The JMGO is also 1080p. The LS300 was included as a less expensive option for people who want a bright projector. Unfortunately the tradeoff with the LS300 isn't brightness vs resolution, it's brightness vs noise level. If the LS300 was tolerable at 100% brightness it would be a good value at $1800.

    • @topperdude2007
      @topperdude2007 Pƙed rokem

      @@TheHookUp Yeah - as someone that is highly susceptible to Rainbow effect, I am a bit biased towards Epson's 3LCD technology and agree the fan noise level can be a distraction. While it might be fine on my ceiling mounted $500 Epson Home Cinema, it would be less so when customers spend $2000 on a UST like the LS300. While I skipped over the LS500 due to the lens design, I hope they address the noise level issue with the just announced LS800 - Epson has shown they can effectively control noise levels with their higher-end ceiling mounted projectors, so they wouldn't have much of an excuse to NOT implement it on the $3500 LS800 - fingers crossed đŸ€ž

    Hi, I'm from Taiwan, I actually went to test several projectors, e.g. Xgimi, lsp9t, v7050i, P2, LS300, LG HU715, jimgo, formovie Theater.
    Finally, i bought formovie Theater, It include the best cost performance ratio & amazing color performance(Another one is hu715 but not suitable for bright room & not cheap, if u have enough budget, u can try "hu915", it have higher lumen, 0.66dmd) & dolby vision.
    After buying home:
    Great sound make me amazing(b&w 15w*2)(I originally used klipsch rp600m)
    The temperature is lower than I thought

    Have you ever tested Xiaomi projectors? I was checking the Xiaomi Mi 4K Laser Projector 150"
    The image looked pretty good, but the input lag wasn't great for gaming. However, I didn't try to find if it had a "gaming" option.

    Great review! Would be curious to hear your thoughts on the HDR performance of these UST's and regular short/long throw projectors with MadVR or a Vertex2. It's coming up more and more with options for Dynamic Tone Mapping. I think with your detailed review approach you would unlock a lot of the mystery behind it and help all of us better access these options. I'm trying MadVR now and to bee honest, I don't know what i'm doing or what to look for. Keep up the great work.
