You [i]can[i] get a system large enough to desalinate water for several dozen people's needs. However, those systems are expensive to purchase, operate, and maintain. They are typically only used on ships that do not have consistent engine loading. (In case of consistent engine loading, flash evaporation distilation makes a lot more sense.) But if you need to desalinate water, and can't depend on a steady source of waste heat, you go with RO desalination. Special purpose ships mostly, such as navy, research, cable layers, hydrographic survey, offshore supply, etc. Cargo shipping and cruise liners will go with the much simpler waste heat to boil seawater under near vacuum conditions, then condense and collect.
RO system maintenance is a pain in the backside as well. High pressure systems have larger stresses, so are more prone to failure, and the membranes need special cleaning, and spares need be kept in a preservative solution to prevent microbial growth across the membranes.

    Cheers!
