  • Thank you for tuning into SurfTopics!
In this video I make a basic template of a Rusty Hustler surfboard. There's isn't much to it but I thought I'd share how I do it.
As always please provide any tips or feedback that would help myself and others improve their shaping techniques. I hope you enjoy the video!
My name is Brian and I love to surf!
I'm your average surfer who's passionate about my surfing and am always striving to learn more about surfboard design, ocean knowledge, and how to maximize the stoke out in the water. I'm an amateur board builder and love the challenge of making boards that perform in the water. It is such a humbling craft and I just love it!
    Hope you enjoy the videos!

I use a flat sided carpenters pencil ...only shaving enough to expose the carbon and freehand it.Take nose tail and mid measurements. Then I tape the pencil line.I After that I cut outside the tape line and true it all up with a planer..Also Stretching templates can create a flat spot. I cut and use spin templates to save space.

Jon, I try my best to avoid that flat spot. Always a learning process for me.

I heard for every inch you add to the length you widen it by 1/8th". My last template took me over half a day freehanding it because I never had a narrow 1" offcut length of Masonite board to use as a curve to make up the dots. I was also creating my own design . felt creative and satisfying but definitely going your route next time. I never had any friends surfboard to copy at the time and live on a part of the english channel in devon UK where there is only a swell wave in winter here. I'm the only surfer here in Torquay Devon as far as I know so no friends good boards to reference from. My dog has his own 7'6" mini Malibu, he's pretty good now in a 2' wave we only get in winter.. We don't have a car here to reach the waves 40 miles away. because 2nd hand cars are cheap and plentiful here but the insurance and maintenance long term in the UK is a 1st world rip off. The local trains don't have stations at some of these more remote beach spots. so I shape boards and just use my imagination most of the year. weired situation. I moved here from south Africa where I had surfed for over 45 years now Nothing. I may get a dirtbike and board carrier side rack . Great video like your shaping bay thankyou

Thats how I do it. If there is an imperfection you can just carefully draw it in by hand.
