- Attention all new and aspiring surfboard shapers! Have you ever wanted to make your own surfboard template, so you can shape an original surfboard from a raw blank, without copying an existing surfboard shape? Check out this video where Bill Stewart, Founder of Stewart Surfboards, shows you what tools you need and how to build your own surfboard template. Bill Stewart has personally shaped over 40,000 surfboards and contributed many innovations to the surf industry, including the beveled rail, single to double concave "Hydro Hull" bottom, and the 2+1 fin setup on performance longboards. So, yeah, Bill knows curves!

One of the most genuine guys in surfing, always willing to pass on the knowledge. 🙏
☺ thanks!
Jimmy fuller taught me the skill saw technique.
Taping 1\16 inch Tig welding wire rod to your door skin is great for seeing and determining shapes too if you go to a local welding shop they will probably just give you a couple they are 36 inches long they don't stay curved they spring back to straight 🤙
Great tip. Thanks Don!
I would love to see bills version of a mini simons
🤙🏼
Bill, it would interesting to see how to measure a board for making a digitized version for the CNC Machine
Thanks for the request. We're always looking for ideas for new content, what do people wanna hear, ya know? But honestly not an expert in the creating digitized boards department. We shape our originals by hand and then if they're magic, we have them professionally scanned for the machine.
@@stewartsurfboards4837 Bill, that’s what I’m on about. How to scan for the shaping machine. 48 year hand shaper here. I used to polish for Tony Delano, Star Glassing, Browns fields, back in the 80s……. Is he still around?
I might be wrong but the plywood shape is the template, right? I’ll love to know how to build that, you know, the right measures and so
Yes, the wood shape is the template. It's a thin wood called door skin, which is used to create doors. It's Bill's favorite material to make templates out of. As for the measurements, that's up to you (the shaper) to decide what measurements you're going for and what shape you want to create. There's no right answer there!
@@stewartsurfboards4837 thanks, well maybe the right answer will be, “once you keep doing surfboards for many years you will know how to do a template to build a great surfboard ” and I got it, thanks again for share video.
the skill saw was tho only way
