- BEST OF THE REST | The Attitude Eras Greatest Midcarders
The Attitude Era was a great time to be a wrestling fan. It was a period where, with the industry reaching a level of mainstream popularity it hadn’t seen since the days of Hulkamania, it would become cool to talk to all your friends about what was happening on Raw or Nitro that week. Of course, part of the reason for this was that, unlike other periods where the focus has been entirely on one of two top guys, everyone had a storyline back then. Yes, even those firmly slotted in the mid card of the show would be given time to shine and this, in turn, led to some of the most enduring gimmicks of all time. So, join us today as we take a look at some of the best of them in Best of the Rest: The Attitude Era’s Greatest Mid Carders.

No Gimmicks needed the Chris Candido story
History of the Midnight Express
Let me talk to ya the Eli Drake story
Gai-jins in Japan. The foreign menace
Even though I was young and dumb, I never saw the mid card as a mid card. I don't remember being bored or hate watching these matches. They were quality matches, gimmicks, and promo.
Agreed
Yes!
The kid card isn’t supposed to bore you or have bad matches lol….I guess that’s indicative of the current landscape
Even low tier ones like gillberg, wins hearts.
It's... b/c you were young & dumb that you don't remember being bored. It's only till you're older and jaded that you notice things, and then later start to resent the newer talent even though they're no different than the ones from your era.
Update: 183 of you are still children
This is why I love the Attitude Era, not the sex, not the violence, not the characters, it was the fact that everyone had about the same screentime.
That's what I loved about the attitude era, everyone on the roster no matter what their position was and guys who were in the mid card were treated not only like equals to the big names but they helped play a big role on carrying the company
That’s because they had great writing something they lack the last 16 years they’ve had great talent but it’s useless if the writing sucks and so you can produce stars
Vince Russo and Ed Ferarra
@@nlee4566 what about Cornette 😂😂
I was going to say this. You could see someone who’s further down the card and be in a storyline with a bigger stars. It was awesome.
Said Vince Russo. In reality, there was a bunch of dumb shit mixed in with good shit.
As a British wrestling fan I loved the fact that back then, even the European title was seen as a major title with guys like Shawn Michaels holding it
Yeah, but then they turned it into a joke.
Shawn dropped it to HHH in late 1997 in a manner similar to the Fingerpoke of Doom.
Then in 1999, Shane McMahon won it... and retired it.
Then Mideon found it in Shane's bag and became the champion.
@@mikeroagreschen5350 Nonsense, then why did they repeatedly call it "the coverted European Title"?
D-Lo Brown held that belt with pride
Personally I feel the midcarders played a pivotal role in the attitude era... letting wrestling transcend what it what in earlier year... Great video 👌🏻👌🏻
When you need to show gimmicks overall are changing, it was smart asl to give everyone a story and new image to sell for the 90’s. Everyone getting in the spotlight was a great move
Even at the age of 11 in '99, my favourite wrestlers were D'Lo and Al Snow (I even had a Snow/Head T Shirt).
The 2 of them were pure wrestlers and in style were precursors to the modern more technical/less brawling style. They should be Hall of Famers.
Al Snow was still under WWF contract when he appeared in ECW. He had been loaned to Heyman in an effort to change his gimmick.
Thats how u know vince and heyman are besties
During the Attitude Era, Mid-Card Matches were just as entertaining as Super Star Matches / Main Events.
I was eight-years-old in 2000 and in a world of Rock, Austin, and Undertaker fans you knew I sniffed glue as a kid because I always said X-Pac was my favorite wrestler. And still is.
Stone Cold with that kick ass Disturbed song
X pac was the shit god wcw dropped the ball
I liked XPAC too.
You must have sniffed some mighty powerful glue to think X-PAC was any good.
Reaching. To each their own tho. 😂
123 Kid/X Pac was HUGELY respected by almost every wrestling fan I used to know back then. When he beat Razor that legitimized him. And when he was with DX he was insanely popular amongst fans too.
I just think newer fans who may have been around for his latter years didn't get to experience his prime years.
Xpac with his abilities would be a main eventer these days. Imagine the matches a prime Xpac could have with Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, AJ Styles or Roman
@@NandoA130Seth rollins is the modern xpac
Fun fact: Victoria, who would go onto become a WWF Women's Champion, got her start in WWF as one of the Godfather's women.
Hoes* lmao
@Leopard Is King Of Beasts No, Lita debuted in WWF as the valet for Essa Rios and then overshadowed him.
@@stevegallo8483 but before that, she was one of Godfather's hoes in late '98
@@stevegallo8483 czcams.com/video/1eiW-zf61JU/video.html

Attitude Era "Mid Carders" are better than today's "Headliners"!!
😂😂😂
Love the topic. The mid card is the meat and potatoes of the show. Would love to see mid carders of every era
Appreciate the support man, will be going through other eras for sure 🤘🏻💪🏻👊🏻
@@WRESTLEWITHANDY You're The Best CZcams Channel Guy Ever
Val Venis and Godfather were awesome.
Sad you couldn't do gimmicks like that today.
You couldn't do those gimmicks during Hulkamania either.
@Whyyoumadatfacts? 🤷♂️ A lot of it doesn't hold up, but its success was undeniable: Hogan, Andre, Savage, Piper, Flair, etc... became pop culture icons.
Attitude area was magical. Not one superstar would bore you. Everyone was damn fun to watch.
*Era😂
Attitude Era can never be replicated..
Each and every person made the Attitude Era what it was..
Yes it can. The higher ups just refuse to.
@@extremepop324 No, it can't. That's why ratings declined during the Ruthless Aggression Era.
@@jp3813 That makes no sense lol. Ruthless aggression era is not the attitude era. Attitude era was wrestling's most successful era cause it was the most badass action. Ruthless aggression era sucked because of John Cena being shoved down our faces, remember the endless boos? Die hard fans weren't behind him, and the company itself was becoming more corporate and less tough and gritty with less characters and badass storylines. And yes another attitude era can easily be made.. it's art. Any kind of wrestling can be made.. clown comedy wrestling, attitude era wrestling, homosexual wrestling, weird fetish wrestling.. all what matters is if the art director and owners want to make a attitude era-ish project or not. Which they don't want to. They refuse to.
@@extremepop324 Ruthless Aggression ratings declined WAY before Cena got into the main event, and Triple H was the one who was shoved down people's throats. 2002 was when horrible storylines like Katie Vick was written in a desperate effort to keep the attitude. Further devolving later on into segments like 3 Minute Warning beating the hell out of two random "lesbians" for shock value, stripping Al Wilson down to his underwear in the middle of the ring, Kane electrocuting Shane's testicles, etc... They kept on trying to recapture that attitude magic but they couldn't.
@@extremepop324 Look at what is happening now. The shareholders are losing their shit because Vince banged some employees and paid them not to talk about it. How exactly do you think anything even approaching the Attitude Era could even be suggested to those suits?
Growing up I never saw these guys as mid carders, they were big names to me.
The hardcore title was the best thing ever lol, mankind elevated that belt
Even the tag teams during the attitude era was STACKKKKEEEEDDD!!! Dudleys, Hardys, Edge & Christian, Too Cool, APA, Test & Albert or T&A, Holly's, The New. . . Age. . .Outlaws!!! , Rock & Sock Connection, 😂 it's too much
D Lo was so underrated.. so talented
Even back then as I do today, I appreciated every mid card on this list for keeping me/us tuned in every week, the mid carders definitely were the backbone of the Attitude era thanks to Vince Russo, that man was a mastermind.
Funniest thing was having the WWF Attitude game having Head as a character you could wrestle 😂😂
And THIS is why the Attitude Era will forever be the greatest era. No other time in modern history has any company's midcard been half as strong as this. The midcarders of the Attitude Era were more beloved and got more pops than 95% of the main eventers of the past 10 years.
Just found the oldish 3-DVD-set of The Attitude Era tucked away. So good when Russo/Ferrara/VinnieMac were on point. Offensive? Sometimes. Being offended then wasn't a thing (Gasp! Shocker!!!) - no really, no one ever said "That offends me" back then. Thank social media 2009ish for that.
I gotta disagree with that. I think that it was more due to the fact that there was no social media around so we weren't aware of it as much, but it was definitely out there. Case in point like stated in the video, Right To Censor being created solely in response to the outrage from The Parents Television Council or whatever it was called. Plus obviously most of us were so young during that time that it was something we as kids or teens never really cared about or paid much attention to. I know at least me personally, who was in my late teens during the Attitude Era, had no clue about the reason for Right To Censor being created ya know?
Now we constantly know about every single insignificant "outrage" due to people feeling like they have to post about it on social media 24/7 🙄
I never considered all of these guys as midcard when I was a kid watching this era. Lol.
Sean Waltman was never appreciated enough. There's a reason he was something of a litmus test for newer guys.
You're looking at the Real Deal Now. A D-Lo Brown story. Cmon make it happen
Ken Shamrock X-Pac D'Lo Brown and Steve Blackman are my favorite mid carders from the Attitude Era.
If these guys are actually mid-carders then they were all at the very top of mid-card. I know none of them were Rock or Austin but the guys you listed were huge when they were in WWF/E.
I used to really like Steve Blackman. I don't know if I can say he 'deserved more' but I was really entertained by a lot of his matches.
I rate him and Ken Shamrock highly. I'd imagine the two would have made a devastating and technical tag team.
@@Nassyy Yeah probably. Sadly they seemed to come into the company a couple years too early. I feel their legitimacy would have went over better in the 2000's.
one year late but they definitely fit better with Ruthless Aggression era.
@@alrecks619Yeah he would have done business in Ruthless aggression era.
Underrated wrestlers are one of the most greatest performers in the business. Thanks for the new video 👍🏻
The D'Lo Brown head wobble.
Steven Richards... such an underrated heel!
Cool video! Loved all of these guys and I had a good idea who you were going to talk about next with each of the transition descriptions. I like how you did that!
What the hell was so bad about al snow eating his dog?
Back then watching RAW from startto finish was very entertaining, and it always ended with a great moment. Nowadays only the main event is watchable
Attitude era is still the overall greatest era in all of wrestling history in my opinion.
Too bad peacock is ruining it by editing it on the network.
Honestly, I don't see anything getting removed, even Chris benoit matches are shown
I disagree, i think the ruthless aggression Era had better use of the midcarders were more relevant and more rising stars, Kurt became taken more seriously and the matches were probably better. Attitude Era had better crowd tho.
X PAC is awesome so true super underrated
Thank God I grew up in the 90s and early 00s
X-Pac in my opinion was always the most underrated midcard and I'm actually surprised that he never even gotten at least a one-time Intercontinental title run because I think it would have been interesting.
Ken shamrock need his own story in the future
They were all OVER with the crowd, it was a wild time. Everything was just having fun, including the crowds, and the hundreds and hundreds of crowd signs.
I think of val venis, dlo brown, xpac, chyna, taka micinoku and evil, goldust, jeff jarett, droz before the injury, owen hart before he died.
X-Pac was literally under serious consideration for a brief run with the belt in the summer of '99. Supposedly he screwed it up with his... "extracurricular activities" if you catch my drift. If you think this is BS, I can't say I blame you, but history clearly shows him getting the upper hand on 'Taker more than once back when that really meant something. Personally, if Kane held the belt for 24 hours the year prior, I don't see an issue with X-Pac getting the same opportunity. The guy was the best underdog babyface in the entire industry.
Extra Point: Billy Gunn is on record saying X-Pac was supposed to win the KOTR that year, but due to those aforementioned "extracurricular activities", those plans were also scrapped.
X-Pac \123 Kid was awesome, I mean he beat razor Ramon in his very first match, that's a heck of a debut! Val venis, goldust and Mark Henry were all very entertaining. D' Lo Brown is a very underrated wrestler with great in Ring skills. Midcarders are very rare nowadays in WWE but they were better in early 90s! Triple H taking over WWE has been good so far and the attitude era was the best generation of WWE, it's part of my childhood! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks - really love the content and enjoy watching. Much appreciated
Really appreciate the support man, thanks for watching, hope your enjoyed the vid, many more to come 🤘🏻💪🏻👊🏻🤟🏻
Al Snow had the biggest entrance pops in ECW next to RVD
We love this page bro seriously a superb page
Appreciate the support bro🤘🏻💪🏻
D-Lo brown was one off my favourites, the head bopping and attitude he made the Nation off Domination specail.
Xpac vs Dlo Brown for the European Championship was some of the best matches.
Mid cards often happened to be my favourite part of wrestling.
Great video, thanks!!
It almost doesn't seem fair to call a "mid-carder" during this era a "mid-carder". They all mattered. I watched it all.
This was a fun trip through memory lane. Everyone was so cool back then.
D'lo was one of my favorite wrestlers when I was a kid
What a great time. Couldn't possibly happen now.
Not even close to happening now. Pretty much everything from the attitude era can never be done again.
I met both Ken Shamrock and Steve Blackman when I was around 12 years old when they had Raw in Madison, WI. My older brothers girlfriend worked at the hotel they were staying at. An Shamrock was kind of a dick lol and Blackman was nice as hell, he let us come in his room and take pics and get autographs. Ken Shamrock did sign an autograph though so he wasn't a complete asshole to me 😂 great memory from 1998! Another great video from Andy, thank you sir 🙏🤘
I’d be an asshole too if people came to
My hotel room wanting autographs instead of being outside the arena or parking lots..
Val Venus was hilarious I’m glad you mentioned him!
I'm actually surprised that Val venis and The Godfather with the gimmicks they had that were controversial at the time we're never a tag team because I think they would have been over.
And that could have led to a sweet rivalry.
Midcarders where my favs :D
I Love This Video 📸 Wrestle With Andy Nice Job 👍
I know Mark Henry is like a lot of other wrestlers and is no stranger to being repackaged and has been repackaged numerous times throughout his entire career but I think the character sexual chocolate that he played during the attitude era remains the best version of Mark Henry till this day
Thank you for starting with a wrestling genius and an underrated wrestler. Haven't seen anyone else yet, and I'm willing to say he's the best on the list.
Don't believe me? Listen to him talk wrestling.
I enjoy most of your videos I would love to see you make one about the story of Viscera aka Big Daddy V
I grew up watching all of these guys as a kid.
Val godfather, and gold dust were the best mid card wrestlers ever. Thanks for another great video.
Best frog splashes ever . no. 1 is Art Barr the inventor of . Nobody matches that ! no. 2 . Eddie as he was inspired by his partner and friend Art Barr . the rest is up to debate . D LO had an incredible one !!!! Most resembling Barr . Van Damn had a gnarly one too in a different style , but brutal nonetheless . But who can top those i just named ?
Val Venis was underrated.
What about Test!?! He was one of the most underrated midcarders!
Both New Age Outlaws as singles wrestlers
X-Pac
Owen Hart (RIP)
Big Boss Man (RIP)
I know that Jeff Jarrett was talented... but for me he was "Let's see what's happening on Nitro".
Flashback in the late 90's
Val Venis and the Godfather, hell yes. RAW really hasn't changed since the 90s, only the world around it.
To this day, after years of not watching wrestling, me and my boy at work quote D-Lo's theme song all the time!
"Oooowwwwuu. I'm gonna kick your sorry ass out in the streets"
You do a list in the future that main event star who had goofy storyline like kurt angle with wig
I got an original Job Squad shirt, of which I'm very proud of cause it is very unique here in germany. People keep asking me at indy shows, what Job Squad is. 😁
I love your channel. The Ultimate No. 1, when it comes to Wrestling channels. Cheers. 🤘
Brock Lesnar was A WWF wrestler before he ever competed in mixed martial arts. His background was in collegiate wrestling prior to WWF.
I hate nowadays how being a "mid carder" is considered downgrade.
Midcarders have less expectations and can grow a fanbase better then stars
This is literally my childhood in one video!
Like everyone has said, one of the main reasons Attitude Era was so popular is EVERYONE on the roster was relevant, given their own gimmick and screen time. There were no matches for the sake of matches or passing time. Everyone had a role, personality and made each moment of the show worth investing time. BTW, Hand will always be one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Some of the best of Steve Blackmen was with AL Snow. I remember when Al was reading him a poem while Blackmen got jumped (when the Hardcore title was defended 24/7), Steve was fighting off a bunch of guys in the background while AL read him a poem completely obvious to the goings on in the background.
I was a huge Xpac and 123 Kid fan growing up.
Great video man!!
Appreciate it bro🤘🏻💪🏻
That choppy choppy your pee pee segment impressed me so much back then. It was awesome to be a kid watching attitude era wwf with my dad on Mondays.
D'Lo Brown is one of my fav wrestlers ever. I believe you should place here guys like Billy Gunn or Big Boss Man too. Guys like Al Snow, D'Lo Brown or Val Venis deserved more
Andy… think you got a few details mixed up, still…awesome video👌🏻
Also, I'd have to agree. Goldust was the spark to the whole era. He was like the match
Most of these would be the main stars of the show these days, thats how bad WWE has gotten.
Where would wrestling be without the mid card talent?
Awesome video! Rey mysterio was my fav from theat time!
You honestly think the Boss Man/Pepper storyline was worse than Katie Vick? Or Mr. McMahon's illegitimate child?
I AM GLAD THAT I WAS A PART OF ATTITUDE ERA TOO
The absolute best time in wrestling. So glad I grew up watching this. Watched the attitude Era be born lol
Nice work nostalgic to say the least.
al snow didnt jump to ecw as he was still hired by wwe at the time when he went to ecw as a talent exchanged

Crash Holly was funny and entertaining. Comedy in wrestling can be good when done right.
Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit were Attitude era too. So was RVD the Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, Taz. 2000-early 2002 is the Attitude era as well not just 1998 and 1999
Most would argue your point of early 2002 being Attitude Era. I've usually heard it that Wrestlemania 17 was the end of it. But yes, these guys were solid mid carders so you're correct on that.
That was a much stronger mid card than 98 99 . jericho also
@@tapan97 Real Attitude era fans know it really ended a whole year later. The next era was Ruthless Aggression. 2001 was definitely not the Ruthless Aggression era. There's so many reasons I can get into that explains why the Attitude era continued on into May 2002
Making us sit tight for THE YEAR IN 2000 REVIEW 😂😂 milk it bro
I always felt that the mid carders had the better stories back then because they were the show. The champions were always going to be the draw but the midcarders always put on the show for the champs
D-Lo Brown doesn't get enough credit for his ring skills. Also I just realised that Dustin Rhodes has made more appearances In these documentary videos than any other wrestler you have covered
