- Color correcting for video and films can be intimidating at times. So here is a simple way to get accurate colors using Premiere Pro and a color checker. You can fix the color temperature easily in Premiere Pro using the lumetri color correcting features and scopes. In this tutorial I am using a color checker by X-rite to film middle grey and then look at the in the vectorscope in Premiere Pro CC. You can also use a smaller passport sized color checker to do this same technique, which is really helpful when you are traveling and making videos! Hope this is helpful and if you want to add these to your filmmaking kit here are some links:

- NEW HERE? -
Howdy! My name is Nick Girard and I live in Portland, Oregon. I have been working as a freelance videographer and photographer, traveling around the world and making a living working for myself for the past 10 years. New videos on my channel every week! I upload vlogs, tutorials and films I make for inspiration.
If you've read all this how about a little kind comment :) Have a rad day!!
💼 Business Inquires - nick@nicksfort.com
Those really expensive color standard cards last a lot longer when you KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF! Great content, thanks!
You're 100% right, keep the grimmy finger off, not like I did in the video 😆
@@NicksFort certainly intelligent people subscribed to you appreciate the demo on how not to hold the card, and we appreciate the opportunity to bust your balls in good humor. Waving a hand from California
🤣🤣 anyone who says "bust your balls" is on my good list
Hahaha I was about to say the same thing 😊
I came in here for the ‘don’t touch the tiles’ comments. Was not disappointed 😂
Just purchased the xrite color checker for a commercial we are shooting next week. Hope this will help avoid mistakes, thx for this video!
You're a smart man! It's a useful tool :)
Final getting around to buying one from Amazon. Had to watch the video again to see how you used it in your workflow.
right on!
quick and simple tutorial, thanks - that color checker is a no brainer
Dude, “Get to The Freaking Point” intro was awesome! Thank you for not wasting minutes out of my day waiting for the content to show up!! I may have to steal this concept 👍🏼👍🏼
It's a great one! But it's also really really hard to stick with lol
Nice. I worked as a production artist at a printing facility that has the kind of huge-ass, more-expensive-than-most-houses printers that one would use to make something as color-critical as one of these, and made my own based on the same data used for the X-rite Colorcheckers (with some modifications for my needs), made from a aluminium/plastic composite sheet. :)
Lol that's awesome! "more-expensive-than-most-houses printers" hahaha
Thanks a lot Nick for sharing and teaching me something new. Right now I’m working on keeping all the videos I work on correctly colored in our agency. It can be a tough thing to do when there are numerous lighting conditions and and the situation is run in gun. These color cards are going in our tool set. Thanks so much Nick!
It's really hard to make things consistent! But at least you are aware of it and trying. That's really the most important step!
Lots of learning here! First video i ve seen this properly and quickly explained! Tks for the knowledge.
Great channel, I m already a subscriber 👌🏻👌🏻💪🏻
Thanks for the kind words!! And I appreciate that. It's hard to get the information across quickly without compromising the quality or my want to include jokes lol
Thanks Nick! My company just got a C-300 and we want to be sure we get the most out of it. Purchasing color checkers now...
That’s amazing :) congrats on the C300. That’s an amazing camera. Filmed my first feature length documentary on that camera :)
These have saved me in the past! Anyone watching this should grab them for sure. Have an awesome weekend bro!
Thanks Jason! Color Checkers for life!!! Hope you have a great long weekend too and rad that you got to meet up with all those youtubers and play with those gimbals!!
Would have liked to see you also use the eyedropper to set white balance to see if there is any difference between your method and adobe's method.
Definitely a good idea Scott! I am thinking about doing a live color grade soon and I might play around with that idea in that live stream :)
Yea he did not do that
Great post. I am floored when I see someone not including color checkers or knowing how to do white balancing when shooting. I just wish the price of color checkers wasn't so high. Thanks for posting!
For sure! But it's also important to remember that a lot of people don't know that using color checkers is a thing you can do :) so you can't hate on them for not knowing and yes they are WAY to much money...especially since it's recommend to replace them every 2-3 years LOL
Sweet. First good vid I found on CZcams with clear and concise colour checking process. Boom!
Glad it made sense for you and it was helpful :)
Thanks for making that so easy!
You're welcome buddy! I hope you have a chance to check out some of my other content too!
November 2019 - I got a one on one run through by an X-Rite specialist at their booth. Man that cleared up a lot of the mystery and threw in some time savers. Video and stills (Photoshop) using the X-Rite software takes care of many things. She especially liked showing the batch mode for stills, because she likes taking pictures on vacations, not spending hours at home color correcting when she gets home. I couldn't remember half of what I saw but yeah, if the cash was there, I can def' see the worth of this - as a system - not just the colour chart.
Right on! Thanks for sharing. I will definitely need to visit the X-Rite booth at the next NAB and get a full breakdown. I know the card is so much more powerful than I talk about in this quick video :)
This is really helpful!! Thank You
Glad it was helpful!
This is far the best video I found on how to use the color passport, love it !
Thanks so much!
So helpful. Thank you!!!!
Thanks! Appreciate the good vibes and I hope you have time to enjoy some more of my content 🙂
Man, I watched this vid 2 days after buying the passport version of x-rite. I would have bought the cheap one if I had watched your vid then. I know I can return it, but now I am curious on the rest of the stuff, see how I can improve my vids with it. By the way, new subscriber!
Thanks man! the good quality passport should treat you right, don't regret the purchase :) Also appreciate the positive vibes and thanks for subbing! Lots of good stuff in the pipeline so pop on notifications if you dig :)
How does this apply to creative coloring for a "cinematic" look? Should you get perfect first and then adjust or is that a waste of time. Thanks.
Chaz I personally like to get my skin tones accurate first. My preferred method for creating a LUT or a stylized color grade is to start with the basics (this being part of that) and then move away from them with intention. Soo it's really up to you, but my process often will include this step when I am making a LUT.
Man thank you so much for this effective but simple explanation on how to use a color cards. I was definitely afraid of them prior to this video
Thank u ! It will save me time in post
You're welcome and happy to help!
this is super helpful!! thanks for sharing keep the videos coming on color correction
Thanks Gustavo! I have a playlists here on color: czcams.com/play/PLBUyRY_6jX2-N6PPHJ5tkkwPKs07egM9B.html
For a newbie, this is awesome! Can’t wait to try it out on my next vid.
Right on Zac! Excited for you and how much control you'll have with your color now :)
Great video. Thanks for the info!
You're welcome David! I just dropped a live stream on color grading if you want to watch some real time color grading: czcams.com/video/rpbkqyAhQyc/video.html
A couple questions: 1) Where does this fit with the work flow? I like to do a rough assemble in the project bin but then the slating is cut out. 2) What are the colors for on the card? These are probably really basic questions but I've yet to find a really efficient flow.
I would suggest setting aside the clip with the color chips in a spot in your edit where you can come back to it. Then when you start to color correct you can go back to the clip and use it. I have a video coming out soon about some advanced color grading tips and one of those tips is super useful for workflow. I recommended staying tune in the next few months for that.
@@NicksFort Thanks boss. I have used your method since I saw your video and I love how it works. We will definitely be sticking the grey card onto the slate going forward. I've also learned about master clips which has proven to be a massive time saver. I look forward to studying your workflow video as this is one of my bigger issues with editing right now.
Perhaps a silly question but do you just need to adjust the video to the grey scale if you want to colour correct? Is that the the only colour that matters for colour correcting purpose?
You don't need to do anything when you color, it's all personal taste in my opinion. But understanding the tools can be helpful for getting a baseline that you like and then making the adjustments you are looking to make. Using the color checker is a good baseline for the grey scale and all your colors. Sorry if that is not the best answer but just practice and find what you like :) ohh and calibrate your monitor :)
I am having issues that my video will look good on my PC but looks way different on other devices. Would using this card help with that or would that be a different issue?
The final video will always look different on different devices so there isn't much we can do about that besides work on making it consistent on your setup
I like the video, man. But why do I need the color checkers when all you are using is the 18% gray? Is there a use for the colored squares? Anyhow, good video. Thanks for sharing.
Basically it’s more information about color, skin tones and dynamic range. The color patches allow you to see if you camera has a color bias (you can also play around with the saturation in post and see where that lands on your vector). The skin tone patches allow you to see how your skin tones reproduce. And the white and black steps help you judge the dynamic range of your camera(s). I guess it's just all about how much information/control you want over your color grading
NicksFort I see. Thanks.
This was so cool. I wish I would've watched this video a long time ago. You've given us a tool & the know how to get colors right in camera. Thank you Nick!
Well at least you know it now right?! Glad it was helpful, Lots of good stuff in the pipeline so pop on notifications if you dig :)
@@NicksFort Thank for getting back to me Nick. I'm looking forward to your next post.
A very helpful video but what do you do next? How do you copy it to your other footage?
I have a bunch of other color grading tutorials on my channel. Here's a playlist: czcams.com/play/PLBUyRY_6jX2-N6PPHJ5tkkwPKs07egM9B.html
Mind blown. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
How does this apply to shoot ing in multiple locations outdoors and at different times? Would you set white balance every time you change time and location? Would that in someway nullify the golden hour of sunset? Thanks!
@Angelo Cartier Thanks!
What Angelo said makes sense. When I am filming I set my WB manually frequently, especially with going inside to outside. Color is very subjective at the end of the day so please get creative and don't restrict yourself to much (but try and keep those skin tones looking normal for whatever lighting situation you are in)
So many videos on youtube showing color grading and the color checker is never shown (used off camera?) can't figure out why. Also, for the initial color check would a still photo be useful or helpful with the same camera as making a video? Thanks.
I would just get a shot of the color checker in the video mode (vs doing a still photo) if you are working the color correction on the video. BUT you can use a color checker for still photography also and it's SUPER helpful for a retoucher to work with so keep that in mind if you are doing still photos and want to really have it dialed in!
Great video! Is there a cheaper alternative for beginner filmmakers?
should be in the links in descriptionn
So helpful. Thanks.

Brilliant, loved the video, now subscribed and will check out your other videos. Thanks Nick.
Right on! Glad you enjoyed and welcome!
Really helped a lot. Thank you.
I've just stumbled across your tutorials, thanks for the great info! I'd love to see more about color, and how you use that whole color card. Those "scopes" are scary stuff right now so I've got a lot to learn.
Totally man!! I am planning on doing some live stream color grades sometime in the next 2 months. I am also going to make a few more color tutorials soon. And for the color card I don't often use the whole thing, but more so sections of it. But yeah a more detailed look at it should be done. I will add that to my list!
How do you use these outside when shooting streets, building or other scenes?
You could apply the same approach, just get the color checker in the main light source.
I like how you shot this in front of a window yet with a very well exposed shot. Assume it’s either the 120d or similar key light illuminating you. I am trying to find ideas as I am short on space to create content at indoors.
Thanks! Yeah it's a 120D
Amazing tips!
Glad you like them!
I guess there is a usage about the other colors but what is the point of buying this if you only need the grey?
No point if you only need the grey, just get a grey card. If you want to have color data then get this one!
Aloha, I know this vid is a few days (lol) past, but just wanted to say how helpful this was for a newbie like myself.
Glad it was helpful!
Another great video man

Right on! High fives all around! And welcome to the Fort Jean 🏰
That's super cool, thanks a lot
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
Brilliant knowledge being shared here. Extremely helpful, thank you.
Great video - thanks!
One thought - instead of taking all that time to mask off the mid-grey patch, how about just using the eyedropper tool (White Balance / WB Selector in Lumetri) to sample the mid-grey patch.
Seems to do the same thing (but quicker) as moving the orange-blue and green-magenta sliders by hand?
Masking is useful though if you want to look at all the grey patches, or the colour patches, in isolation, for fine-tuning the colour to line up footage from different cameras...
That's a great idea!
This is great. Thanks
You're welcome and happy to help!
So, I have a question. You seem to be just using the 18% grey, is that right? If so, why do I need all the extra colors on the card?
Yeah you are right and what if you're filming a wedding in a different lighting conditions and you will do same day edit, probably this is jot not gonna work. I hope someone will answer this.
Bruce, thanks for the question. If you want to check out this quick guide from X-rite they getting into the details a bit more: www.xrite.com/-/media/xrite/files/manuals_and_userguides/c/o/colochecker_video_quickstartguide_en.pdf
If I can chip in for a minute, the X-Rite rep mentioned their software can be used to save profiles down to "a lens" on "a camera" if you wish. Lens coatings differ, camera sensors differ, in color response in a non-linear way across the spectrum. So having an 18% grey test revealing 5% magenta needs to be removed, doesn't mean every color across the spectrum needs 5% magenta removed. And a German lens likely has a different coating process than what the Japanese manufacturers use. She said this as a matter of fact, not a "possibility." Hope that helps.
@@LiveMusicOntario thanks for sharing those details!
Thanks for the tip, going to add this to my workflow. Quick question... would you introduce the color checker card immediately after slating? Also, what cam were you shooting with and what's the color space? 10bit 4:2:2 or better? I'm wondering how much latitude is possible for lesser codecs.
You're welcome. This was on my C200 in the MP4 4:2:0 8-Bit: 3840 x 2160p at 24/30/60 fps (150 MB/s). Lesser codecs might get noise easier but it's still nice to have the colors for reference. Also I just dropped a live stream on color grading if you want to watch some real time color grading: czcams.com/video/rpbkqyAhQyc/video.html
NicksFort The C200 delivers 4K on 8bit 4:2:0? Does it give you 10bit 4:2:2 at the output?
D Hope you can do RAW LITE but I didn't use that here. This is from the Canon C200 website: Video:
Codec: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
Resolution: 3840x2160 / 1920x1080
Bit Rate: 150 Mbps (3840x2160), 35 Mbps (1920x1080)
Color Sampling: YCC420 8 bit

Great video bro. I learned alot
Thanks!! Appreciate the good vibes
nic, do you use it with polarizer on or off?tnx
You will want to use the color chips for whatever your shooting settings are, so if you are using a polarizer then I would think you’d use the color chips with the polarizer on.
thanks. you should do more
Thanks! I have many more videos on my channel if you want to check them out :)
Not to sound ignorant, but why wouldnt you balance to the white, instead of the grey?
I think the neutral grey is more flat and reliable...but I am not certain. The X-rite guide might offer some insight: bit.ly/35b4xWN
Simple and to the point. Thanks!
Thanks David for the positive vibes! Appreciate it!
I wish Premiere had the same tool that Resolve does that allows you to colorcheck a chart automatically. You just click a button, and drag the box around the colorchart, and click a button and it is done.
Oh man Ryan that's awesome about Resolve....I am going to start a wish list to share with the Adobe team! Also this makes me want to learn Resolve!
yes these are valuable tools and they remain valuable longer when you keep your fingers OFF of the patches on the cards.
you're 100% right, thanks for pointing this out. I had my fingers slopping all over the color patches and to get the most life out of the color checker you want to keep your fingers off all the patches and store is properly. I am going to amend my pinned comment with the X-Rite Rules of the ColorChecker: bit.ly/2S7mChD

the problem is you have to change these color checkers every year coz as manufacturer recommend..after a year the color on the checker start to lose correctness
Nice vid! I've been confused with color grading so I'll give this a shot
This is a really good way to feel confident in your color! I'd also recommend (if you're budget allows) to get a good monitor and calibrator. I made a video about that here ===> czcams.com/video/gEf_G_qOmwY/video.html
Really helpfull video !
If I'm making a short movie, Should I take the time to place the color checker in front of the subject for every roll ?
Thanks a lot
I would suggest using the color checker when you change your lighting setup or lens, but not ever shot
great video!! quick question, I have the xrite for photo, do you think it can double as a checker for video? thanks!!
Can we take a colour print of this GrayChart and use it for our works? It will cost
I have no idea what that means but yeah do it my friend....it might not work though lol!
@@NicksFort I mean to take a screenshot of this product and copy it in word file and then take a colour print of that page. Now paste this image upon a cardboard and use it.
@@praveenkirsur The quality of the print would not be the same as purchasing a grey card or a color checker so the results you'd get from this method would not be calibrate to the same level. I would recommend just buying the cheap grey card if you want to take the cheapest route: Cheap Grey Card: amzn.to/2IJ3tSZ

@@rysik19 Okay thanks! I hope to some day :)

I understand that you deliberately set up the camera to the wrong color temperature to illustrate this technique.
However, in practice I think it's best to set the color temperature/balance as close as you can before shooting your footage. Any color corrections you do on the footage which is compressed runs the risk of degrading other quality aspects.
100% agree, setting the color balance correctly is one of the basics of cinematography and should be a routine step for everyone making video content.
Right... but I think Nick was providing an "extreme" example. Sometimes the colors will be a little off due to other factors.
man i hate color correcting and grading. someday i'll warm up to it, but for now i'll just continue to try to be as lazy as i can with it.
I mean this method is basically the laziest approach with the best results. So that's a win win!
Will this work with 8 bit footage?
it should work to some degree with any footage
Great Video!!
😀 thanks
Enjoyed this. But off topic are you filming in a flat profile for your tutorials? It doesn't seem like any of the blacks are crushed but yet there's a lot if contrast. I'm having a really hard time with this lately.
Yes I am filming with a flat profile (I pretty much always film with a flat profile and then use one of my LUTS). Why not use plain white paper for white balance like old times?
It just feels a lot more cool on set with the color chips lol
@@NicksFort 😂😂
Can you mask on the Chroma chips on the X-Rite chart and dial them in as well as the white balance?
You can mask on any of the chips you like and make adjustments based on the selected chip which is super powerful if you are looking to get different colors to look a certain way! It's an awesome tool
