- Hi Everyone!
I can't believe it's been a month since I've uploaded my last video. This past month has been full of excitement and new adventures. Can't wait to share them with you all!
After meeting so many new families, the one common thing that I hear is how worried they are about their children adapting to a new life in a new country. Don't worry, I felt the same way. Have you ever heard the saying "kids are like sponges?" I've always heard it, but never witnessed it until now.
I wanted to create a video where I interview my children about their first year of school and their new life here in Portugal. I didn't formulate the questions beforehand so everything that you hear is pretty raw; including my reactions. I was actually kind of surprised by their responses.
Please be sure to put your closed captions on as I asked all the questions in English and they responded back in Portuguese.
Hope this video helps :)

I’m Portuguese - your kids Portuguese is just lovely!
As crianças são sensacionais aprendem tudo com uma velocidade espetacular , gostei muito de ouvir o Português falado por eles, foi muito bom. Parabéns a todos💕
The kids are speaking beautifully. I understood everything without subtitles which means they are speaking it very well. I’d love to see a video on your pros and cons list for moving to Portugal or abroad if you are keen? We have 3 young children similarly aged to yours and would love to hear another parents perspective on how the kids adjusted to leaving family and friends behind and starting anew, with any parenting tips along the way.
Kids are truly amazing at picking up languages! I moved to Portugal (Caldas da Rainha) at age nine so I can totally relate to them ❤
Your children learned a lot in one year. They're very cute and your daughter's mannerisms are very Portuguese. I'm 1/2 Portuguese and watch instructional videos but I don't get a chance to hear children speak the language. Thanks for sharing and all the best! (Mrs.Rugby)
My husband and I love watching all your videos, but this is surely your cutest video to date.
Your children are sooo adorable. My parents imagrated to Canada in 1959 from the Acores when I was only four years old, I can understand simple Portuguese (problem when it turn technical though)
My vocabulary I must say is not very good.
Needles to say I understood everything your children were saying perfectly. I felt myself feeling so proud for you and your husband on how you chose to move to Portugal and raise your family.
Keep up with the great videos All the best from 🇨🇦
Best video so far. Loved the thumbnail but I think every little girl wants to be mother's twin (don't tell Chloe I said that). If Lili don't like to read maybe there's a possibility she needs glasses or that's just a phase. Lili sounds a native speaker kid, her accent is perfect.
You are the best youtuber talking about expat life in Portugal. Enjoy family and life.
Thanks. She actually reads better than my son (who's older). It's just not her favorite subject. Thanks for the compliment and for watching too :)
These children besides being gorgeous are also brilliant! PARABÉNS……….🤗🇨🇦
These are the cutest kids ever. I love how the mom asks in English snd they just answer very naturally in Portuguese.
Que coisa mais bonita, que crianças maravilhosas. Isso sim, é integração perfumada de uma enorme sabedoria dos pais
Omg their Portuguese is so good !
Fair play to them, not because of their Portuguese but because It's a very difficult task to reply in a different language.
The brain wants to reply in using the same language.
It would have been easier for them to reply in Portuguese to Portuguese questions.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great video, plz post more...TYVM.
That was amazing guys !!! wow you both speak Portuguese very well and in a short time , I always said kids are like sponges they learn very quickly and same will be for Chloe, I left Portugal at the age of 3 and spoke Portuguese at home, my kids are fluent in English French and Portuguese since I would send them to Portuguese school on Saturday they didn’t want to go (missing Saturday morning cartoons lol) they attended till grade 6 by then they could read and write well now at the age of 35 and 34 my kids will also send their kids to Portuguese school too as they did, they are soooo happy to have the language and the culture still alive in Canada 🇨🇦🇵🇹
Muito obrigado pelos filhos. Estou estudando português agora. Obrigado pela história. Thanks for Your kids. I'm studying Portuguese now. Thanks for the story.
Adorable kids❤
Amazing, my kids are 7 months in and they can understand and talk but not this fluent yet. Can’t wait to see them this comfortable speaking Portuguese. Congrats to you all and enjoy Portugal 🙌🏽
Congrats, they're really fluent..
Wow! That is so impressive!!
Trying to get this done tomorrow, as they just told us we need it today via email.
Your children are so impressive. I am just blown away by how well they speak Portugese. Great video.
I used to live in the UK, my daughter lived there from 1month old to 6 years. We are back to PT now, 4 years now - she never lost her english skills, whatever your future, that is something they will have. Plus they are super cute mixing english and portuguese in the same sentence!
Wow that’s amazing how well they have done, they make it seem so easy.
Wow! They sound so fluent after just one year. Your kids are adorable.
They are awesome with their new language, I must say. Seems they think in Portuguese, minimal pauses or none at all in their answers, just adorable. 😊
So lovely to hear your kids speaking Portuguese! I could understand them, and I'm happy that they said they liked Portugal.
adoro o teu vídeo e é incrível que os teus filhos tenham apanhado português tão rápido em 1 ano e falando como nativos que são incríveis e parabéns.
Amazing...1 year and they talk Portuguese so well. Congratulations!
Great job kids!! Wish we adults could learn Portuguese as quickly.
I was wondering how they both learned so much Portuguese, then i remembered when i moved to USA when i was 11 in 1971. I LEARNED ENGLISH IN 1 YEAR. I hope you all enjoy Portugal and can we see their school n friends soon?
Adorable!
LOL “mais ou menos” that made me chuckle.
The best years to learn a new language
Lindos
Amazing Josie. They are already fluent. Good to see how quickly kids adapt.
Wow well done ❤
We are planning to visit Caldas and this Portuguese school in late November. So great to hear your kids have adapted well and are picking up the language quickly.
Your kids are already very proficient and comfortable speaking portuguese! and so cute!
Very impressive!
Que lindos! 😍 Sou Brasileiro e eu e minha família iremos nos mudar para Portugal em setembro de 2023 e seus vídeos nos ajudam muito. Muito obrigado.
Sejam muito bem-vindos.
Tão giros 🥰
wow...they sound really good in just one year, I really hope they will feel more and more at home in Portugal.. Often moving abroad to a foreign country where you don't speak the language it's very daunting especially for children. I moved when I was seven and ended up having to learn 3 languages at once, besides my parents no one spoke my language at that time. 50+ years ago we did not have all the digital possibilities to learn about the new country or start learning the language before moving.
Holyshit! Impressive!!wow!! 😳😳😳😳🥰🥰🥰
This is so cute Josie. We were in Portugal past summer trying to check it out. Love it and planning on over the next year. My 9 year old will be happy to hear Portuguese is not an issue even if he doesnt speak it before
Bravo!
Very impressive! Your kiddos are doing a great job! Pretty sure my 53 year old brain won’t pick up Portuguese that quickly!
So cute! They speak so well! Can't wait for my child to attend a school there & learn the language as well.
Your children are so impressive, Josie! They speak so well in such a short time. I was curious to know if you could share what prompted you and your family to move to Portugal? Apologies if you’ve already done a video on this. And if you’d rather not share, I completely understand! Thanks for sharing this video. It was fun to watch!
My phone doesn't translate for me, but it's clear that they're learning so well! Great video! Would be interesting if you could do this with an older child, who moved after the age of 10, if you know any. I think it's easier for little ones.
The boy (dont catch his name) speaks Portuguese very well with almost no accent. Lily i understand 100% but have a small accent.
Even Public schools the kids have the same education ask only for PLNM (help them out for a few months until they catch the Portuguese).
Wow
❤
Um ano, simplesmente SUBLIME.

Thank you for this amazing vlog!
Wow, wow, wow. So impressed. Oh, to be young sponges. I am actually impressed with myself... I understood about half of what they said... but it is so lovely to see how easily they spoke and with terrific accents. They are absolutely adorable. Do they speak Portuguese together?
Great questions Josie... you are a good Mum!
(p.s. I didn't see any translations... I clicked on CC but it only showed the English. Maybe I'm doing it wrong).
They mostly speak English to each other unless they’re playing with Portuguese friends. I do find it fascinating how quickly they can change languages.
I don’t know what’s wrong with the cc. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure it out 🤦🏻♀️
@@josieinportugal6454 You appeared to understand everything they said. That was equally impressive. Many people complain that it takes them years. That's why when I arrive I hope to be forced to do my best to listen and speak. I want to give myself the best change to be able to communicate in Portuguese.
@@JenShea thanks. My Portuguese is getting better daily. Still far from fluent, but enough to survive haha. Your Portuguese will definitely improve once you move here. If not, I’ll send my kids your way 😂
amazing! great job kids!!!
"Mais ou menos" is so portuguese 😁
Muito bom! Vai ser muito bom para eles no futuro!
Wow that's real good. They kinda have an accent, kinda sounds like they from Brasil. But in one year what they have learned is outstanding. Portuguese schools are a lot more advanced than schools in the US.
Very well little guys! (muito bem meninos!) 👌👏 🍰🍦🍨🍬🍭🍫
They speak European Portuguese very well 😊
AMAZING Improvement
So impressive that they are speaking Portuguese so well. Keep up the great work kids. On a side note Josie, after living now in two places on the Silver Coast, have you and your family found the weather to be fairly comfortable, do you find there is enough blue sky mixed in with the gray clouds? We are from the Pacific NW of the U.S., 8 months of rain/gray, and 4 months of fantastic weather. We have spent time in the Algarve and the Silver Coast, like both locations, it is just hard to decide which would be a better fit longer term. Thoughts? Thank you! Keep up the CZcams videos.
Hi Thomas, that's a tough question. This year, I have found the Silver Coast to be perfect temperature for me. When we first arrived last year in the summer, the temperature was a bit cooler than I had expected. It actually didn't become shorts/t-shirt weather until end of July. This year, I was wearing shorts in May. I know this summer was warmer than expected and last year was cooler than usual.
I have been comparing Lagos and Caldas and the weather is quite comparable (shocking). We have plenty of blue skies and the sun is always shining. I actually prefer a little of an overcast as the sun can be extremely hot.
One thing to keep in mind is global warming. I can foresee the Silver Coast becoming increasingly popular as the years go by. Hope this helps!
@@josieinportugal6454 Hi Josie, thanks for the quick response! Funny that you compare Lagos and Caldas, we like both locations, completely different vibe. Our family plays golf a lot, so this is the reason to be in either location longer term. I will say, the golf is a much better value on the Silver Coast. And real estate is a much better value on the Silver Coast vs Lagos. Take care, and thanks again!
Is there a way to get what they are saying translated? I tried the captions function but it didn’t work.
oh no! I'll try to see why it's not translating. To sum up what they're saying: They learned Portuguese from their friends and playing games. My daughter first started school without any friends and played alone. It wasn't until she was able to speak confidently that she was able to play with natives (versus only having English speaking friends). I asked them if they preferred Portugal or the US. They said they preferred Portugal because people are nice, they have a dog, pool, the sun etc. Overall, they're much happier here because they have more friends.
Thank you!
How is it being Asian in Portugal compared to the USA? Just curious. And what private/international schools are available? Does that make a difference in diversity?
Impressive! Your children are adorable. Can you tell us how old they were when they started at the school? Mine would be 7 and 10 so I'm a bit nervous about the transition.
They were 6 and 7
They going to be fine. The problem is when they start high school, If a teenager come to Portugal with more than 14 years old the best is to hire a tutor to help him/her about Portuguese, because the grades going to count to university entrance and the subjects are very demanding and very difficult to put on top of that learning a new language. The public universities are way better than private (cost about 900€/year to residents or UE passport holders).
If you go to a public school (they are almost the same quality than private) need to ask there about PLNM (they going to help a lot your kids to learn the language), lots of extra help.
In less than one year they going to know Portuguese almost like a local.
Sorry my broken English.
@@arturjcrebelo3275 Thank you so much for your feedback.
I may be technologically challenged but how do I see the english translation of what your kids are saying? I am on the edge of my seat wanting to know what their answers are and closed captioning is not translating their part for me.
Hi! Unfortunately, I thought CZcams would create generated subtitles, but little did I know that I had to upload them (still a newbie at this) 😂
To sum it up, they love living here because they have friends, a pool and a dog. They prefer Portugal to the United States.
I am planning another video with them and I will be sure to add subtitles :)
fast learners, can you practice portuguese with them?
And a small correction. In your reply "eu tento de falar..........." The "de" does not belong in the sentence. The correct one is "eu tento falar..........".Good luck to everyone.
Is it possible to get translation from portuguese to English?
