Honestly as a fraternal twin girl with a sister , I know a few things about being a twin. The author’s ( thank goodness they chose to have twins write the books) did a great job at writing them as twins.
    Some examples-
    1. The pointing out of differences in the beginning- in my experience, people automatically assume same gender twins = identical. Me and my sister when we were little always would tell people about the ways we didn’t look alike because we hated being called identical.
    2. The noting of who’s born first and who’s taller. It may have just been me and my sister but we were always trying to see who was beating the other in height. My sister already beat me at being born first, but I remember being thrilled to be an inch taller lol
    3. The differences!- omg I hate it when people make twins the exact same. Or when they make them opposites who don’t like each other. They are both different and sometimes don’t get along, but they still like each other. Their dynamic reminds me of me and my sister.

Idk about the story but all the accessories and clothes they wear (though too old for them) were around in the 90s. They probably chose 1999 to span the whole decade and to appeal to more ppl for nostalgia. I think they also did the Book it and Pizza Hut thing bc that was huge in the 90s. So many of us kids read and kept reading logs to get that pizza. I had the button and got stickers for it. I agree the clothes weren’t what 9 year olds were wearing at the time. More 11-14 year old look maybe. I was 12-13 in 1999 and the clothes Nicki wears are so nostalgic to me. I was a little tomboy back in the day.
I agree, from you describe the story sounds safe. Y2K fears, though, I feel are so forgotten. At the time they felt so real to so many ppl. I know there were those out there prepping like the end of times was coming. I wasn’t and neither was my family. I do know that even if you weren’t prepping you did wonder what would happen when 1999 was over. Just in the back of your mind.

I wish they had either done bunk beds (because most people with siblings in the 90s had them) or Reversible bedding so you could pick between the girls. I also hate the patterns they used on the PJs and bedding! I'll just save my money for two new dolls and find a 90s teddy bear instead.

They’re really giving me 7th or 8th graders. What normal 9 year old wears platforms? What normal 9 year old has bleached or dyed hair? The way they dress is like a young teen not an elementary school kid, especially because they have such individual styles that young kids rarely have.

This was a great review! I want to respond to a few outfit-related things, as someone who was around the age the twins are supposed to be in 1999: you're right about their outfits- no kid was dressing like this! This is more what teens (or maybe pre-teens with extremely open-minded parents lol) would have worn, and same with Nicki's highlights- cool, just not on a nine year old.
The whole Clueless vibe would have been sliiiiightly old fashioned by this time actually since it came out back in mid '95, but her Meet shirt and sweater being one piece was VERY on-brand for the early 2000s (I owned several in middle school- you rarely had separate pieces because the shirt would bunch up lol). Isabel would have dressed more like Annie in the Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap film or girlier characters in the later '90s Olsen twin movies.
I hate that they gave her the neon green Felicity eyes! I might have bought Isabel if not for that. She looks like Lizzie McGuire, although that show was more 2000s (but AG seems to have merged the two decades). Nicki's outfit is very cute but...eh. She probably would have been obsessed with the Disney movie Brink and not worn dresses at all.
Thanks so much for all your detailed videos! They really help with purchases!

Very surprised to hear they're actually 9 and not 13 like I thought. But that kind of brings home the fact that I felt the dolls looked and dressed a bit old. Just wondered if AG is trying to age up the look without actually aging up the dolls. No girls around that age would have been wearing that Cher-inspired outfit Maybe the Olsen Twins but they're celebs and I feel most average girls, fashion forward or not, would be wearing it. Also the Olsen Twins are the same age as I am and I was literally 13 in 1999. But as you said, totally not 90s, I don't know who AG is fooling. I also agree with you that Nicki has a lot of character (all about that versatility aspect too!) I do remember wanting streaks and I did get them but DEFINITELY not at 9! Unfortunately for me I like some aspects of these sets more than others (really not into the inflatable purple chair) and I can't as of right now justify buying the sets for just a couple of the other accessories that were included (but for the record I'd choose Nicki's bedroom accessories.)

The dolls being 9 is what American Girl has done for a very long time and then in the books they turn 10. Now with the lastest dolls released i believe were around 10-12. With Kavi being 12 and i believe the world by us dolls are also 12. American Girl has been making the dolls look a little bit older with the painted on eyelashes AG has a wide range of customers so i understand why their making the dolls look older because they have adults who also buy these dolls too

I got Nicki with her accessories, the pet set and of course the book it set. I usually get the pjs for my dolls but thought $28 was too much for a gown & slippers. On one hand it upsets me that book it/Pizza Hut is not an integral part of their story but as someone who fondly remembers the program/experience growing up in the 80s & 90s I had to get it and will get another when I get Isabel. I was really excited when the 90s were announced and like you said these sadly don’t really feel like the 90s. I think AG did a better job representing the 80s as a whole with Courtney and her collection. I’m also mad they reused names and agree they look much older than 9. Isabel’s attached sweater and shirt is absolutely accurate. That’s how they sold these back in the day, they were called ‘fooler’ tops because they fooled people into thinking you were wearing a shirt under a sweater or vest (well technically they didn’t fool anyone but that’s what they were called) it’s not laziness on AG’s part. I was young and just starting my career back then, and had several of those fooler tops in my wardrobe.
There were a couple of fashion labels that tried to bring them back last year, I’m not sure they were very successful at it. Fooler tops were popular for all of the 2000’s, they might have to wait a bit longer for the interest to come back lmao. 😅

There’s so much more to Asian American history than China Town and Chinese New Year. I mean 8% of the line are minorities and half of those girls are black which do have the right to be represented in the line but so do other ethnicities. There are way too many blonde girls in the historical line now and we really need some more diversity when it comes to ethnicity and hair color.

Book It was a big part of my childhood in the 90s. I think I’d rather find an older tennis set for Isabel. The PC set had a can of tennis balls! Isabel could’ve had a racquet bag, water bottle, sweatbands. They really cheated us out of a potentially good set. I want to get two of the skateboarding outfit instead as even girly Isabel would’ve had overalls. I do wish like everyone else that they had different names, so I’ll probably rename them. I agree that the tennis set and the skateboard set should have been separated and sold at a lower cost. That way people could buy the one they want or buy both and allow two children to play with them at the same time.
It would save a lot conflict between siblings or friends if they each had their own space to play while still talking! And if they can share and the buyer doesn’t want both, buy the one they will use.

Thanks for another great review! I like how you just tell it like it is! I also felt that they looked older than 9. When I first saw them on AG I thought they were looking like 12 years old and had to ask a friend who bought them if AG had decided to have them older. I was really surprised when she said they were 9. I'm very picky with the eyes of my dolls, so I'm glad you warned us about Isabel. Pity to see that we are again facing the "one eye bigger than the other". Makes it so difficult for me as I can't go to a store and Isabel is the one I'm after...As for the name, I will probably do a name change. Thanks again for sharing your opinion, your videos are very helpful! 😊

i HATE that they're 9 imo. I saw alot of people be excited that these dolls would be Jewish because they assumed they'd have a batmitzvah storyline (a ceremony for 12 year old girls, not 9). It feels like they missed an opportunity to really make these dolls more interesting because to me, they just feel like modern girlies.

I think you are a Social Influencer and your opinion carries weight.
Plus, your not wrong, names could've been more thought out. These dolls and their story was probably rushed and not fully supported by everyone on the board. Quality control is a big problem when peeling is a factor for a doll that is over $100+. Beautiful dolls, definitely a Niki fan over Isabel. Not a fan of Isabel's highlights...but love her eye color and face mold and face paint. Plus, Isabel's clothes are amazing! I prefer her clothes over Niki's. Thanks for the review.

My opinion is more of a question: Why did they make the next two Historical dolls blonde white girls?! Why not an Asian doll for once? Seriously only 35% of the historical dolls are minorities and half of that percentage is black (which there is absolutely nothing wrong with that) and the only Historical Asian doll we’ve ever gotten was just a side character in another doll’s books and her own doll was released in a side line that didn’t last very long and she only got one book and two outfits which is just depressing! Asians are just as much a part of American history as any other groups of people. There’s more to their contribution to US history than Chinese New Year’s or China Town.

  • @lnp102

This is the first time I've actually looked at these dolls and thought, you know, they're actually kind of cute. Isabel with her hair up like that and Nicki with her blonde pieces mostly hidden (because I don't like them). The Joss mold is one of my favorites, but I will stand by my utter dislike of those new Joss mold eyebrows. From far away, (like in this video) the faces look ok. But up close, all I see is LINES. Take Isabel, she's got all the spacing between each individual eyebrow hair, the top painted eyelashes, the bottom painted eyelashes, and then all the individual lines in her decal eyes. There's too many lines screaming at me! It makes her face look very busy and it's distracting from her natural Joss mold beauty!

one thing i dont get is AG released dolls that were supposed to be like 12-13 year olds before (world by us line) so its not like isabel and nicki would have been "too old" or anything. The fact that they made them elementary schoolers when they look like middle schoolers is so crazy lol

    @freyja6360 Před rokem +3

Thank you for that in-depth review and the fact that we can always count on your honest thoughts. It's difficult to find someone nowadays who can be fair and not either liking everything or hating most of it (but still buying it, like... why? "vote with your wallet").
I gotta politely disagree with you on a few things and I think that I can have a valuable opinion in this department, since I was 11 in 1999😉.
I don't think that they look too mature for their age. This is exactly what I was wearing when I was 8-12 at that time. I see nothing inappropriate or too mature in a plaid skirt, shirt and a vest. Cher looked mature in "Clueless" because she was played by an adult wearing designer clothes, that's all. In the same lane - people are overreacting a bit about the added eyelashes and are thinking of them as a make-up. Some people just have longer eyelashes. They're doing this because it makes the eyes "pop" more IMO. Oh, and that streaks in Nicky's hair are absolutely accurate. I was about 10 when my mom and aunt were dying their hair at home and they let me make a little streaks in my hair just like Nicky's. Only one of my teachers made a comment about it but I didn't care, nor did my mom. It was generally a time when people weren't talking as much about what a kid should and shouldn't do and what's appropriate for them (wild times..., I know😂).
The second thing is your issue with Isabel's meet outfit top and tennis dress. It's absolutely 100/100 accurate and not lazy. Clothes that were combined of the different types of fabric sewn together were all the rage back then. I was wearing tops like that meet outfit one all the time and liked them a lot. It was bringing it's own set of problems sometimes. I remember walking home with my mother when it started raining and she was wearing a dress of this kind - a crochet top with attached skirt made from some kind of light fabric - until we got home her maxi dress was barely covering her behind because it shrunk so badly😂. I'll agree with you that Isabel's tennis dress should be cheaper though.
I'm with you on the bed & bedding issue. It's extremely disrespectful to the customers and their wallets, especially nowadays when a lot of people are often in worse economic situation than a few years before.
I generally am in love with them, especially since Nicky is basically me at that age and Isabel - like my best friend from the elementary school. It's the first time when AG got me teary-eyed a bit, I gotta admit. Still, I think that it's way too soon. Not because I have an issue with being considered "historical" myself, I don't - I find it funny and a bit cool but because people's reviews are showing me that they aren't recognizing many of their trends because it wasn't talked about a lot in a historical context anywhere yet.

I enjoyed hearing your opinions! I filmed my thoughts on them a few hours ago, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of the piercing felicity eyes. But as a Caroline owner, I remember when her eyes were the hottest things for customs so I kind of enjoy her eyes being unique to her

I really don't like Isabelle's eyes. They're just way too bright. I want the Tamagotchi from her bedroom accessories set, but it's the only thing I like from the set, so paying $50 doesn't seem worth it.
I'm definitely thinking about getting the Book It! Pizza Hut set just because of nostalgia. I was a mid 80s/90s kid and I remember the Book It! program well. My brothers and I would read lots of books to get the certificate to get a free pizza. It was one of the few good memories I had from my childhood.

Lmao there’s no way little girls of 9 were dressing that way in 1999... Those are early/mid Noughties clothes.
In 1999 fashionable colors were dark tones such as navy, pine green, army green, burgundy, gray. Also people were not wearing miniskirts at that time, midi skirts and longer dresses were popular. It was a backlash against the very bright colors from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Also little girls didn’t wear heeled shoes like Isabel’s. Their fashions and the hair dye are giving tween 13-14 all the way.
If you want an accurate portrayal of a 1999 outfit, look no further than the GOT Urban Meet Outfit of 2000. The grays, navy, olive green purse with a burst of red in the reversible vest. The cut and colors of this outfit are just so perfectly fitting for the fashion of that time! And the chunky Mary Janes are exactly what a 10 year old girl would wear. They should have done a revival of the Urban Meet Outfit for this collection.

i honestly wish american girl did more historical dolls from the 18/1700s instead of things that are so recent, it feels like they are only doing it because they know itll make more money and not for its actual purpose of educating kids. in no way is 90/80s and even 70s considered "historical" to me. normally the historical dolls would be there to teach kids about a specific world event but it feels more like these ones focus on the "aesthetics" i just wish they would realise that so many young kids would be intrested in actually learning about history and not just have pink thrown in their face. also not a big fan of the whole complete opposite twin steryotype theyve got going on. love that they didnt make the exact same and that they can be opposites without hating each other but i do just feel like the whole "tom boy" and "girly girl" thing with twins is so overdone. feels like they did that for the sake of marketing as well.
