    This was my first appearance on Fool Us in July of 2011. I have since been on the show a total of three times. The premise of the show is to attempt to fool Penn and Teller. Penn and Teller have their own show called Penn & Teller Fool Us in Las Vegas where magicians go on the show to try and fool Penn and Teller. Illusionists Penn & Teller sit in the audience and watch as magicians try to impress them with a trick that the famous illusionists are unable to duplicate. If a magician successfully hoodwinks the legendary duo with a trick, be it a sleight-of-hand routine or a grand illusion, that person wins a trip to Las Vegas to perform as an opening act in Penn & Teller's show at the Rio Hotel & Casino.
    This video was originally on my channel with millions of views but due to a misunderstanding over my rights, CZcams removed it. They discovered the errors of their ways and said I could repost but by then others had done so and I felt no need to repost.
    I'm posting now to ensure there is a video record on my channel.
    I hope you enjoy my first appearance.

    The most important thing is how Penn was mesmerised that he just wanted to see the cards and fan them out for himself instead of the crowd. That there is the moment you know, Penn was really enjoying the trick and was a true spectator.

    My absolute favorite part of this trick isn't the trick itself. It's the look that Penn has when he takes his hand away and see the wrapped deck of playing cards. I have come back and watched this from time to time whenever I happen to be watching Fool Us.
    It is an absolute classic.
    It seems so simple and straightforward. There is very little flash and the patter feels very natural an unobtrusive. The sequence where you suggest outcomes to Penn, and his esxalating reactions to them, are just perfect.
    And, as you said to Wossy, most of it being in Penn's hands just puts it over the top.

    I was fortunate, when I was in my teens, to see Shawn Farquhar live. I was on a cruise and went to the theatre for an evening and was floored at his natural he comes across in every trick, great or small... and now I can never hear Sting's "Shape of My Heart" the same way again. He's really as personable, charming, and a stand-up all around guy, as he seems but one of the things I love best about him is his impeccable sense of timing and narrative as a showman. It's the reason I never tire of watching his videos and have been hoping to find time to take the family on a trip just to see him perform some of his greatest artistry.
    Shawn, best wishes to you and yours and I hope to see one of your shows in person before too long.

    • @TheGameCommentator
      @TheGameCommentator Před 8 měsíci

      The deck switch is actually him switching from a deck of cards to the brand new sealed deck with 1 joker card on top to make it look like a full deck or cards. The deck has a slit in the bottom for him to slide in the card, which he then covers back up somehow. Then it's placed into penns hand and he removes the top card.

    I keep coming back to this performance and each time I'm equally amazed.
    Years ago I happened to be the close up camera tech when Shawn performed his "shape of my heart" routine at a magic convention on a Norwegian cruise ship and even though I was only a few metres away with a high resolution camera I could understand how he could manipulate those cards so buttery smooth.
    When he pointed to his mouth at the end of the trick, I raised the camera for the final shot and I almost dropped a very expensive broadcast Sony cam because I couldn't believe what I was looking at.
    During the trick in this perormance above, you can see Penn is watching every move like a hawk and as he said at the end, he saw the deck switch but getting the signed card in the new deck was insane.
    There are only two possible scenarios - either Shawn has sold his soul in exchange for superhuman skills or, well actually that's all I have . . . .

    I remember seeing this trick years ago on Fool Us and was always obsessed with finding out how he did it. Even though I know many signed cards into sealed decks this one feels like it's the least clunky to perform and just looks the cleanest overall. All these years later and seeing this effect many times, I still don't understand how he got that card in the box that cleanly. Also, I still dont know how you made that selection look so free when it obviously had to have used a force. "Without spoiling too much." I know there is the "classic force" but for some reason I feel like that's not what he did. Shawn I love all your work in card magic and you are a easily one of the greatest magicians of our time. The craziest part about the trick for me was getting the 7 in place. If it was a classic piece of spreading, it would be comparatively simple, but I'm pretty sure it was not. Obviously you practiced alot with index cards as a kid since playing cards are too expensive, and even though I really have no idea, I know that the way you used the skills you learned as a kid with those index cards has to be the most creative way I've ever seen. I don't mean just getting it in, but getting it in place, although just getting it in was nuts as well.
