  • Part of developing independence in children with autism spectrum is learning how to solve problems. For children with autism, problem-solving can be difficult because problems can be over-stimulating and complex.
One way to help your students with autism learn more problem-solving skills is to incorporate specific activities into your instruction. Doing problem-solving activities repeatedly will help your students build an arsenal of strategies as well as a sense of confidence when it comes to solving problems.
When choosing activities for students with autism, it is always important to remember:
    1. Break down the activity into component parts.
    2. Minimise the expressive and receptive language you need for the activity.
    3. Scaffold any aspect of the activity where the child is getting stuck.
    4. Minimise anxiety and external stimulus when doing the activity.
