Omg!! I can finally relate to something my daughter has been doing since she was a toddler. Although her outbursts aren’t 6-8 times a day everyday anymore , There are still some says she will have 3-4 but a lot more harder and hurtful. Sometimes I feel like my family is falling apart ☹️

"Ignore the behavior that you want to decrease"
I keep hearing this piece of advice. However it seems to me that it completely overlooks a different way such a situation may develop.
What if the kid goes on and on without end, and starts to get physical with the parent, even going as far as hitting them, or brandishing with the hand as if to hit (which is equally as intimidating)? You tell the kid calmly to stop, he goes on, or he changes the type of aggression. Ofc you dont wanna hit them, that would solve nothing. So what do you do? It's really frustrating that I havent found a single video that adresses this.

A cold shower. But NOT HIGHLY cold. My mum did this for me to calm me down. It worked well.
You can also take away an object that the child really likes.
In any case you must talk to him with a strong and serious tone and look at him in the eyes when you scold him.

My son did this and he also had a mood disorder. You may want to research the Bipolar child.

When problem behavior escalates like that to aggression, you need more support than CZcams videos. Please seek out a highly skilled BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) or mental health professional.

@@miniskirt9738 Noooo. Please don't do that. This will cause worse behavior and long-term psychological issues. We can't stop anger by shocking a child to 'calm them down'. As others advised, if the behavior is that bad, you need one-on-one support.

@@dianar.6937 The cold shower I am talking about is not excessively cold, more like fresh. It doesn’t shock, it calms down. I had this done has a child once, it’s not traumatic.

Thank you for this. I will be honest that this is uncharted territory for myself and that this video had become the compass that will guide me to the relationship I strive for.

What do you do when they only go to time out by force? I have a 5yr old with ADHD and ODD. Thanks.

This is really hard for me... I highly believe that my son has ODD and he is ADHD. (hes only 5, November 2018) I have been working with my local Beacon light and early intervention programs. He has a mobile therapist and I have a woman from parents as teachers who was a TSS for 20 plus years who work with him and I. Im having a hard time finding what motivates or inspires him bc the only thing that seems to work is food. I don't like feeling like im training an animal while working on things with my child... Hes much better behaved when hes at home, but when hes at school he acts out towards the teachers. Hes never been physical towards other children, other than the occasional verbal confrontation over sharing etc. that are age appropriate. Hes been physically aggressive to teachers by trying to bite choke spit and swear, scream and throw tantrums at them. He has not had this behavior towards me. I don't know what to do about his behavior bc I feel like I have been about everywhere I can seeking help, and now I find myself in the corners of youtube seeking it..... He seems to get worse when there are other people around... like hes ok with me at home til I have a visitor or someone professional coming in. when other people show up its like he stops listening to me all together and all rules and boundaries go out the window literally... he can go from helping me out with his little brother and offering to put my plate in the sink etc. to wanting to climb on the furniture, go through droors, climb up on things to get stuff he normally ignores... I just wish that I could find something to help me with him other than always offering food or games as a reward. The only other thing that works is getting assertive and stern with my voice, there is no explaining things or talking things out with him bc his attention span seems very short. You can ask him questions like: what do you do when you are hungry? he will answer with: cereal, or toast for example. You ask: what do you do when youre tired? he will say im not tired. You can ask questions about say school for example and he will trail off and say things like look at the light, see the light? or something else completely off topic....
someone please help... im open to any advice!

Hi there! Sorry for the rough time you're experiencing. I'd really recommend seeking out someone who does solid, evidence-based practice and would help you do work like parent management training. You could look for a practitioner at www.findcbt.org/FAT/

How about instead of taking the ball away immediately tell where she can throw the ball instead and redirect the behavior to outside and go spend time with her and if she throws a tantrum you say “I see you are frustrated and you really want to play ball let’s go outside and play”

  • @Hannah-nc7cb

Let me make it clear I am not using time out I will use logical and natural consequences for each behavior obviously if it natural consequence I won’t interfere but let that run but I do time ins need to do more of that instead time outs are punitive
