The day Gordon Lightfoot passed, I listened to this song omw home from work. Cruising along in my truck, windows down after a hard day's work. I almost started crying, because it hit me how much I really loved this song and the fact that the man who wrote/sang it was gone forever. But then I realized his music will live forever, and I was feeling no pain.
RIP Mr Lightfoot. I loved listening to your albums as a teen. I was thrilled to attend your concert at the Fox Theatre in Tucson, AZ. I loved Edmund Fitzgerald most of all.
@@jamessullenriot Agree 100%. I listen the most to classic rock, but I also like a lot of other things. Out of everything, this is one of my all-time favorites.
Michael McLoughlin This song brings back memories, a lady named Tiffany-long ago. RIP Gordon-thanks for this song & all the memories your songs bring back.
It's May 4th and I just learned of the passing of Mr Lightfoot. I'm 61, so his music is in my wheelhouse and until I watched interviews and tributes ,that I realized what an incredible songwriter and musical genius he was. Thank you Gordon for sharing your talents with the world. Another Icon gone😢
On June 3rd 1973 I was watching McCloud on tv and this song was playing in the back ground, My Aunt came over and informed me that my Daddy had died of a heart attack. Ever since this has been one of my favorite songs. I was 13 years old , Gords Gold was the first album I ever bought.
You will be much missed! I was fortunate enough to have seen you three times. Loved your music from the first time I heard you on my little radio in the 60s!
Mr. Lightfoot’s music has been a big part of my life. He was there for me in High School through all my trials and then in the military. He has a way of touching your soul with his music, my two favs are Sundown and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. What an amazing talent but most important what a humble and good man. God Bless and long life to a generational icon Mr. Lightfoot
Aussie here..I discovered Gordon Lightfoot when a late friend gifted me a cassette titled Summertime Dream with "I think you will appreciate this Canadian Singer"..Gordon Lightfoot is my go too music ..Simply a sheer pleasure channelled through headphones or speakers..
To anyone that remembers the time before the internet knows this song brings back memories of a time that will never matched again. Mr. Lightfoot, I Salute sir you for bringing this song to life. This legendary song that helped shape a generation of us that lived in the 60's 70's 80's and 90's. This song has helped me get through a lot of hard times including the death of my mom whom I miss very much and my dad, but also gave me so many great memories of my youth as well.
A view from the recliner. We lost another great talented performer. So many greats in the business have gone before us. We have been blessed by all the great music. As you can see my name is Gordon and my C. B. handle is Lightfoot. Sounded good with all the police listening in!! Loved the name, the voice and the man. His music will live on.
Hey, I was just going through a Gordon Lightfoot phase recently. My dad (who worked on the boats in Lake Erie) said he knew some of the guys who died on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and he had the 45 of that song (he didn't own many records). Spookily, I kept hearing it or covers of it right after he died. Sundown, Carefree Highway some of my favorites. Makes me feel like an honorary Canadian!
The beauty, glory and mystery of north American nature with its mighty forests, vast lakes and wide blue sky are felt and vividly expressed by Gordon’s music and songs. He is nature’s ambassador , he is beauty’s messenger in its purest form.
@@cyninbend You have to understand, that this isn't the same man from 1974. Alcoholism and smoking really took a toll on his voice. Alcoholism plagued him up until '82, and he only quit smoking last year, and that's had quite a few repercussions for his singing. I acknowledge you might not like this version, but hey, I find it cool he's still doing what he loves, despite such drastic changes!
Gordon has got to be one of the top songwriters of all time without a doubt. God gave him talent I can only dream about. I thank God for putting Gordon and me on earth at the same time. I would have hated not having the joy of this amazing, amazing talent in my life. The best balladeer of all time. Gordon, you are a rock star. May God bless you my friend.
I love this guy. Great songwriter. In the early eighties I was in the Boy Scouts and we went to Canada. I was very young. 2 memories stand out among many great ones. While standing on the shore of one of the lakes, cannot remember which I thought this is not a lake it is an Ocean. 2 The scout leaders were all in a flurry around this one guy, taking pics, getting autographs, like school girls. I said what's going on? That guy is Gordon Lightfoot. Did not know the name or the songs they said. Wish I did. When one scout master died he was buried with a pic of him and Gordon. I looked and said OMG it was him. I just remember a kind , patient humble man strolling the shore like an ordinary guy. Man if I only knew. I could have gotten a pic and autograph. Was just too young. But technically I DID meet him. lol.
I'v loved this song since I was a teenager but never knew who sang it so many people had tried but Gordon lightfoot is the only one that can sing this song. Excellent thanx for posting it.

Saw him 6 years ago today, he was a shell of himself physically and vocally, but there he was, an absolute legend.

The use of this in the Blacklist TV show was a genius music supervisor move. As soon as I heard it I was like hell yes, my new favorite show.
Gordon was influential to my guitar playing. Thanks for the music. I just wish I could have seen you in concert (my regret).

Playing like this at age 75, Gordon Lightfoot, legendary Canadian songwriter, covered 100s of times by other artists, can ignore his critics...
Gordon is a Godsend. So much insight and talent. What a wonderful entertainer and storyteller. Love his music.

38 years later and he still aces it
Let's say this was a king. The ace went down in '74 ;)
Why the weird snippy way of singing? Creeps me out...think I'll stick with the original.
