There will never be another Gordon Lightfoot. He was truly an original. Unbelievable lyricist, incredible singer, and an exquisite human being. The world has suffered a terrible loss.

As with friends, I find it hard to say that so & so is THE BEST. My dog is my best friend. I have a few buddies that would be contenders for THE BEST, however, I feel that if designated 1 in particular as the best, it would slight the rest. Mr Lightfoot is certainly a legend, an outstanding singer/songwriter & well deserves a place in music history. He is, without a doubt, in the high rankings range. That's only my opinion & point of view, not intended to stir up controversy.
I heard the first strains of this flawless gem when I was 12 years old in 1970. The music seeped into my bloodstream and saturated my soul. It's been encoded in my DNA ever since ... Blessed to have grown up in that era.
I had the same intense experience with this song on a workman’s radio when I was 7 in 1970.. there was a funeral of a young boy in the Welsh chapel opposite our school, at playtime .. kids were watching silently, the tiny congregation overshadowed by giant stone angels… the world stopped right there. I tried to contain these intense feelings by fiddling with the bobbles on my jumper. I can only really appreciate the intense sad perfection of this song as an adult and like you, it suffused my very essence.
This is a rare and beautiful song about love that is over and the dispair felt by former lovers when they realize that the love is no longer there. I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back. Heartbreaking, I've been there.😢

I am a 1963 model, and this song brings out so many happy memories for me of what was a decent childhood. Carefree days, no viruses trying to kill us, no real issues other than the pub closing at 11pm..... Happy days indeed.....
Funny how music has changed so much over the years. I think it's a direct reflection of the society we live in that influences music so much. Things were way different back then. Born in 1966, I have seen a lot of changes and rarely can I say that any of it has been for the better. So sad for me really. But I don't think I'm alone in that sentiment. God bless you and yours.
I love what he's done to this song, whereas his daughter pointed out that her parents divorce was not one sided, and Mr Lightfoot took ownership of his failures, and changed the lyrics to acknowledge his part. May you rest in peace.
This man is brilliant poet and singer. His music is timeless, its as beautiful today as as it was when I first heard back in the sixties. He's Canada's Legend and I couldn't be more proud to him
I come back to this now knowing today's news of his passing. I live half an hour away from Gordon's hometown in Canada, they have a street named after him that I passed many times during my time in college. This news crushes the country, he was truly the greatest.

One of those rare songs where amazing lyrics come together with the perfect simple chords and picking to produce pure magic. Great metaphors and a universal story line.
35 years ago I was moving from Montreal to California taking a three month car drive trip with my soon to be wife. I was a Lightfoot fan since a couple of years and had purchased tickets to one of his concerts in Vancouver well in advance. Upon arrival in Vancouver I called home in Argentina and learned that my grandfather had passed two days ago. I was so sad and shocked and my wife convinced me to go to the concert anyway, which we did. It was a deeply touching experience, I was in tears during many of his songs. Now I keep that memory in my heart. We`re still married and had 4 beautiful daughters.

At 68 I always get emotional while listening to any of Gordon's songs. Just listen to the words. So true So calming. A story so beautifully told and wonderfully sung. What a great great story teller and performer.
I heard this song when I was just 8 years old in my relative’s car and this song absolutely transformed me. For the very first time I didn’t just hear a song on the radio, I experienced it to my bones. I cried as I understood the so very deep and poetic metaphors describing a tragedy of a love ending and the emptiness and pain because of that happening. The vocal delivery of those lyrics danced perfectly with the purity and rawness of the guitar and it was overwhelming... this song made me understand what true songwriters are. They are crafters of art for your soul. I have shown my kids this song and they are mesmerized. This is true talent on a very high yet understated level. It is all that is right with music.
mick60 alas many Canadians , including myself , wouldn’t ever think that. I love Gord. I love my American friends, and have enjoyed working there three different times in three different states. But I’m most definitely glad Canada is a separate country with a distinctly different culture. Never have I felt more strongly, seeing how bad things are going in the USA now. Sadly.
What a beautiful song , a timeless classic in every sense - Gordon Lightfoot still singing with tremendous feeling & meaning- an absolute gem of a Tune - I LIVE IT 💙👏👏👏
HI From Ireland asked a guy 30s playing acoustic gig in a bar where I live if he knew Jordon Lightfoot ..if you read my mind...didn't think he knew it..he played it as I'm he knew it all his life....I ask if they request a song to be played...timeless song...
I was to Casino Rama in Ontario Canada Near Gordons town to see Chris Kristofferson a couple weeks ago and to the audiences surprise Gordon did a walk on and sang Maggie May with Chris. What an honor to hear Our Canadian Folk singer doing it still. Got to love this man for his life and music...Feb 2017
An unspeakable tragedy. This man, along with Bob Dylan, has guided me towards my most intimate music. What an incredible sense of loss. Happy that I saw him on tour 6 years ago. At the top of my greatest performers. RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
Gordon Lightfoot, one of the greatest folksingers. I grew up listening to his music, one of my favorites is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald...I like how he honored the men with his song, great voice.
One of the best songs written by Gordon Lightfoot! You will never be forgotten ❤️😢👍👍😭😪 ! Your songs were beautiful to listen too ! Thank you so much for your music and songs 🙏!
We will truly miss your music your words, your personality. Thank you for all that you’ve given all of us during your lifetime. Bless you and your family.❤
Brings Tears..!!! No One has ever touched the Heart like Gordon Lightfoot.. So Blessed to have been at The Cellar Door in DC many times when he was there.....
This song always touches me ever since I first heard it back in the 80s. One of the greatest songs ever written. Rest in peace Mr Gordon Lightfoot and thank you for your poetry and music.
Kevin Elliott; Even though he wrote this what, a half century ago ??? I don't know how tears don't flow down his cheeks. Man, talk about reaching deep down into one's self. I often wonder what happened to him and what she looked like for him to put these feelings down on paper and then transpose into that beautiful music. God, just the violins alone give me chills. Music is such a gift given to mankind. PEACE from Philadelphia.
This is still one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my whole life. It just touches the heart and what an artist who can bring out these lyrics and music. You just wish this song was written for you and while I write this, tears are running down my face and I remember my husband who is gone now for almost 7 years. He died by the age of 48, surprisingly in the night. Even though I'm a nurse I wasn't able to help him. I still miss him so much we shared so many things. We also shared this song 🌹 We dreamed of sitting on a bench when we're old on the lake holding hands and listen to the nature and sometimes to our special music, like this song. It was just a dream, but we loved it. And you all where ever you are keep on dreaming, it's worth it, whatever happens to you.... 💋 Much of love for you all and cherish what you have, keep it because sometimes life is shorter than you think ❤️❤️❤️you all take care, greetings from Germany 🙋🏻♀️🧚♀️💌 And thank you Mr. Lightfoot for bringing such joy in my life with your special music, I will never forget 🎶❤️🎶
So touching. Always felt this song referenced an old Abbott and Costello movie that had Melody who died in a well. Made me cry when I was 10 y.o. So does your story of the love you share with your husband. Till you meet again, ( and I believe you will).
My new girlfriend is a huge fan as am.I. She has every album/single of his that she could find. She concert ticket stubs from 35 concerts. Yup, she is a keeper
He still delivers this song with feeling and melody. Many other artists who emerged from the 1960's have become embarrassing figures in concert. Bob Dylan comes to mind. There must be something in the water supply in Canada. You have this man , Leonard Cohen, The McGarrigle sisters and their Progeny , Joni Mitchell, Most of The Band, Neil Young ,Oscar Peterson and many more from Canada.
What a heartbreaking song ughhh 😢 this is such a human song. Ughhh we love so hard and then fall out of love and we do feel bad about it but it’s our truth and we have to live our lives. So sad. This is beautiful poetry
His musical output was very special. I kind of communed with him when listening, because his lyrics were well composed, very personal and sensitive. Also knowing his handling of the usage of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I realize what a caring and considerate individual he was in protecting the families of the victims of that tragedy. You don't always learn that about performers and the music they write.
We love you Mr. Lightfoot. Our Canadian treasure! You are So beautiful and a soundtrack of all of our lives. Your Canada Day performance was classic! Thank you.
"If You Could Read My Mind" If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see If I could read your mind, love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstores sell When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just too hard to take I'd walk away like a movie star Who gets burned in a three-way script Enter number two A movie queen to play the scene Of bringing all the good things out in me But for now love, let's be real I never thought I could act this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old-time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet But stories always end And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand The feelings that you lack I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
He changed the words to, "the feelings that we lack." His daughter talked to him about it. She didn't think that he should make his ex the only one to lack feelings. He agreed.

Gordon Lightfoot is a national treasure. How can you not love his songs?
This took a genius mind to write.
As we sit by the camp fire at our cottage solace.....awesome
Absolutely!
I'm blown away by your love, you are loved as well. kindly message me privately on Hangouts:gordonlightfoot.connects@gmail.com
You will not be forgotten. Thank you for your gifts of songs to this world. Peace be with you.
a great Canadian singer but we love him in the u.s
in korea!
@mick60 not sayin that if music was to have borders the world would be a sad place...
@mick60 and the UK , anyone that can fingerpick needs to know this song ,
mick60 alas many Canadians , including myself , wouldn’t ever think that. I love Gord. I love my American friends, and have enjoyed working there three different times in three different states. But I’m most definitely glad Canada is a separate country with a distinctly different culture. Never have I felt more strongly, seeing how bad things are going in the USA now. Sadly.
guess what ?! Canada IS a country... NOT a state... never will be a STATE... have some RESPECT mick60... cheers
one of the saddest, most beautiful songs ever written.
RIP And thanks for leaving us with all your great songs
Rest in peace, Gord. Thanks for the music. 🎶
RIP to one of the best. Loved your music my whole life. So glad my dad introduced me to you when I was just a kid. What a life.

Worked at a hospital in 1974 and cal!ed the request line until they played this song, met my wife there too
RIP 😢 Gordon Lightfoot. Legend!
Live long and break free... sail high Gordon
That would have been awesome to see!
An unspeakable tragedy. This man, along with Bob Dylan, has guided me towards my most intimate music. What an incredible sense of loss. Happy that I saw him on tour 6 years ago. At the top of my greatest performers. RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
Growing up in the seventies this was the music of life. Summer camp long rides down country roads love this man memories forever 🌹🌹❤️🙏🙏🙏
Dare I say one of the best songs ever written period

What an amazing wordsmith.
@Gordon Lightfoot that's right Gordo
This song always touches me ever since I first heard it back in the 80s. One of the greatest songs ever written. Rest in peace Mr Gordon Lightfoot and thank you for your poetry and music.
Certainly one of the best songs in all of history👍👍👍Beautiful

Thank you Sir for all you did and for your talent Rest in Peace Mr. Gordon.
The beauty of this era of music will never be surpassed in my opinion. What a beautiful song with lots of memories of childhood.
❤️
I can only imagine the flood of emotions and memories that flow through him while performing this. If you play and sing, you get it🙌
Kevin Elliott; Even though he wrote this what, a half century ago ??? I don't know how tears don't flow down his cheeks. Man, talk about reaching deep down into one's self. I often wonder what happened to him and what she looked like for him to put these feelings down on paper and then transpose into that beautiful music. God, just the violins alone give me chills. Music is such a gift given to mankind.
PEACE from Philadelphia.
Yes. Commonly known as, a musicians musician
Probably the greatest song of all time...
Much of love for you all and cherish what you have, keep it because sometimes life is shorter than you think ❤️❤️❤️you all take care, greetings from Germany 🙋🏻♀️🧚♀️💌
And thank you Mr. Lightfoot for bringing such joy in my life with your special music, I will never forget 🎶❤️🎶
❤️❤️❤️
So touching. Always felt this song referenced an old Abbott and Costello movie that had Melody who died in a well. Made me cry when I was 10 y.o. So does your story of the love you share with your husband. Till you meet again, ( and I believe you will).
SO BEAUTIFUL...the lyrics always make me cry when I hear him sing this.
That has always been a favorite song of mine, and he still performs so beautifully. God bless his soul.
Magnificent song, a real troubadour, one of the best songwriters.
Jesus, a song like no other. What writing: "A castle dark or a fortress strong . . ." And the brilliant chord changes.
U coudnt say it the other way round it just woudnt sound right
Imean in a dark castle
Must be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Might well be one of the greatest songs ever written. The poetry. The rhythm. The constant movement. ❤️
Amazing guitars and a song that will never be sung the same without Gordon Lightfoot singing it!
Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
My new girlfriend is a huge fan as am.I. She has every album/single of his that she could find.
She concert ticket stubs from 35 concerts.
Yup, she is a keeper
35 years …… Impressive!! ✅✅
Rest in Peace, Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks for the music and the memories.
Heartfelt song. Love it. His voice is perfect 🤩
I always wanted someone to say to me what you said in your song. Then I realized, you just did. Thank you!! Love you, Gordon.
Check your mail
Wasn’t able to send you stuff. Was returned
One of the greatest songwriters.
Thank you.
"If You Could Read My Mind"
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take
I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three-way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
Thank you for doing this
❤️❤️❤️
Wow thank you! I could watch while sing along 🌷
Thank you, Friend!
He changed the words to, "the feelings that we lack." His daughter talked to him about it. She didn't think that he should make his ex the only one to lack feelings. He agreed.
God broke the mould!. Love Gordon. A true Canadian!!
