Hey brother, watching this in 2023. Just bought my home a year and a half ago and propane is killing me financially. Just bought a kerosene heater and am totally new to this. Super super helpful and realistically probably a life saver. Thank you for this informative video. Still help people like me 11 years later.

@@helenfisler-parker9005 you'll get used to it. I usually light my heater outside and then bring it in once it gets going. Make sure your wick isn't turned up to high. Some people put a little water in a pot and set it on top the heater.

Hey Craig...I used to use a kerosene heater every winter when I lived in Pennsylvania for like 8 years- loved them!...It really comes in handy and helps cut heating costs big time in comparison with electric prices. The best thing to do in my experience , is to fill it up outside, and also light it outside so it "burns off" the initial kerosene on the wick, and the smell wont linger in your home as well....great video bud ^5

Thank you! We use this every evening, but my husband is always the one who gets it started. Well, he's not here tonight and it's freezing! I just read the entire owners manual, but they made the process so dang complicated that I ended up feeling even less comfortable trying to start it than I did before reading them. Lol. Thank goodness for you tube! This video was exactly what I needed! Simple, easy to follow and thorough. Honestly, the manufacturers should put a link to this video directly on the heating unit instead of their own useless website. Lol.

We just were expecting a huge snow fall. My brother called to have me get ready with the heater. I told him NO, I'd rather freeze to death than try that thing. BUT your video changed my mind ENTIRELY!! It gave me the confidence to try it. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am using it right now. It is working just as you said. This unit works very well czcams.com/users/postUgkxl2o1MQU4aMgmFk_cMqer4nH2ptpDEM6h Considering the price I paid for this, I didn't have high expectations, but now after using it, I consider this is a well designed heater. Do be aware that doing the dry burn on the wick as recommended (or at least every two tanks) is absolutely necessary to avoid an unclean burn, fortunately it's easy enough to do. I'm burning dyed K1 kerosene and do a dry burn every two tanks and this is working great. This unit will heat a little over the 500 square feet that it is rated for depending on the temperature. On days it isn't bitter cold this heater will do a fair amount more. This makes an excellent emergency heat source, and also in my situation, it is a little more efficient than the electric heat in the teen temps and below.

For anyone who anticipates using one of these at some point in your life, this is 15 minutes well spent. Here's a couple of ideas that will make your wife happier: (1) some Big Box stores offer a liquid substance (in small bottles) that you can mix in with the kerosene to make it smell better - some places offer several different fragrances, and (2) when you light it, do it outdoors, let it set for a little bit, like he says, then bring it inside. When you turn it off, turn it off outdoors, and bring it in a few minutes later.

Your tip on lighting and extinguishing the heater outside is true as can be from my experience. I ran one of these things for years in a cabin, Whenever we would show up in the pick up truck with 1st thing we do is pull the heater out on the tailgate and fire it up. By time we had the truck unpacked the heater was up to temperature than we would carry it inside.

thanks for the reply. There are state regulations with using kerosene heaters inside the home. Massachusetts is one of them, doesn't allow them indoors. I am not sure about NY, NJ and CT but $20 for 2.5 gallons means $8 a gallon for kerosene which is about double the price of gas. I've read that these kerosene heaters last about 12 hrs per full tank which is 1.9 gallons. I guess it depends on how cold it is and how big your house is to know how often the heater needs to be used.

I live in Alabama, on the Gulf of Mexico. If temperatures dip far below freezing, there will be a couple deaths, the elderly, even then. I had wondered what people do in the Northern states after a Winter Blizzard knocks out power for days at a time. Not everyone has a fireplace or wood burning stove. It is scary to think that you and your family could freeze to death during those times. This kerosene heater is a very good option. -Liked-

It is now the end of April and I was wondering how to store my Kerosun for the winter. I am now confident that I don't have to burn off the little remaining kerosene and will just cover for dust and store in my garage. Thanks very much for the peace of mind knowing how to handle this issue.

We haven't used our heater for 10 years. This video was a good refresher in how to use our DuraHeat (which is just like Craig's). We didn't constantly adjust ours for the first 10 minutes, so we had noticeable initial fumes. Craig's advice solved this problem. Thanks, Buddy!

Memorex88 here. I've had a kerosene heater for over 20 years now and it saved us during the 1998 ice storm which left us with no power or heat for 2 weeks! It's true that the kerosene stays stable for many years as I had to clean years of dust off the unit but it lit up and burned no problem with the years old fluid that was in there.
Glad I own one, just in case!

I bought one because of Sandy. I was lucky, many communities around me lost power for weeks, I didn't. If I had, my family would have been cold! Now I don't have to worry. Surprised at how much heat it put out! It will heat my WHOLE 2 story house, no problem! I can even cook on top, if I had to. I find I prefer it over my oil furnace.

Thank you Mr. Craig you to man! Your explanation was very simplistic and very helpful. I am one of those persons who have a 1K kerosene only Donna glow that’s been in my basement for 12 years and the only time that it has been fired up as when I let someone use it in 2009 when we head to Kentucky I storm. And now that we are anticipating another ice storm I have it fired up in my garage and the flame is just like you say and I’m ready to use it if needed tomorrow. So thank you very much Craig take care

Good explanation of how to use this kind of heater. I had to laugh when you talked at the beginning about the power outage in 2003. We're in upper NY state, had just replaced our old fuse box with circuit breakers and had the electric company come out to reconnect the line. They did....and tested it....no power. Then the technician got on his cell phone to find out what was going on. I heard him say "what? all of this area? what? the whole northeast...what, Canada, too????" I thought we were the "straw that broke the camel's back" one too many demands on the power lines!!!!! Funny memory.

I use to heat my house with one for eleven years, I had no other heat source, they are safe and it didn't effect my health at all that I know of. I bought it for five dollars at the salvation army, almost brand new, man what a deal that was. It worked so good that it kept us nice and warm even when the temperature got down to -0°farenheit. One thing you must do periodically is take them out on the porch to let them burn out completely, let them run out(burn out) completely dry of fuel. Because what happens after burning them for a couple of weeks or so, maybe a little longer, I don't remember, is, they will get some build up on the wick from the fuel and they won't burn so nice and bright anymore and they will put out some fumes. That's a very important thing to keep in mind. If you've never used one before and decide to heat your home with one for a while you will see what I'm talking about. After it's burned out completely and cooled down, fill it up again and with the wick completely turn down(retracted) let it soak for at least an hour or so before reigniting. Very important thing to remember, very important. After you reignite it, the flame will burn nice and bright and hot just like a brand new wick. I dont think I had to change the wick more than two or three times in that eleven years, that I remember anyways. Please note, don't ever try to light a dry wick, one with out any fuel in the tank. Letting them burn out completely won't hurt your wick one bit, it's actually necessary when it builds up with crud, but trying to light a dry one will be a big mistake, you will probably need to replace your wick, I'm sure of it.

I dry burn once a week and use a toothbrush to get rid of any build up on the wick. Make sure the wick is not charged or hard.

Best video yet. I have the same unit and haven’t been using it right. I suspect the wick is carboned up and as a result is not dropping when extinguished. I should ad that it is IMPORTANT to let the tank empty and burn itself out, this will burn the wick hot a keep it clean.
