  • I purchased a DuraHeat kerosene heater today to help warm up the house this winter. We use propane heat throughout the house and it can get pretty expensive. I figure we can use this to offset that a bit!
You can get this same model from Home Depot for $139, or save $10 and grab from amazon here:
DuraHeat 23,800 BTU Kerosene Heater: amzn.to/2ZsntOT
Thanks for watching - hope you enjoyed it!

I grew up with and have had Kerosene heat ever since I was in grade school. Now that I have a home of my own, I purchased a Dyna-Glo 10,000BTU radiant heater. My mom still has our vintage Crestline at her home and it still works great today (actually better than these newer models). I use my Kerosene heater in the evenings when watching TV for about 4 hours. It has saved me 40 to 60 dollars on my electric bill per month (includes cost of kerosene). I am lucky though. Kerosene here is $3.69/gal at my local gas station and is water clear 1-K. I do a dry burn outside on a calm day after about 5 gallons of kerosene burned to keep the wick clean and the odor down. Good fuel, proper fresh air balance, flame height and maintenance of heater will reward you with an efficient clean warm heat. Cracking a window is a must in my home to keep air quality good because my house is fairly air tight. But even with a window open 2 or 3 inches, my heater heats my home to 75 degrees before bed. My heat pump doesn't have to come on until 1 or 2 AM from 6PM. I run it from around 6 to 10PM.....so not bad. I go through roughly 1 gallon of Kerosene every 3 to 5 days. They are excellent for backup heat and supplemental heat. You likely would not want to sleep with it going over night because they really should be monitored. Have I fallen asleep with them going. Yes. They are very efficient but like anything that burns petroleum, they do emit CO and are unvented devices. A CO detector isn't a bad idea just in case. With common sense you can save a great deal of money without safety concerns. I like my Kerosene heater but I really Love the savings. It's also nice to have something to go up to and get instant warmth. Something a heat pump can't do.

I had a cape cod style house here in NY . It had oil heat . I used a Kero-Sun heater the same size as yours to heat the entire house for a couple of winters. It easily kept the house t-shirt warm and even threw out a nice comforting glow . Was very useful during power outages. I still use it for emergancy in my ranch home about 5 miles away from my first home. Kerosene lamps are also a great emergency lighting choice. I’m even looking into the Perfection kerosene kitchen stove. Edit: just for reference houses were (are)1000 and 1300 sq’

Mr. HomeOwner ,,, just a few safety tips. Please do not refill while it is on. Don’t use a funnel to refill ; use one of those squeeze bulb syphon (sp?) type fillers. And lastly always have fire extinguishers in a couple of easily accessible places .

Once you heat up a room you can turn this down to very very low setting and it will crank heat!!! The better quality kerosene the less smell you will have. I've
found I tend to get a bit of smell regardless when I first light it up.... but after that it burns very clean. This is a Godsend for when power goes out and these
units last for many many years. If you live in a cold winter environment where power outages happen, you will find these indispensable. We had a major ice
storm here some years back and went without power for 14 days.... so plan ahead as once disaster hits you won't be able to beg, barrow, or steal one of these.

I bought three of these since my boiler died.
Some things to be mindful of...
    1. Crack open a window! I leave mine open about 1/2"(13mm) minimum in room where it is being used.
    2. Always check that it is turned off! I hit the button and you can hear mechanism react. Yet, the wick doesn't retract enough to extinguish flame. Often I have to wind it up and hit reset again. Then turn knob manually ccw to lower wick to lowest setting. This happens to my older and newest one.
Definitely want let it burn off outside. Fumes are horrible at that last stage, perhaps last 30 minutes of burn time.

One thing I noticed was the burner was loose in the box. I lined it back up so the little spring lifter and window were located near the window on the front of the cabinet. I then filled it with kerosene. The igniter would not lite it, so I lit it with one of my grill lighters. I had accidentally over filled the fuel tank, so I siphoned off about a quart of kerosene. I never got the igniter to work. Actually, the igniter button does not lift the burner, so I can see the wick. I am sure it is something simple but something is wrong with this unit. After I corrected the overfill situation, I got the flame under control and it seemed to run correctly. Before then, it smoked black soot, like a worn out diesel truck. In cold climates it would keep you toasty. Warmer climes maybe too warm.

Have you compared pump kerosene versus store container as far as smell goes?

    • @RobsBackyardBBQ

I haven't yet.. I did buy a new blue kerosene can, but so far all I can find is the red pump fuel. There's a station that sells clear k-1 kerosene about 30 minutes from here though and it's $3.50/gal. I'm thinking of buying some more 5 gallon cans and head over there though. i've read that the pump k1 is as good as pre-packaged k1, but the red can gum up the wicks quicker.

If the inside portion isn't seated properly, it may act this way. The manual mentions to move the coiled handle inside unit from side to side to ensure that it is seated. It should move easily. If there is any resistance or if flame is too large, it isn't seated properly.

Not a heater this size. It would turn your van into an oven. Look for something much smaller.

2300 BTU or 23,000 BTU? 2300 would barely heat a bedroom.

  • @forestman2382

It's alot more trouble than people think it is. The bottled kerosene is extremely expensive and the bulk kerosene sold in hardware stores if it is old, will ruin the wick, also the kerosine there is often contaminated with moisture and that would ruin the wick also and replacing the wick is a ordeal for any one who's not a handyman or engineer.
Plus every week the instruction manual says you need to dry burn the wick ,which is a difficult and complicated and long process , . It's almost a part time job doing all the maintenance required plus I did not find the instruction manual to be easy to understand .
I don't recommend it at all except for emergencies. It's more trouble than it's worth.

Obviously, you havent used one very long. They are VERY low maintenance. Super easy to use and put out a tremendous amount of heat. The wick can be changed in about 15 minutes.

      @lynncrum Před 7 měsíci

I have two of this exact heaters, The wicks can be purchased at almost any hardware store, even Walmart. It takes about 15-20 minutes to replace the wick. Super simple.
