  • The Good and the Beautiful is being talked about everywhere, especially their language arts programs! I had heard such great things about their ELA programs that I was SUPER excited when they came out with the high-school level. With my 9th grader, English, or Language Arts, has been the subject that we've struggled with the most when it comes to finding a good match but so far we are LOVING The Good and the Beautiful! Today I am sharing how the program works, my review of it and a walk-thru of some of the units and some of my daughter's completed work from the program. I truly hope this video is helpful and I answered any questions you have but if not, feel free to ask or check out The Good and the Beautiful's website for more information: www.jennyphillips.com/good-bea...

    We have a similar story. I have a young man who did school but never truly loved it until we found TGTB! We used it last year and it was a game changer for all four of my kids. I'm so thankful for this curriculum in our homeschool. I found your video today because we are starting our first year of high school...it's a little different, and I'm making sure I have it under control.

It's definitely something I can make in the future though. For now, I'm just trying to keep as many records as I can to make transcript writing easier.

    I can’t wait to get there! My daughter is a sophomore at 15, but we started a couple months ago at Level 4 so we could do some remedial grammar work and just because we love the great books and language arts in general. We have almost finished it, and Level 5 is waiting on the shelf. I get myself an extra course book, too! I am studying freelance writing so it’s actually been helpful! 😊 I think you are the first to review the HS. It looks amazing. Looking forward to it!

    • @AmyReindl
      @AmyReindl Před 5 lety +2

      Brenda Paxton not at all! The thing about TG&TB is that grammar rules and other basics kind of start over in every level, but move faster and then add more information. The first five levels are free, so you can download and look at all of them. I read through the first three myself, and printed off worksheets from 1 to 3 related to editing and sentence diagramming. Level 4 is the one that becomes more independent for the student, and begins to focus on writing more than the previous levels. It really just depends on your child, and where they are academically with LA. TG&TB is great for remedial work. My daughter just sets the timer for 30 minutes and gets done what she can in that time. We will likely increase the time a bit each level. Plus, she mastered the grammar and geography cards in just two weeks. They are supposed to be spread out over Levels 4 to 7, so we will just revisit those when we start Level 5 soon. We plan to do every level and unit study available until she graduates, and we hope to do them all together as long as our budget allows. I’m learning a lot, so is she, and the stories are so good! Your son could start right into high school and just move at his pace. We chose to start earlier because we wanted to. It’s not necessary. You could do some remedial work as needed with just the first five free levels. Good luck with whatever you choose!

    This review and the one by Colleen (Our Blessed Life) is seriously making me consider buying TG&TB high school already even if I'm not even officially homeschooling my daughter yet in Kindergarten. 😄 I'm worried profanity-free books and curriculums would be harder to come by as this world is getting crazier by the minute. 😐

I absolutely despised all the homework they had when they were in school and they did as well. It was a chore to get them to do it. I find homeschooling much easier than homework ha. We school "year-round". So we take 1 work off a month Jan thru Oct. We are finished by Thanksgiving and have all of December off as well. Then in Jan our new school year starts. It is much more relaxing for all of us than when they went to a school. We are 6 years in and I have a third child in school as well now.

    I love that TgTb takes out cursing in their books---never heard of that...that's amazing. We are SO far away from high school levels but this is encouraging. So, with 10 units per year, does each unit take about 2-3 weeks typically? I've heard that the lower level LA program takes a long time for each lesson. Thanks for the insights. Thanks for this because next year my daughter will be in 9th. Curious, what is the writing instruction like? I don’t feel some of it was clear in level 6 when we tried to use it. How much of it is writing instruction? Obviously that’s a huge part in language arts I’m just curious if I will need to supplement. • @aplacetonest
      @aplacetonest  Před 5 lety

      There is a book assigned to each unit, sometimes more than one unit, and they tell you what chapters need to be read for each unit. Then, it's up to you as the teacher to assign your student a certain number of pages or chapters each week to complete the required chapters. Does that make sense?

    HELP, please!!. so my daughter is technically going to be a 9th grader, I am currently looking to order her materials for the upcoming school year...my dilemma is if I should get the HS 1 kit, but I feel that there might be gaps in her grammar usage and mechanics. I just don't want her to have big gaps. I'm afraid to just start her in the HS 1 and it being so overwhelming for her because she might feel as if she might be missing something. Does she do a few pages a day, bounce around in the book or do them in order? Does she do the geography and latin cards every day or only do them certain days. I don't have a schedule for it because I pretty much let her make her own schedule. Yes, she bounced around in the book which drove me nuts! lol I believe they are supposed to work on their geography cards and word cards a little bit each day. They give you a basic schedule of what to complete each day if you want to finish the program in a certain number of weeks but we really didn't follow that. I didn't tell her what to do each day and my only rule was that she finished each unit in 2 weeks.

    • @aplacetonest
      @aplacetonest  Před 5 lety +1

      Well, they're two totally different things. IEW is very structured and repetitive but it does give A LOT of writing instruction. Almost too much which is why we stopped using it. I found that IEW was stifling her writing because she was having to "follow" so many procedures. TGATB does offer some writing instruction but possibly not enough for a child that has no natural writing ability at all. For us, it worked perfectly becasue my daughter was a decent writer but she still needed a lot polishing of her skills. Check out the sample grammar and writing guide to see what skills it covers: www.jennyphillips.com/course/highschool/ Now, this is only my experience with the high school program from TGATB. I haven't used their lower levels so I can't speak to that. I hope this was helpful! :)

      do you have any updates on how the curriculum is going for you now? Thanks!
      We have used some lower levels but just this year switched to using IEW for writing … so we finished out our TGTB LA and trying to decide if we want to do the IEW with the TGTB and just use IRW writing instead - but still get all the goodness of TGTB for high school. Do you think it would be doable to use TGTB high school 1 with OEW for the writing portion?

    :) your so young :) you could be a student.
    I don't feel so bad now looking like my daughters twin. Maybe because now my daughter and I are the same size its so odd to have a high school teen. Not sure if it makes me feel old or young. Feel old keeping up with teens but feel young considering I'm not even 35 yet.
