  • Since their inception in 1925, Hawthorn have become a powerhouse of the AFL. But it was not always like that. This video explores the humble beginnings of Hawthorn in the VFL and later the AFL and the people that helped make Hawthorn one of, if not, the most successful club in the AFL today.

@Gav Mackie man if so then it happens. We haven’t won a spoon since I’ve been around so that’s a fair while. Rebuild no problems for me, I’ve been around and watched 12 flags so I’ve got patience. Cats are last years winners but it’s going to get ugly real soon looking through that profile. A decade of topping up will bite hard in the end, just as it did to hawthorn after a 3 peat. That was 6 years of topping up. Eventually it ends with the base falls apart and there’s nothing to hold the candles and decorations anymore. Geelong have 12 over 32s. Stewart Cameron are at peak but are 30. Guthrie is 31. There’s a lot of great players about to finish Selwood is a legend and is fine. Hawkins Danger Smith aren’t your average players. You know that I’m sure. Blicavs 32 Stanley 32 I’m not going through them all but you look at their ages. Toohey ect. Hawks are young and if we are going to keep up with Sydney Freo Dogs Blues Lions in the coming years, then take the hit now and keep building young talent. Then you top up as the window arrives. As long as you have that core of quality youngsters you’ll be right for a long time. Cats will be in serious trouble in 12 months but I guess you are smart enough to know this.

Great mini doco, missing the 3 pear era and Clarkson era, but I don’t think that story has been finished yet, I can see premiership success this decade. As good as Clarkson was he really did some damage towards the end of his tenure, disposing of club greats to opposition clubs and recruiting free agents that weren’t as good and dismissed the draft. The torch has been passed now but will be interesting to see what Mitchell can do.

Hawthorn is the most successful club from 1960 onwards. Keep in mind that Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon especially, had a 28 year headstart on Hawthorn including premierships. Our great club is great, but we cannot accept being mediocre at any stage. As for the accusations against Alistair Clarkson and Chris Fagan, they are totally unsubstantiated and were melodramaed by the ABC and 9 Media Group especially. Nothing has come of it, these men vehemently denied these accusations from players who didn't make the grade at Hawthorn. Phil Egan, the so called investigator, has now been charged with defrauding Aboriginal organisations in Northern Victoria. The club will return to bigger and better things...we have to pick up a big bodied back and another key forward...I believe we are close to having the mid size talent maybe another there too, but time will tell.

So it's true since hawk's joined a new league that has become 18 team with 18 clubs to win just one cup is very hard ? 3 in a row is simply a team far superior to all others! Having to beat other power clubs in cats and swans! Tigers didn't have other power clubs to overcome neither did Melbourne or cats this year! The only reason tigers Dees and cats have won flags is because hawk's got to old! That 3peat team would thrash tigers dees and cats! After loosing the best key forward in modern history buddy we won 2 more flags both by over 10 goals!
Simply the best! 80s team played 7 grand finals in a row then another to make it 8 winning 5! Then you have 60s and 70s! If this does not show who the true most successful club since a full league was built! 9 teams is not a competition! It's a local sport! Now it's national!

Give us a break. If you are going to be selective about which premierships matter and what clubs beat lesser competition, let's look at the reality.Hawthorn was a basket case. The club came within a centimetre of being absorbed by Melbourne. The on field performance was so bad, the Hawks received a number of first and early draft picks.Next came a stroke of incredible good fortune. Gold Coast and GWS joined the league and were allocated a big slice of the first round draft pool for several years. This meant none of the other sixteen clubs were able to pick up top ten players, thus handicapping fifteen of those clubs and giving Hawthorn a massive advantage in player personnel, because, due to their time at the bottom, had been able to fill up with top quality picks

If you are good enough to win you’ll win. Hawks 91 beat eagles over there to set it up and cats couldn’t beat eagles anywhere in finals. Crows beat saints and north so what does that mean ? Cats lost to Freo in Geelong. It’s very simple, if you are good enough you’ll win anywhere anytime.

@@stevenprice6957 My point is home ground advantage is a thing. If Hawks had played any of those GF elsewhere I believe they would have only have 2 Premierships for that era. If two teams are similar in list and form, the away team normally has to play twice as good to win.

@@stevenprice6957 and yea the fact Lions won three in a row at the G makes their team the GOAT.

@@jlrob85 didn’t hawthorn win a prelim in WA against Freo after having to go there twice and then reversed it on the eagles when the hawks had no break and the eagles were fresh? Old team hot day eagles were favourites. Swans won in 2012 and hawks beat them after being underdogs in 2014 and smashing them. Freo was meant to be too good for hawthorn in 2013 after everyone watched freos pressure in the prelim., didn’t Geelong lose a home prelim to Freo at Cat land. How many home finals have Port lost in 23 years, ? So Richmond who beat the giants and crows are true winners ? They beat Geelong in a short season short matches so don’t they deserve anything? If you are good enough you’ll win. Eagles beat Collingwood so did Brisbane twice so what does that make Collingwood? Totally useless. Hawks played in 4 in a row and won 3 in a row. That’s amazing. I still call Brisbane the best team of this century winning 3 in a row and never finished top. Cats haven’t won back to back but have been great over a period. Not great in finals to be truthful. I cannot see them winning one for a long time just with their profile of over 32s. Nothing lasts forever. Tigers are no threat despite the media hype. There’s a new wave coming in the names of Melbourne who have already won one, Brisbane who have a younger amazing list swans who because of academy rules will always rebuild quicker than anyone. Carlton have the best spine that hasn’t hit prime yet, Dogs Freo are great young lists. Back to home ground. Eagles showed if you are good enough you’ll win. They’ve done it 4 times. Swans twice. Lions 3 times crows twice. So In 30 years it’s been done 12 times which is 40%. That’s not a bad ratio at all. 8 interstate teams 10 Victorian so chance are they will make it a lot and if good enough will win even against a Collingwood supporter base or Essendon or whoever. How do you know what would have happened elsewhere ? They’ve won twice in big WA finals and were the first team to win interstate in 91 v the eagles. If crows were good enough they beat Richmond, they didn’t they choked and tigers were hungry. Dogs v giants over there did the job after beating eagles over there. Anywhere anytime like Ross Lyon said against the cats at Kardinia. They kick straight early against hawthorn and it could have been different. Gunstan nailed his goals from anywhere and Fyfe and others didn’t. Brisbane beat Melbourne last year and so did Sydney. Swans won interstate plenty of times in finals. If you get on top 4 you are a chance and you need to take your chances.

@@jlrob85 I’m my mind of this century they are the goat. 2 in a row is tough, 3 in a row is incredible. Mathews took a team of super talented kids and taught them a simple style of no frills finals football. Lions were nowhere in 2001 after Essendon had lost something like 2 games in 18 months. He made his team believe when he said of it bleeds we can kill it, they bled they killed it. Amazing stuff. Voss to me is one of the greatest player captains ever. So brutal and when it counted bang he did things then and there. Brown lappin Aker they played great finals football. Never finished first but that simple game plan of go forward at all costs anyway you can, proved to be great. Tigers did things year later that were similar with fast forward football. Cats probably missed a flag or more by having a flawed style for finals. I agree Brisbane hawthorn Geelong Richmond Sydney Eagles in that order this century.
