Eric: How America’s Reflection Shines in One Man’s Redemption | Philosophy Analysis

The heroes journey is a classic tale of storytelling, but in Eric, we see how the arc of redemption for a character that was bad but becomes good is even more interesting. Eric is the story of a young man who leaves home to escape his difficult family situation and abusive father. The story follows his parents Vincent and Cassie as they struggle to find and bring him home. Vincent, becoming dependent on alcohol and drugs begins to believe that by creating the puppet that Edgar has designed for the show and putting it on the air, Edgar will come home. The puppet, Eric, is a metaphor for the darkness of the city, the darkness that lives within Vincent and the pain of their relationship. The struggle to find Edgar starts Vincent's redemption arc, the internal and external process of him accepting that he was a bad father. Vincent is a bit like America these days, but much like Vincent, America can also pull itself together. Eric is the story of redemption, hope and healing. The idea that bad people, institutions and governments can be good again. The story of redemption runs parallel to the story of resilience, but both are about the process of trying, failing, trying again and never giving up. As Vincent searches for Edgar, we see the tale of another missing young man, Marlon Rochelle and how institutional racism impedes his mother’s ability to find him. These stories act as a metaphor for America, how, after being a terrible country, we, just like Vincent and others in the show, have the capacity to become better. We see how Vincent, the local government, the cops and even our nation have the capacity to do better, to be redeemed after being awful in the story of Eric.
