  • It's June 17th, and we've been doing Birmingham all week ... except for one station, and that''s Bordesley. It gets one service a day on a Saturday only, at 1,36pm - and we had to catch it!
    ROUTE: Bordesley to Birmingham Moor Street

    originally in old aerial photography it had 3 island platforms of which only 2 remain and one stub loner platform for services changing lines. one of the three no longer used viaducts remains mostly intact albeit with all of the bridges of the roads removed. The underplatform walkway to the remaining disused platform exists but is sealed. The site outline of the station house is visible still in Google Earth Pro.

    I remember Bordesley in the 1980s- It was quite busy at rush hour. Since then all the local factories closed or we relocated. There is very little housing in the area. Go there when Birmingham are playing - you get packed platforms - that's only about 25 times a year though!

    This is crazy! I have caught the express bus from the Airport several times and they always announce ‘Bordsley Station’ next stop when you approach, I would be pretty cheesed off if I got off the bus to catch the train and couldn’t get in and therefore on a train! Perhaps WMT need to announce ‘Bordsley Ghost Station’. The stupid thing is it’s at the top of Digbeth High Street near the Custard Factory and Irish Centre and the Mayor is talking about extending the Tram system down There at a cost of millions. Use what you have Mr Mayor and the area of vibrancy could extend this far

    Don't know whether the makers of this video are aware that this station will be obliterated in the next ten years. Two chords are due to be constructed to enable trains on the Camp Hill line to access Moor Street, and they will converge on top of Bordesley station, which will either disappear altogether or be relocated. This is one of a package of schemes linked to the arrival of HS2, due in 2026.
    The good news is that this scheme will deliver new stations on long-closed sites at Hazelwell, Kings Heath, Moseley, Fort Parkway and Castle Bromwich.

    • @NaysonRatcliffe
      @NaysonRatcliffe Před 7 lety +11

      Bordesley wasn't built to serve St Andrews, it just happens to be the nearest station. The matchday service exists but it's not a scheduled service as football fixtures are somewhat fluid and can't be published in a fixed timetable so all the football trains are "additional" services. The station still needs a scheduled service. It's a line I know particularly well and I think it's a prime example of station usage figures being inaccurate too. I'd think the station usage figures here (12-13k a year) are massively underreported as you just need to see the place on a matchday to know it's more than a few hundred people per game using the station. Thing is it's difficult to police against ticketless travel at a station like Bordesley so loads of people using it will not have tickets or if they do have a ticket it might be one to "Birmingham Stations" rather than Bordesley itself.
      Also as the station is barely a 15 minute walk from Moor Street and 20 from New street with no nearby residential population (it's industrial one side and a bucketload of pubs and shops on the other) there is little demand for a more frequent service as people passing through tend to use the big stations in the city centre.

    • @mittfh
      @mittfh Před 7 lety +4

      Interestingly, in days gone by, it was far busier - originally opened as two platform two track, it was upgraded to four tracks and two island platforms in 1915, with extensive sidings adjacent to it (on the viaduct!) to handle cattle arriving for the Bull Ring markets. In the 1960s it was downgraded again.

    • @NaysonRatcliffe
      @NaysonRatcliffe Před 7 lety

      freshpickings so Birmingham has become star of the show. Let me tell you, from the past year crime rate has risen by 11% and the threat of an attack on Birmingham. The transport there gets mad and the airport traffic system is ridiculous. I'd rather live in Manchester and we all know that's not the best either. Also, Birmingham is undergoing a lot of roadworks lately. The motorway is becoming more and more busier. I like Birmingham for its business. Oh and Birmingham gets quite dirty up in the northern area - some at the centre.

      The original Moor Street station (the terminus) has been thoroughly revamped by Chiltern - they've even redecorated the 1980s cross-city platforms (adjacent to the tunnel) in the same style.
      It's such a contrast to Birmingham city centre's two other extant stations - Snow Hill and New Street - both rebuilt in the 1960s and buried under tons of concrete.
