    The braille says "This staircase is equivalent to a 15 story building"

    The braille says " Stairs to overbridge"

    • @VeryWetPaint
      @VeryWetPaint Před 7 lety +55

      Not quite.
      The Braille text on the handrail was SUPPOSED to be "⠎⠞⠁⠊⠗⠎ ⠞⠕ ⠕⠧⠑⠗⠃⠗⠊⠙⠛⠑" which would mean "stairs to overbridge"
      There weren't any transcription errors in the dots, unlike most Braille signs in the USA. And it's really really basic Braille too, so it SHOULD HAVE BEEN readable by even a beginning Braille reader.
      BUT unfortunately someone installed it upside down, so it's rather illegible. From the stairway-side it actually reads "⠢⠶⠦⠔⠺⠰⠺⠢⠹⠪ ⠪⠳ ⠜⠺⠔⠠⠞⠜" which says "engg?inw⠰wenthow owt arwenTar". (Yes, it's really longer upside down, and there's an uppercase T in there.)

    • @WouterWeggelaar
      @WouterWeggelaar Před 7 lety +9

      I did flip my paper to decipher it, yes, but I did not know if it made a difference.
      Interesting error!

    • @matthewsmatters
      @matthewsmatters Před 7 lety +8

      Yes indeed the Braille is the wrong way round. Flipping the image 90 degrees anticlockwise puts it the right way up, meaning to read this with my finger correctly I would have to be standing in that small gap between the rail and the wall! Also, if it were placed the opposite way round, the beginning of the line would be closer to the platform, in exactly the place where a Braille user's hand might find it and then naturally read along, without need to perform an acrobatic act. Maybe some Braille users are better with it than me, or maybe we can call this another literary error at Cambridge North.

      Has anyone told the train company, so they can fix the sign?

    • @simontay4851
      @simontay4851 Před 6 lety +3

      They wouldn't bother fixing it. I bet most braile users wouldnt even use it anyway even if it was the right way round because the stairs are obviously for the bridge.

    I've not actually checked, but at over 1000 bike spaces I think the Cambridge North bike park might be the second largest in the country- the largest being at Cambridge with ~2700 (it was 2677 when I helped audit it, but the configuration has changed a bit)

    • @amykalton6673

    Used this station two days ago. Can now walk to my companies office there rather than take a taxi - which needs expensing - from regular Cambridge. Tidy station. The 0814 I got from Kings X separated carriage 1-4 from 5-12 at Cambridge before going to Cambridge North. Service back at 1638 only stopped at Cambridge before Kings X. Fast service. :)

    I've only stood on the platform there as I was in a passing train. I was with my grandma and she got off there to go home with my aunt who lives closer to Cambridge north than Cambridge main station. I continued on to Cambridge because I'm closer to the main station. There's a new bike path that's opened up from around the back of the station, which goes directly past where my mum used to live on a dead end in Chesterton. Can't imagine the dead end is so quiet now! We considered going there a couple of days after it opened for the sake of it, but decided it wasn't worth it to go out of our way to get a longer train journey to London

  • @mittfh
    @mittfh Před 7 lety +1

    When you get to the Coventry area, there's a fairly new station (not quite as young as Cambridge North!) at the Ricoh Arena - but courtesy of the rail operator not having sufficient rolling stock, it gets served by a single DMU (75 passengers) every hour, and is closed for several hours surrounding matches at the stadium. Oops.
    Meanwhile, no stopping along the Leamington to Coventry line, but en-route there's a station currently in the process of reincarnation: Kenilworth, closed and demolished following Beeching, is now being rebuilt (albeit a couple of hundred metres to the South on what was originally the goods yard).

    Another tiny correction: you're right great Northern go to Kings X and Greater Anglia go to Liverpool Street, but Great Northern do express and stopping trains to Kings X, whereas greater Anglia only do fairly slow trains to Liverpool Street. Unfortunately, cross country don't stop at Cambridge North at all yet - very annoying for getting to Peterborough!

    • @Ciaran100
      @Ciaran100 Před 7 lety +2

      I don't think cross country will ever stop at Cambridge north as their trains are extremely overcrowded and frequently formed of 2 coaches.

    • @multiplio2924
      @multiplio2924 Před 7 lety

      Ciaran 100 Hopefully they'll get some HSTs to fix that...

    • @Ciaran100
      @Ciaran100 Před 7 lety +1

      Are you a bit confused? Cross country don't and will never operate HST's on the Birmingham - Leicester - Cambridge - Stansted airport line.

    • @multiplio2924
      @multiplio2924 Před 7 lety

      Ciaran 100 Well they could - the already have HSTs elsewhere, and could shorten them to fit on the current platforms just to provide extra capacity alongside the current turbostars

    • @Ciaran100
      @Ciaran100 Před 7 lety +1

      And what is going to happen on those routes that have HST's on them? The 1603 , 1703 and 1803 from Birmingham towards Derby are full and standing with a 7/8 coach HST! And you want to provide less than that 0-o

  • @ianmcclavin
    @ianmcclavin Před 7 lety +1

    I've noticed that most of the Kings Lynn trains don't stop at Cambridge North (there is one south early afternoon though that stops there instead of Waterbeach). Hardly any stop at both Waterbeach AND Cambridge North, (though there are one or two that do in the peaks). There's a notice up at Cambridge Station therefore saying that passengers can travel between Waterbeach and Cambridge North via Cambridge at no extra charge, but NOT via Ely!!

  • @Joe90V
    @Joe90V Před 6 lety +5

    You'd think they'd be able, after all the examples in Europe, to design a building where you can also wait for buses without having to go outside into the weather & perch on sloping metal.
    Where you can also take shelter on the platform from the wind & be able to sit while you wait.
    You'd think they could provide a door adjacent to the cycle park or a cover to shelter from the weather.
    Maybe a seating area to wait for someone to arrive - oh yes that's outside.
    The car parking area is massive & perfect for travellers to set up a camp. Already happened twice.
    The cycle lane crosses the pedestrian footway twice & then vanishes into a shared path, completely unnecessarily.
    The proposed shops that will lead to the cycle path being scrapped could have been integrated into the station so you can shop while you wait.
    But no, in this country if you use public transport expect to be treated as a second class citizen. New station? Utterly disappointing.

    Geoff. You say in the video that Cambridge North is the newest station (correct at time of going to press). But where I wonder is Britain's, and I'm guessing the world's, oldest station still in use today. I did think it might be Edge Hill in Liverpool, but I seem to remember reading that the current station replaced the original one when the line was opened down to Liverpool Lime Street. Still wouldn't be surprised if it was on the Manchester-Liverpool Line

      I agree. It would mean catching the one, weekly train from Denton to Stalybridge, and alighting at Guide Bridge. Then take a train to Manchester Piccadilly, then a train from Piccadilly to Stockport. You would then have to wait until the NEXT Friday, to catch the one train per week, from Stockport to Reddish South! A total journey time (by train) of 7 days! This has to be a record??

      Dave Dave I've not looked on the map, but being local to the area, it would be about a 30 min walk perhaps ?

      Singingbanana is an alias belonged to James Grime, a mathematician who made a video explaining the exterior design of Cambridge North station. That video was mentioned by Geoff in this video.
