Chad Smith is the ultimate LISTENING drummer. He's been in the game for a VERY long time. He understands how to listen to the band for changes and interpret when the intensity is going to change, or the song is going into a bridge. He's the ultimate "grab that guy from the opening band because our drummer just broke his leg and we can trust him to figure it out" drummer.

There is no such thing as “understanding how to listen”, music is mathematics. Either you know it, or you don’t. Clearly you are not a musician. Yes he is a good drummer. But as far as his understanding for musical structure goes - any musician can do this.

God level drumming. What usually happens (every other time) is that the guest drummer will listen to the track (without drums) all the way through and make notes on time signature, structure, pacing, and then take a pass. Dude listened to 15 seconds and laid down a drum line that is, in my opinion, superior to the original.

@@larryshair You know, I'd bet that he has heard this song at least once before in his life. It's in the same genre Chad listens to. This song is one of the bands most popular with 500+ million streams. He also knows that Jared Leto and his brother are members. Nonetheless, it's still mad impressive.
It's not in the genre that he listens to, he says as much at the end, not in his wheelhouse, and you can also tell that he doesn't know the song because if you actually watch closely when the song changes to the different parts, the look on his face changes a little when he adjusts just slightly behind the song. He might have heard it on the radio in passing and not paid any attention, but he's certainly never thought to put drums to it. He's just incredibly experienced and has played so much that once he realised it was in three, that he could fit something to that pretty easily. It's his bread and butter.

As a drummer you know when key changes are and builds … You feel it… especially someone like Chad Smith, his musicality is unreal
Yeah definitely. He's helped as well here in that it's a fairly straightforward song structure - verse, chorus, verse, chorus, middle 8... Chad's spent most of his career jamming with RHCP so he's going to notice the little tells better than anyone. Still impressive though how he got the beat pretty much spot on for most of it.
So fascinating to watch him ebb and flow with the unseen changes. Remarkable...

ya ive been saying this since it first came out... play enough drums and you'll start to be able to recognize when changes are coming just based on the measure counts... most of the time its 8 or 12 bars then starts over again. you can feel them coming. its hard to explain to non drummers.
Not really just for drummers, I think anyone who listens to a lot of music get that feeling. Though simultaneously playing an instrument as you follow along a song you don't know or aren't familiar with is a whole nother level of skill. But for someone who's been drumming for as long as he has, I imagine it's as natural as breathing.
You can tell around the 8:00 mark that he wasn’t expecting that extra few bars at the end of the breakdown, you can see it in his face. He was ready to go right into the chorus and he built up to that at the end of the breakdown, but he heard that it was a few bars of space before the last chorus and covered up immediately. Literally changed things up within one beat of one bar and made it make sense.

Without jumping back in there, I think that was where you could tell he started building a little early…started opening up the high hat and then you heard him close it back down for a measure or two and then open it back up again. Listening, reacting, adjusting and improvising in real time. Just trying to wrap my mind around how many hours it takes to become instinctual like that is crazy.
This dude has played with arguably two of the most talented and unique musicians of the last 30 years in John and Flee. Not to mention RHCP is the band who has kept funk rooted in their music and has kept groove at the forefront. I was a massive skater/emo kid so no diss, but any pop-punk rock from the 2000’s is child’s play for a musician like Chad for him to figure out. The builds and the breaks are not subtle. It’s incredibly impressive, but that’s just how good musicians from the RCHP are.

Having been a fan of Chad's work for decades, I'm not personally surprised but also recognize how insanely tough it has to be to lay drums over the top of a song that's already been made and get it nearly flawless.
Dude, Chad is a talented drummer. He's been killing it for years but I'm glad this very talented drummer finally gets his recognition.
After watching this Drumeo video, I went back to revisit another Drumeo masterpiece done a month earlier, "The Genius of Chad Smith." True to form, Chad consistently knows precisely when to recede, allowing the singer and other instruments to shine. This has now catapulted him to the ranks of my all-time favorite drummers, alongside legends like Karen Carpenter, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkings and Zac Farro in my books. What's even more astonishing is Chad's ability to deliver this impeccable performance in a single take, while most drummers typically require multiple attempts, often after studying the drumless track extensively. Chad did it in one take! Drumeo has once again outdone themselves with this video.

The reason why he know where the song is going is 1. He is a seasoned drummer, 2. All songs have a structure so he knows the types well is quick
That’s a drummer that doesn’t just understand drumming, but music production etc. how a song will be put together. He’s a drummer who loves jamming.
Honestly, if you look at how he’s playing, there are at least 2 or 3 sections where you can see that he’s not sure where the song is going and he waits a split second before deciding what he’s gonna play; half of the times he nails it, the other half he corrects himself: but since he’s always keeping the flow you have the impression of a seamless rendition of the song. And this is as good as it gets for a first attempt: you cannot play anything like this without tons of experience and without a lot of musicality …he’s good

Heard a story about that time when Chad was auditioning as RHCP drummer. Flea and John intentionally went slow then speeds up at certain parts of the song, wanting Chad to mess up. Chad nailed each cue perfectly. That says a lot about how sharp his instincts were then and how this video shows how sharper it became throughout the years.

when you're good at the drums, it's easy to guess what a song with a structure and style like this is going to do. I can do it, obviously not as well as Chad has shown he can, but it's not surprising how well he got through this song, he's just that good. However, this was extremely great to watch, very very impressive.

This song seems to follow 8 bars before a progression change. I think a lot of songs follow this formula. Whether or not this is what he was doing. The guitars on the final bars tend to have a very telling passage way. I used to drum myself but he certainly nailed just about every transition.
As a musician when you understand song structures and styles, you can easily feel and hear when parts break from choruses, verses, bridges, breaks. We did this all the time at my church with all the musicians I had hired in my music department. Great improvisation.
Chad smith is without question one of the greatest drummers of all time. One of the coolest, smoothest, groove in the pocket drummers to ever play. The man could literally play with anyone and would make them better. HOF for a reason 🙌🏾

Your question about Chad knowing in between the breaks and coming out have to do with him reading the song structure. As your listening, you can hear surges and dips in volume and dynamics for him to interpret.

I have watched the original video at least thirty times and it is by far my favorite. My favorite part is the very beginning where he automatically goes straight into it after less than Thirty seconds of hearing it like a boss.
I think that I must have watched this 100 times already. Each time, I just shake my head in wonder.
Chad knows musical theory cause hes not a soundcloud rapper...and thats how you know how to easier transition for bridge to chorus to verse, etc. etc.
Man, if you play drums your whole life, you know the structure of the songs, and you definitely can count. Do that's how he knows when one part ends and another starts.

Easier said than done. You can see how the song can make dramatic tonal shifts like in the breakdown. You also don’t always know how many bars each part will take so he’s listening to the vocalist and anticipating to hit accents. Of course you could always play it safe and do a straight beat with zero fills and accents but where would the fun be in that?
Chad at this age has 33 yrs experience honing his craft. Starting with the RHCP he's jammed with the greats of GenX and Baby Boomers before. His "wheelhouse" is enormous. This is not surprising, it's expected.
If you see a musician wearing a band t-shirt. You can guarantee 100% they are not, and have never been in that band
Even though I know the song it's one of those that you know but it just gets supressed in your memory. And it's very up down up down like most songs but what helps in Chad's case is the vocals and guitar come up and down at the same moments when the drum would and he's playing a VERY fast game of catch up in some parts.

Chad is just following vocals yes but mostly the bass line which you can’t hear in this video Chad is infamous for knowing how the song roles based on the bass but that’s when he knows to slow or speed up or drop it like it’s hot

He knows because some of moderns pop music is formulaic and I’m sure he’s played session for many bands and knows common construction.

To answer your question how did he know? He is anticipating or predicting where it goes base on the music and the vocals. It’s like seeing dark clouds in the sky and predicting it will rain. It doesn’t always come true but you have a good prediction. In fact, he was not always correct. He’s on the dot when predicting the song will intensify but he did not predict when the music goes to a break. He sometimes expect the intensity of the song stays or goes up but it’s not. But he quickly and seamlessly adapted when he realized it’s not by hearing the music playing through.

Something to point out is that most of the drummers they have doing this listen through the drumless track at least once to work out the structure and style and then come in with their own drum arrangement over the top of it. Many of them actually write down a plan when they hear it.
Obviously Chad is on another level and just went straight into it on the first listen, no notes. That really is something special and I think that's probably why this one is getting so much attention.
Jared and Shannon have also seen it and did a little quick reaction clip when it came out. I'm hoping they put out a longer reaction, it would be cool to see them talk about it.
I think Chad is just one of the most talented drummers in the world and with the years he's put in he can combine his knowledge of musical technicality and commercial styles with his skills to be able to predict what comes when, and it has to be said that Shannon Leto is a very skilled drummer too so they obviously built the original song in a way that would be most appealing to the audience. It's not a band like Tool, where the musicality is so otherworldly you couldn't possibly predict it.
I would recommend checking out the original song and music video. I'd seen 30 Seconds live years ago at a festival but I wasn't into Emo, I didn't give them much time to impress me. But when I watched this Drumeo vid a couple of days ago I went to watch the music video and its really something else. I'm kind of annoyed that I didn't listen to this song ten years ago lol

Its basic song structure. U can actually see him miss the first 1,2,3 of the sets of four that structures the song often..like when he misses the first roll. But people think he knows the song, theres clear indicators he doesnt. Hes just awesome at what he does..listening to rises and falls of the vocalist, people don't t realise a drummer will follow the feel of the singer more than the actual song, that obviously structures the beat but in terms of intensity hes listening to the singers intensity. Hes awesome.

Except he didn’t listen to it before playing like the other drummers have done. He jumped in it after trying to establish the time signature and determining what drum pattern he wanted as the base. This is very much like jazz jamming.

A lot of it comes down to improving with other musicians, but typically in a freestyle or improv situation, the other musicians in the group will lead you in a certain direction with small details that a non musician typically won't pick up on. Most of the time it's the guitar player. I have enough experience to where I could "jam" with another musician and non musicians would think we have played together before. It also takes an understanding of how song structures work. That being said, he nailed it. Totally digging this video.
We saw them last October. My girls favorite band. Epic show in Chicago. And Chad came out and said fuckin A Chicago. We were rocking all night. Was great to watch him just go at it

He’s very smart
If you watch, he goes to the ride first for every transition because it’s the most flexible. When a part like the post 2nd chorus calls for it, he stays on the bell. If the part doesn’t call for it, he gets off of it.
Very smart approach for songs in that genre that you’re unfamiliar with.

Chad may not be the fastest or flashiest drummer but this video speaks volumes about his skills as a professional
Chad is a free jam drummer. He has incredible feel and is listening for patterns and key changes triggering movement in the song. You can see he doesn't always know where it's going to go, but he feels the change coming. He quickly adapts to the feel of the measure and plays through it.

Chad is well known for his creativity and going with the vocals of a song. I’m suspect that he hasn’t heard it before lol but from what I’ve read and know of him he’s very much a listen and play type drummer anyways.
Side note: the lead singer on that song also has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor
His musicianship is unparalleled! There's definitely something to be said for experience over education. I've seen a lot of highly skilled and trained drummers with years of formal education that couldn't match Chad's ability to know a song's structure like this. This is the epitome of drumming prowess!
I'd actually say most of the others in this series were 'educated' drummers. It was mechanical, but precise, process, listen, take notes, do a take, fix, try again. This on the other hand is what music is meant to be, when it isn't treated like a science.

I am so stoked this video and reactions to it have gone viral. Being from the midwest and SE, I never connected with the Cali vibe and was never tight with RHCP music. I love the song and saw this video within an hour or two of it going up and was just in awe of Chad's musicianship. I thought he was the only drummer to just jump in and nail it, but apparently Sugarfoot also does once. That Shannon Leto is a talented drummer just makes it more bonkers! Just genius-level musicianship and so awe-inspiring!

This is "active listening". He's hearing the dynamics and strumming patterns of the guitars and the vocal staccato and legato to make informed decisions about the proper drumming dynamics to match the song. He's certainly not doing it "perfectly". When he's unsure about the transition from one phrase to another you can tell he needs a couple of quarter notes before he can get back in there with competence (just look at his entry point). But still, a brilliant job. His subconscious has probably heard this groove before, but he's still clearly actively listening and adapting. You make a good point about knowing the makeup and anatomy of songs. Probably helps a LOT.
Chad has been in a band for decades and knows how to interpret the energy and flow of songs just because of the amount of experience he has. So I honestly don't think it is crazy that he was feeling the ebs and flows of the song as he was playing it. You can clearly see he has never heard the song with some of the corrections he made towards the end. And his version is definitely a different take on the song. The drums to this song aren't anything super technical to begin with, once he figured out that the song with a 3 count, he was able to come up with something on the fly. You can also follow by hearing the guitar swells during some of the parts that are coming back into the chorus as a queue. Alot of songs in this genre go by a similar song structure that it in the type of music he plays. So given all that, I don't think it was very surprising he was able to guess alot of the changes in pace and energy. Chad and the rest of RHCP are amazing musicians, some of the best in rock music in general. Althought I have never been a fan of their band, I can admit that every one of those dudes is a legend. I just can't stand Anthony Kiedis' voice lol

Yes! Chad Smith gave this song a heart transplant. They may have played it at the grocery store. Or maybe it came over the radio a few times. But it never registered as something listenable for its own sake. Now you people who have bonded with the original and have good memories associated with that are on another footing. But as a casual listener, these kind of improvs or doing your own take on a song puts it out there again with some new flavors. Like, some people like their avocado with cheese. Others might like it again with some hot peppers. This guy added some hot pepper sauce. So, enjoy. And the original is still out there to enjoy also.
