    I’m not a drummer but my son was. He never played professionally but was in local bands and learned by ear. He just knew what to play. Eventually he got into more of the technical side of things with editing and mastering songs for no pay just to get the word out. Unfortunately he passed away but it was fun to talk with him about music and drums. He fascinated me. I only wish that he had been able to make his music dreams come true. I think he would have been like Chad, just being able to pick up the sticks and play. I love to watch and listen to your assessments of drummers. Yeah. Think that often gets overlooked about this performance. If he was just playing by ear to what he is listening to, he'd not be able to set anything up in advance - which he clearly does. So basically what he has to do is think some seconds in advance about what will be coming up judging from the song structure etc. That can be best noticed close to the end, where he seems to have been expecting something different (less quit ending). On all the other parts however he's mostly correct with what he is assuming to come up.

    • @tiapesi2738
      @tiapesi2738 Před 28 dny +1

      except if he would have played tool and went in, he couldn't. Predictable musicstructure is often but not always a thing. Let's stay in the Emo/Punk Genre: Greenday's 'Jesus of Suburbia' also vreaks those rules. Which in my opinion is such a beautifull thing when it happenes. But you are absolutely right. Most songst follow a certain structure, only the tempo changes a pop songg lets take fourth and a typical emo/punk song in threes. So, usually the instinct doesn't lead you astray, but it could. Is what I want to say here. What is more important to highlight in Chad's performance here anf even more important (because every musicion knows how a simple song is construction) is how beautiffully he afampts in a change he didn't see coming. He does it with such easy that it neatly blends seemlessly and in my opinion that id what makes this pergormance absolutely SPECTACULAR!

    Many of the Drumeo clips the guest drummer listens to a complete (or nearly complete) pass of the song. They often make notes and map out verses and chorus, builds and dips and bridges....etc. Chad listened and jumped in playing literally a few bars into the first pass and just improvised in real time. Even though this isn't an especially complicated song, the improvisation is excellent - he did such an amazing job!

  • @tactrix1h

    He's amazing, and here's what people don't understand. He didn't listen to "15 seconds" and then do this, he listened to JUST THE SONG WITH NO DRUMS! His entire playing was built on his experience of how he would personally play it. So anything he missed is because he has never heard the song before and had no frame of reference for the drum parts.

    The smallest detail but so impressive in a way is that he instantly recognises when the the 2nd of half of that verse is starting to build-up back into the 2nd chorus begins & looses up the hi-hat @ 4:46 (Just as Shannon does in the original track). A true musician/performer to pick up on small nuances like that. 👌

I am the house band drummer for a weekly local open mic and get called on to play with a local artist that's trying out a new song or a song I'm not familiar with. This video from Chad is inspirational to see him just go full throttle into a song he doesn't know.

    Chad Smith has a video talking about ghosting the bass being his style haha so your bang on, it’s on drumeo. And he plays with his whole body and I think that’s part of it, I even see his face playing drum and I love it. Saw the chilli peppers on their stadium Arcadian tour and they did all their old hits and the whole new album with a massive oncore. They put on an epic show and each one of them is epic in their own right.

    The biggest difference between Chad Smith and other drummers that have done these videos for drumeo, is that they all listen to the whole drumless track and take notes. He was listening to the drumless track and started playing. They even asked if he wanted to do another first take. Chad is also heavily influenced by John Bonham, and Neil Peart, that's where the bass drum ghost notes come from

    This video series highlights how good many musicians are, especially studio musicians. To be able to write parts and play them on the fly, under pressure, is a mark of exceedingly high skill. My hat is off to anyone who does this sort of thing for a living. Obviously Chad is not a studio drummer, but he has the first required skill, he listens well. Then he has the second required skill, he can improvise. Kudos!

    After seeing him do that, i now want to learn drums again. I remember there was a neighbor boy at my grandparents and he was like 10 years older than me, at the time I was like 7 and he had a drum set. I remember wanting to learn but he was never home obviously bc he was 17-18 so he was working or hanging out with friends. One time he was home he said he would teach me but he didn’t want anything happening to the set if I were to accidentally break something since it was his dads as well and was very expensive. Since then I’ve always eyeballed a drum set and I would always bounce my legs to the music with the beats. I’m 19yo now so hopefully I can get an electric one since I’m moving into an apartment soon and eventually move to an acoustic one. I don’t want to do it as a job but as a hobby along with art and reading.

    I believe that the fact he is used to play improvised jams with John and Flea for multiple years has helped him with this challenge. On those jams he has to experiment different things on the spot by trying guessing where the other two are going. Improvisation is something not many drummers are used to do and he became a master on it.
