@Von Want to really talk about being educated?? You and your family have done shit in music, period. My grandfather invented JAZZ, ran with his posse, that included his best friend, Scott Joplin. So European shut the fuck on a matter you! have no background in, to talk about the subject? You can thank the GOP,Joe McCarthy and the FBI under Hoover for that.During WW2,Scott did a concert where some Soviet troops were in the front row.In the early '50s,McCarthy got wind of it and called her on the carpet. He conveniently forgot the Soviets were our ally against Hitler during WW2.Scott was married to Adam Clayton Powell then.Powell was like Al Sharpton then.

But it was my grandfather who taught and lit that fire of ragtime in his buddy's music? No one remembers that or Grandpa either?

Some Black People have to understand that we don't have to live by their perception of us, we are a dynamic Race and they know it as well as we do. Dignity, Class, Style, Grace, Self Worth, and Standing Up for yourself and others to be treated right, breaks barriers.

But the racist one-drop rule came about which said that even if you had only one drop of black blood, you were to be classified as black. I was born in 1981 and I knew about her because I read all sorts of books as a child. I was fascinated with this queen and she made me love playing the piano.

M G it's good to know that our young youth read on black history..I'm an 56 yr old African American woman and I never heard of her. Someone needs to do a movie on her life like the other legends in her time

Are any of you commentators from the Big Apple???? Well I want you to know that Hazel Scott & Co. were the houseband at NYC's eastside EL MOROCCO CLUB. (early 70s). I was attending college full time & moonlighting as a cabbie. As soon as I saw her name at EL MOROCCO , I made it my business to attend a performance. I went back several times and always enjoyed Hazel's performances. I m bragging. I knew that the great Scott was history in the making.

Apart from her brilliant musical abilities, Hazel Scott was a person of high integrity and values. I had heard of her previously but I never knew the story behind her life. Thank you Ms Goldberg.

Same here - it kept coming up in my feed because I wanted to find out about Victor Feldman after seeing his name on a few Steely Dan pieces from the 80's. Man, am I ever glad I finally found the time to watch this and learn more about this woman than just being the wife of Adam Clayton Powell...

Never knew much about mother Scott, I knew she was married to activist, congressman, Adam C Powell, was on a few episodes of the 60's TV series Julia. Thank you for the enlighening, short, informative biography!
