Like Lena Horne, Hazel Scott represened the high Black bourgeoisie of the Jim Crow era. She would not take any demeaning roles portraying maids or buffoons on the Silver screens. She became one of the first black entertainers to host her own televsion program and married the young attorney Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The couple was held as an exmaple back then of upper crust Black culture.

I learned of Hazel Scott in college yet as Adam Clayton Powell’s wife and very little of her talent I knew of her activism via James Baldwin yet here you showed her extraordinary musical repertoire. Gorgeous without flaw I was more into her husband
as a youngster way into college ( political science major ) this is how I learned about her. Until now she had a tv show long b4 I was born is remarkable I thought Nat King Cole was the 1st Black on tv. I appreciate you presenting these iconic legends and continue success in doing so ☮️

Ms. Scott is just a genius. I am from New York and I learned about her in elementary school in the 90''s in the Bronx and Harlem. The Schomberg Institute in Harlem had a whole exhibition on her. In New York especially Harlem the black greats are taught in many of our schools. There are so many great black artists from the past that we do not hold up. She was erased by the history books because of her stand on equality. She lived in Paris after they blacklisted her. Our people used to be so talented. No one in popular black culture has this kind of talent. It's kind of sad that mediocrity is lifted up with talent being suppressed. Please do a video on Nancy Wilson and La Lupe the Queen of Latin Soul ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽🇨🇺🇵🇷🎵🎶🎶

I’ve never heard of Hazel Scott before this video! What a force! Aside from the video, can you do a video on Black women in the 60s and 70s and what their diets were? The bodies were different back then. A lot of women back then were much slimmer. I would like to know the difference from back then and today. There is an obvious difference.

I totally agree and I think it’s got to do with processed foods. Back then people grew some of their own food and their skin and hair looked healthy

I couldn’t understand why I never heard of her, but I knew of her lighter skin counterparts Lena Horne, Josephine Baker, Dorothy D, etc. Which is all by designed of course because she stood for something and loved her people.
