- How to fix Webasto Air Top Heaters, Vanlife, Overland
Twice now my Webasto Air Top heater has failed. Both times it was a case of cleaning it out. In this video I will show you what to clean and how. You can get you heater working again just with a few tools. No need for new parts, but its a good idea to carry a new gauze element. I expect this method would also work for other makes of heather as well as Webastos wet heaters and the heating process is the same.
You can buy a replacment gauze here.

Thanks for the clear video. I understand the unit much better. Others may have told you but you can push the glow plug gasket into the unit followed by the rubber plug so you need not fight it so much.
Thank you very much, superhelpfull, I fixed my heater just by removing a lot of carbon on the burner.
I will have to take mine apart soon, thanks for the walkthrough
Video was really helpful thanks
Excellent video mate, never seen one of those before 👍👍
Thats probably because it doesn't get cold over there :). Popular in Europe, Asia and I expect the US.
Thanks Matt
Great write up i need to service mine been qouted 400 euros!
I saw one video said to run heater on high for a few minutes to burn it clean before shutting heater off.
Hi Matt, the burner gauze has always been the Webasto‘ weak point, it used to be a fiberglass mat, it’s slightly better with a metal one, but it’s not as reliable as an Eberspächer which uses a vortex burner system, I’m not putting down the Webasto it’s just how it is, worked too hard, dirty fuel especially you see the result.
In arctic conditions run a longer exhaust and use the same type of pipe for the intake and lag them together to heat the intake air enough to keep a higher burn temp, it works...
Thanks Andy. Another great bit of information.
Hello and thank you for sharing!
did you get the 9 times-blink code on the controller for the glow plug?
Thanks a little bit of a pain , I remember in one video you were in Mongolia or Russia when the heater stopped working .
Hi John. Yes, although that was due to air in one case and the others were due to the diesel becoming too thick for the dosing pump to pull through. I did have to clean this heater once on my travels, either Mongolia of Russia.
I understand u and im aussie! What is best way to bleed a 3m line on a 2000st? I keep getting error 12 which is heater lockout. When off the pipe drips. Thanks Tom
👍🔥
I have the gas-petrol version of the Webasto. I took it apart and opened up the housing holding the burner screen. As I pried back the tabs to open the housing, I could see the tabs begin ning to crack. I cleaned the screen and replaced it, but when I replace the screen next time, more than likely the tabs will break as I bend them open. I have looked online for housings but am only finding the replacement screens. Suggestions?
Do can definitely get new burner parts. Could www.butlertechnik.com. Or ask another webasto deaaler.
Thanks Matthew, I guess it is a very similar process for Planar heaters, Espars and the Chinese knock offs?
I imagine so, But a comment from Andy T above suggests the Eberspächer use a different burner system and may give longer life.
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 the el cheapo chinese heaters are a direct copy of the eberspacher d4, been running mine for 5 years without a problem.
damnedest thing is, we can all buy the chinese heater as a full kit for less than the price of an Eberspacher dosing pump. Carry a second chinese heater kit and you have every spare should you ever need it. £100 for a full kit.
Buckaroo 61 good information. Do you know of anyone who has had problems with them?
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 only from novices who had them incorrectly fitted. so in reality. no.
Added bonus is that almost all of these heaters come with a blutooth remote control :-)
Matt, where can we obtain a burner gauze please? Can’t seem to find one at Butler tecknic
Hi Guy. I did reply to this but seems to have not worked. I have added a amazon link in the video description.
Matthew Payne | Adventurer | Filmmaker cheers, Matt
In matt's new up load, how to stich one's fingers back on to your hand 😂 I've yet to get myself one of those heaters after doing alot of searching to find the best and most reliable heater. Was going to buy a Chinese copy and decided not to, waste of money and they break down easily and can be dangerous and they can't be repaired. Buy trusted heaters if you have the funds, it makes sense.
Interesting what Andy T says above, about the Eberspächer having a better burner system. Maybe worth investigation if looking for a new heater.
Matthew Payne | Adventurer | Filmmaker I've heard something about the webasto heaters being that way matt, but wasn't sure if it was just the way some people used that heater incorrectly ie; dirty fuel. I'm going for a 4kw esbacher heater managed to find one for £900 mainly from what others have said about those heaters and parts are readily available. Webasto heaters are still worth an investment and I wouldn't knock them, so if anyone is thinking about buying a heating system for their overland vehicle consider both of them, you won't go wrong. just save the extra money like I did (on lock down) and I'm on a budget.
what was the symptom? fail to light, codes or what?
I don’t recall codes. But fails to light. And you will probably find diesel dripping from the exhaust if you tried to light multiple times without success.
Got a diesel heater that is blowing cold air anyone know how to fix it?
Does it show any faults? Flashing in a sequence. Does it not shut down itself.
Hi
It's been starting up for no reason blowing cold air. I have been pulling the fuse out to stop it. There are no fualt codes showing. It has never run out of fuel, but as a last resort I primed the fuel system and it has started up fine. So not sure why, but it's running ok.
Thanks for your reply.
@@paulsmithppm good to hear it’s resolved.
I have no heat. The thing is working but after two attempts the thing shuts down
Are you sure there are no air leaks in the fuel line?
@@matthewpayneadventurerfilm8902 figured it out! Everything was property connected, but the filter was on a 45deg decline. It should be vertical or horizontal. So after realizing that I zip tied it to be horizonal and the thing kicked in right away
Best fix is to toss it into the trash and buy a Vevor for $100.
Webasto is such garbage! 3 companies, 3 trucks, 3 "brand new" webasto heaters and literally all 3 had issues and didn't work. Webasto needs to change their name to Garbage!
Dude
Can you speak English, not mumblish (:?
Understand nothing :(
I do apologise. Something I need to work on.
What is this mumblish? MathewPayneAdventureFilm or vzvdvdsb.
