@@tamnickyle yeah honestly I am not against the possibility of a god. I just find that the ones people worship are too human-centric to be truely omnipotent. Like something truely unlimited I tend to think of as being the sum of all can exist not a fraction of what is like a person with specific beliefs, names, titles etc. At best logic states that every religions god/s are demigods since they have limits in who they are and could be. For instance Jesus claims to be all good but in order to know what good is we must establish what it isnt. The same with allah, thor, etc they all have limits. That establishment in itself gives said entity a personality which limits it from being truely all encompassing. An omnipotent entity (god) must be able to hold both good and evil as concepts it created otherwise that implies there is something outside of them on a higher level which created such distinction.

COMMENTS ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED! I grew up dispensationalist, so I have always assumed some dispensationalist ideas. However, in reading the Bible (on my own, without any guidance, as a true Baptist 😂), I have adopted the idea that there is a continuity between the Old Testament and New Testament, that the OT is still valid for us today, that the grace of Jesus still applied all throughout history, and that God’s people aren’t based on an ethnic group but rather based on those who trust in Him (true throughout all time).
However, there are some pitfalls that come to mind. There does seem to be a clear distinction between Israel as a nation and the church in Romans 9-11. And prophecies/promises in both he OT and the NT seem to be specifically for the Jewish people (God’s people within the Jewish ethnic group). I don’t see any way around this, while still believing in an OT-NT continuity.
The other problem is that there do seem to be dispensations as well as an overarching theme of grace. Almost as if God has Phase 1 and then Phase 2 in His plan. Thus why we don’t have to follow ALL the laws that were given specifically to Israel in the OT Law. Why else was the Law ever given? Romans says that the Law was given to show us the extent of our unrighteousness in order to prepare us for Jesus’ sacrifice. In this case, dispensationalism does seem to make sense.
I’m just going based off of my thoughts so I can help myself in this journey. I hope everything will make sense to me one day. I have my beliefs which I think are consistent but I’m not sure if I will ever be able to adhere to either dispensationalism or covenant theology.

Romans 9-11 can seem to make a distinction between Israel and the Church, but that is because when Paul refers to Israel, you need to see that he says in the same chapters “not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children.” (Rom 9:6-7, LSB). It can be confusing, but you should keep in mind that “Israel” does not mean “all Jewish people” every time Paul uses the word. Paul uses Israel to refer to the elect: “it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring” (v. 8). Try to look at each mention of Israel or the Church and distinguish whether Paul is referring to the elect or those with Jewish blood-sometimes the same word is used differently very close together.

Hi Gigahorse, I also feel a little lost listening to this video, but a theology class I'm taking right now feels relevant to your comment so I'll share my two cents:
Non-Israelites were part of the plan the whole time, ever since God's promises to Abraham about being a blessing to all the nations. The Old Testament's peak, in terms of foreshadowing the kingdom of God, was clearly during the reigns of David and Solomon. The Israelites shared God with others and people from many nations, even far away, came to pay homage at the temple. Relatively few converted because of the rigorous OT ritual & judicial laws, especially circumcision. Anyway, the promise to Abraham was remembered by Israel the whole time from Abraham to Jesus, and they expected to be made a blessing and share their God with the world. After the kingdom split between Israel and Judea, Israel eventually got deported and never returned. Some mixed with foreigners in Samaria, most mixed with foreigners far away. The Jews (tribes of Judah and Benjamin) got to return after their exile, but they were only ever a fraction of the whole. The New Covenant fully lets in the gentiles, and I think it's symbolically cool that the descendants of the lost tribes could also rejoin. As a descendant of gentiles I don't think of myself or Christians as literally Israel, but I'm comfortable with that because the God's plan included gentiles the whole time.
P.S. Remember the court of the gentiles around the temple? That was there because there were always gentiles around.
P.P.S. As far as "why the old law" doesn't entirely apply to us, it had three parts: moral law (10 commandments), ritual law, and judicial law. They're pretty distinct in the Old Testament. A big chunk of it, including the Levitical priesthood, were given specifically in response to the Baal-Peor incident (golden calf 2.0) in Exodus.
P.P.P.S. I wrote this while I should have been sleeping please let me know if this helps
P.P.P.P.S. Anyone think they can guess my denomination based on this lol

A lot of people like to skip over where in the prophets God proclaims he is disowning Israel and how genuinely angered he was with them, then Christ's parable of the tenants. It seems he still has a plan for the people of Israel but his children are those who do his will. Not any bloodline or ceremony.

The idea being, if the Mosaic law is a covenant of works instead of grace, with the assumption that there is a physical aspect to the Abrahamic Covenant, then circumcision is not equivalent to the sign of baptism because it couldn’t carry over from either the Mosaic or Abrahamic Covenants.

At 14:22, we're told that when 1st Timothy was being written, only the Old Testament was formally Scripture. Is this true? Consider the following:
"For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward." (1st Timothy 5:18)
This verse quotes other Scriptures, and it clearly calls them "Scripture."
"Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn." (Deuteronomy 25:4)
"And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house." (Luke 10:7)
"Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat." (Matthew 10:10)
It's clear from this that the parts of the New Testament which had been written before 1st Timothy were already recognized by the Church as being Scripture.
Peter also recognizes Paul's epistles as being Scripture.
"And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction." (2nd Peter 3:15-16)
Never let anyone tell you that the the Church did not recognize the New Testament as Scripture for centuries. The internal evidence from the New Testament proves otherwise.

Yes! Why do people think that the Sabbath/Shabbat is abolished? It’s part of the first ten guys! I totally agree we need to keep that.
Now I’m not a 7th day Adventist, but I do believe that the Sabbath is still on Saturday. No where in Scripture does it say that Jesus moved the Sabbath to Sunday. I get the symbolism of that he rose and how he is our rest, but no where is that commanded to the first day of the week. People point to Acts that some people were worshiping on Sunday, but the context is that they worshipped God every time they met. For at least the first few centuries, Christians rested on Saturday. There are a number of historical records of the Catholic Church having it changed to Sunday. The church is called to point to God’s ways, not to change them. It’s not some secret knowledge. It’s clear in the Word.

Just to touch up on the Sabbath, even under the Old Covenant animals had to be fed, children had to be attended to and the sick looked after.
Even in an ancient agrarian society, total 100 percent observance of the Sabbath wasn’t always possible.
I think that it’s important to keep the spirit of the Sabbath, as being a day set apart; just like back then, some form of labour was inevitable, also now it is, and it will be until Jesus returns.
The principle of setting aside a day to the Lord and to rest however, is a good one though not a yoke, because his commandments aren’t burdensome.

I really respect your content, but isn't it odd that all these debates about what "Salvation by faith alone is" would seem that the Catholic-Lutheran joint declaration on justification (Which the PCUSA subscribes to) is entirely disregarded by individual members of the Reformed, Lutheran, and Methodist denominations when we discuss what faith is.
I believe that the Bible does not teach salvation by "Faith Alone" because such term is only spoken of in negative terms by the divine scriptures.
The Bible teaches "faith that works through love"

I would say the first commandment applies, the others are more like the Mosaic version of obvious moral laws. Even the commandment about the Lord's name is taken further by Jesus, because he says not to make any oaths, so many Christians today believe it's only right to pledge or vow is for marriage, and depending on the church for certain types of ministry.
I attend a Lutheran church. The covenant with Abraham certainly applies, that's why Christians say Abraham is our spiritual father (coincidentally, almost everyone in the world is physically descended from Abraham today except possibly some remote island people, and some natives in the Americas.) That covenant was reasserted to Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, and even to David. The promised Messiah is the primary fulfillment of the covenant to Abraham insuring an eternal kingdom for Abraham's descendants by which the whole world is blessed. The only real difference since Pentecost is that Jesus is now the eternal prophet, priest, and king, so we are joined to him through baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Dispensationalism to me removes Jesus as the eternal Word of God prepared to do all that he's done since the world was created, and that what he has done transcends time, and covers all the sins from Adam until Judgment Day. That's why Job famously said, "I know that my Redeemer lives."

At 17:59, we are told that R. Scott Clark says that everything unique to the covenant of Moses is completely abolished in the New Testament. RZ doesn't seem to be listening to what he's quoting. Clark didn't say everything in the Old Testament is abolished--he said what is UNIQUE to the Old Testament is abolished. Things like the Ceremonial Law are unique to the Old Testament. Things like idolatry, murder, adultery, theft, and lying are condemned in the New Testament as well as the Old. Christians are obliged to avoid those things despite the fact that we're no longer under the Law of Moses. Just because the New Testament doesn't lay them out in as orderly a fashion as the Ten Commandments do is beside the point. Anything we're commanded to do or to avoid in the New Testament is law to us.
"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: but this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
"For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." (John 1:17)
"Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid." (Romans 6:12-15)
"But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law." (Galatians 5:18)
"If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15)
"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him." (John 14:21)

His exact quote was "everything distinctively Mosaic is abrogated". I disagree with that, because I think the moral laws God gave to Moses still apply to us today, laws like the 10 commandments. I don't think he was saying everything unique to the Old Testament is abolished, because that would be simply saying "everything that's not in the New Testament is not in the New Testament" that's just a Tautology.
The Covenants build on each other, all adding something to the overarching Covenant of Grace. What he seems to be saying is that the Covenant with Moses didn't add any building block to the Covenant that we still have today

    Two thoughts out the gate:
    1. Continental Reformed are not equivalent to Presbyterians. They have different confessions with divergent doctrinal commitments and distinct ecclesiological differences. Continental Reformed are formal Protestants (contra Rome), whereas Presbyterians are puritan non-conformists (contra the Protestant English Church).
    2. Republication of the Covenant of Works is not esoteric. It is simply poorly taught, thus poorly learned, and thus prevailingly discussed with only partial literacy by incompetent seminarians and podcast bros to standard laity. This creates, maintains, and passes on confusion. While the terms of "convenant of works" and "republication" rotate within the Reformed sphere of discussion, the concepts which those words signify are just as present in the Lutheran and Anglican traditions. Historically speaking, Anglicans systematized Covenant Theology before the Reformed.

      Matthew 28:1
It even says the Sabbath was finished and then on the first day of the week (Sunday) so my question is if we are still to be held to the 10 commandments why are we to violate one of them ? You also have the early Acts church celebrating the Sabbath Jew and Gentile alike so it doesn't seem it was changed until later (probably 100 years later because we know the epistle of Barnabas says that the early church was worshipping along side the Jews in the temple and that we needed to separate from them.

      @gabija_v2012 Před 10 měsíci

@@krilzen6866 The Sabbath, as observed in the context of the time of Jesus' resurrection, would have indeed been the Sabbath in Judaism which for Jews is the seventh day of the week in their own faith, so they went after the day of rest. Sunday as a day of rest in the Roman Empire was indeed only properly formalised by Constantine the Great in 321 AD, but this was the result of early Church Christians gradually recognising the day of the Resurrection as highly important. Given that there was clearly an intent to spread Christianity rather than Judaism underlying this, the view of the Resurrection as coming to be favoured as the proper day of rest is not surprising.
Looking at the Epistle of Barnabas (specifically 15:3-9), it describes the "seventh day" as not only within the calendars of our early lifespans, it is also an allegory for the Day of Judgement, the Second Coming, until which the seventh day can not be truly hallowed by our observance. This day will be followed by the "eighth day," the eternal, redeemed world. Within this allegory of the end of the week/the end of time, the eighth day represents Christ conquering death so that we may obtain eternal life, outside of time as we know it, our hope as Christians.
On the other hand, non-Messianic Jews do not believe that Jesus is Christ, so they are metaphorically choosing to honour the day before Jesus conquers death and reconciles the world...which, to me, does not make sense as a Christian. But, I realise that certain denominations prefer to trust the most literal interpretations of Scripture only. Full disclosure, I am Catholic, so I have not studied types of Adventists in great detail, and I do not wish to come across as disrespectful in case you are. I do not consider those who wish to worship on Saturday (Jews or otherwise) as automatic heretics.
Anyway, the overall argument from the Epistle of Barnabas seems to point to the laws and customs of the Old Testament as prefiguring the arrival of Christ, who fulfills them perfectly, not us, giving greater importance to the first day of the week as seen by Jews of the time/Sunday as we call it in our societies/the day of the Resurrection.
As far as I can understand the text itself, and upon cross-referencing with its historical and current positions of validity in canonical early Church writing, this Epistle does not seem to have a Judaizing position. It also points to understanding Sunday as the mandated properly hallowed day in light of Jesus' resurrection, which is very much in line with historical development of Christian teachings but nothing is forbidding you from worshipping God on another day of the week, so I think that, ultimately, no Commandments are technically broken. Plus, add to this the fact that across human history, many civilisations have been operating according to many different calendars, and it is only in more recent times that we have become more globally in sync. I think God understands.
Thank you if you have read to the end of this monstrously long comment 😅.

Not to spend too much attention on what RZ indicates is a tangent, but it is an interesting question how Christians out to take care of animals.
In Genesis, God grants both a blessing to the animals (Gen 1:22) and to mankind (Gen 1:28). These are separate blessings.
Man is told to rule over all creatures, and I think it is right that we do, but we should also remember that they hold their own blessing to life outside of and independent from our own. They are creation as are we.
I'm not making any claims as to whether or not we should eat McDonalds (per RZ's example) but I think we can be assured abject cruelty is not condoned. The metaphor "the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11) only makes sense if there is some sort of assumed standard of care for animals - the hired hand who is not the good shepherd notwithstanding.

That is why I often like scientists or mathematicians who deal with the Bible more than theologians. Those I have in mind first define a common methodology and then they determine the terms they use so that there are no misunderstandings.
And by having a common methodology, any theology is a logical deduction in which there is no space left to simply make assertions and interpret the Bible according to them, if they cannot be measured that way. People who do not explain their concepts so clearly that also a non-religious person understands them, should they have the will to think themself into it, and everyone who has no interest in agreeing on common methods of interpretation, so that every difference can be clearly resolved with calculation, cannot be taken seriously in theology for me.
Because without these, it is in theology like in philosophy often: It would just be the inprint of ones character.

However Biblical Christianity agree much more than they disagree, especially on the most fundamental topics, but the most complicated ones, despite often being non essential, usually make the most noise. I recommend that, at least, you go to a biblical church aka a Church that puts the bible in the highest authority.

Will I get crucified in the comments for saying that we are no longer under the Ten Commandments? Let's see:
The Ten Commandments were the foundation of the Mosaic Law, part of which was for the Israelites until that covenant was fulfilled in Christ, and part of which is for all people across all time periods. This is due to the distinction between ceremonial law, civil law, and moral law. No Christian asserts that the ceremonial law applies directly as it did before, because then we would have to continue temple sacrifices and mend the torn curtain. The same thing can be said for the civil law. As such, there are parts of the Law that carry over and some that don't, and they dont carry over because they are part of the Law or Ten Commandments, but because they are part of the moral law that is found in the covenant of works

It's somewhat misleading to say: "You can't stop sinning." If you take it as a generality and not practically, of course you can't stop it, but it's just rationalizing disobedience to God. What we should do, and the Biblical way is: confess the exact sin we have committed, repent it, and don't do it anymore. Just that one sin. The Lord gives you grace to stop doing that one sin. And then, repent the next sin, ask for grace stop doing and so on. And you can become less and less of a sinner, one sin at a time.
Of course Paul did not return to persecuting christians, after he repented it.
Of course Zacchaeus did not return to ruining people's lives financially, after he repented it.
Of course the woman who wept at Jesus' feet did not return to her old ways.
Of course the lives of the former public sinners who followed Jesus, changed.
Jesus is savior. He saves us from sin if we want to be saved. He can change us, if we want to change and ask him.
Or did Jesus command something impossible when he said to the woman caught in adultery: "Go and sin no more."?
