I could listen to Guthrie all day...wait...the clock says I have been.
I've been going down a Guthrie Govan rabbit hole lately and I'm amazed at what a pleasant, attentive, and likable guy he is; especially a guy with such a huge amount of talent. For me, that's as amazing as his musical prowess.
Interviewer: "Which guitarists are overrated"
Guthrie: "It doesn't matter." :)
What a class act. I adore that man.
Incredible talent, humble, wise and smart person. I aspire to be like him.
***** Pretty sure you're wrong about that.
***** I have ACTUALLY had the pleasure of talking to Mr Govan. Very nice and approachable.
+ZOMBIELANDakaUSA Yeah, you are talking out of your arse. I don't even believe you know anyone. ;)
+ZOMBIELANDakaUSA I was at an aristocrats gig in august. Bryan and Marco stuck around for 10-15 min afterwards, then left. Guthrie literally talked to every single person who wanted to speak with him. I was the last person in the club, along with my girlfriend, waiting to speak with him. This was after, during the concert, him politely asking people not to ask for selfies after the concert because he had face planted the other day, and his nose was fucked up. After the show, so many people were asking for selfies, and he was getting visibly agitated. Finally, after everyone else had dissipated and it was just him, myself and my girlfriend, I approached him. I told him we had flown to montreal from Halifax, Nova Scotia just to see the show, and that I dragged my girlfriend with me. She told him she was initially just humouring me (she's amazing), but that it was the best concert shed ever seen, just totally blown away. He looked at us in bemusement, saying "ah, you guys enjoy self inflected torture I see". Then, I asked him if he might agree to a selfie, with our heads turned away and our hands raised in the customary rock sign. He agreed. I apologize for the lengthy ramble, but I can personally attest to not only this guys otherworldly musicianship, but also to his unbelievably cool and friendly demeanour.

+ZOMBIELANDakaUSA that's the pic of us
I really enjoy listening Guthrie. so modest person, kind and good and his amazing way of speaking (broad vocabulary), describing things - like painting and seeing at once. vy intelligent person and fantastic guitarist. he's probably the best musician on the planet currently and still down to earth. Best of luck, Guthrie! yo!
38 minutes of guthrie talking? i say yes
You know you're open minded when you talk about Jimi Hendrix, Allan Holdsworth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Chet Atkins, Dizzie Rascal and Flamenco.
He's so ridiculously humble, I love his approach to the instrument and music itself. The whole "guitar as a typewriter and not the book" analogy is brilliant, I can see how he manages to be so creative when he doesn't limit himself to sounding like a stereotypical guitar player.
An open minded man of upright morals and ideas. I aspire to be like him.
WOW !
Dude is acting like he's nothing & no one !
He's COOOOL :X
This guy has changed my total outlook on music.. He is such an inspiration!!!
Outstanding guitarist. His touch on Steven Wilson albums is stunning. Top guy as well.
Thanks for this upload. Listening to Guthrie (either play or speak) is always great fun, especially for 38 minutes in HD haha
He's not a guitarist nor a musician, he IS music.
Awesome interview, one of the best ones with Guthrie I've seen. Thank you
Indeed! Maybe italian girls are the best for this kind of task! :D
Wow. His dad showed him a few chords and he took it from there, with no lessons either. It's really, really inspiring to be in the same exact boat with someone as talented as him. :D
thanks for this upload ^_^
great interview, thank you
Legend! and good to know he's actually working on his second solo album. Thanks for upload
Great Interview! Thanks a lot!
His choice of words is just as brilliant as the notes he plays
Exactly guys not just a beast player but very wise
Pure inspiration! I was getting all bummed out over never really studying at a proper school, but this man, I think, has gotten me back on track!
I have played for 36 + years, and I had been in a bit of a rut lately, but hearing that GG is predominantly self-taught, as am I, really gladdens me.
Excellent interview, excellent interviewer.
really enjoy this interview
Awesome, thanks!
great interview. great questions
Great interview!
What a fantastic and inspiring interview!
REALLY GOOD INTERVEIW!!!
I just love Govan!!!!
so great. yet so humble, friendly and down to earth. a role model for everybody, musician or not. i love this guy.
Such a sweet guy - love his humility and dry humour. Looking forward to those new releases
"I remember learning my first chord, but I don't remember much about life before that." - Pretty much says it all about Guthrie.
This interviewer was actually really good. Great questions.
The interviewer has such a pleasant, lovely voice and fantastic questions!!!
In addition to being one of the greatest of all time- I love how he's engaging even with the most sterile and obvious interview questions. When he's asked to catagorize his works into one genre he settles on fusion, and is then asked to consider rock again. He was even asked to disparage a top 3 'overrated' guitarists! Guthrie understandably detours, and offers more valuable insight. |m|
Its always a pleasure listening to his interviews.....Intelligent questions asked by the Lady....Nice Stuff...
I've followed Guthrie ever since he started transposing for Guitar Techniques when to me, he was always the player who could get closer to the original than anyone else. His music now is not the sort of music I am into, but I could not name anyone more technically capable or able to cover so many genres. This interview also demonstrates how humble, intelligent and genuine he is.
What a great interview, both Guthrie and the lady with the quite pleasant voice.
Great interview, the journalist was really good and well informed.
He's soo clever.. i love the way he speaks... and of course the way he plays..
Simply the best musician on earth. Just watching this interview make you want play music !
Cheers !
this interview was great.
Amazing guitarist,,and humble with it,,100% class.
I've only just discovered this interview and I have to say that the interviewer is one of the best I've heard. Her questions were really intelligent and probing. Didn't catch her name but I take my hat off to her. She deserves to be better known. Very well done.
Thank you! She's Barbara Caserta, check our channel for other interviews and live set
Thanks for this interview. I thought the questions were wide-ranging and the interviewer allowed Guthrie lots of space to answer and digress. The interviewer established a great rapport and Guthrie's charm shone through.
Typical Guthrie interview -
Interviewer: You're an amazing musician, your phrasing is beautiful, your technique is flawless. How hard did you have to work at this?
Guthrie: Who, me?
I love both Govan and Vai. It is fascinating to see the difference in their two personalities. Guthrie is perhaps the most humble, well intentioned player I've ever heard speak.
What a really cool down to earth guy!
i will sooooooo mention Guthrie when they ask me about my inspirations on an interview in the future!
such a good guy
This man is pure motivation!
~ Love the way his mind works
Onore a Guthrie Govan. Genio della chitarra.
I believe this guy is part of my favorites guitar player...amazing guitar player...a new guitar hero...
great interviewer, she knows her stuff, as for Guthrie he is a Brit so what else would we expect, modest to the hilt and so talented, a true inspiration for anyone in the creative field, bravo!
This guy is really awesome and fascinating...
he is just so humble ,Nice guy,Mw
I like his matter of fact way of saying things. Love his playing as well :-) Í play cliffs of Dover on saxophone (psst see clip of mine) with a back up track he once created. first interview I see of him and he seems like a really nice guy.
Incredible sympathic musician
Wow he started at 3 years old. Wish I would
have.My parents took a more half hearted effort .I got my 1st guitar at 5 but it was plastic with plastic strings which you couldn't play a chord if you tried. But at 13 I officially started seriously but when you start at 3 your brain is so much more capable of learning.
Lovely interview, Guthrie is very engaging, approachable and humble with it. No guitar demo in this interview. 'The guitar is not the book you're writing... it's just the typewriter'.
You Suhr, are amazing.
He said he is litteraly at the point where his fingers know exactly where to go in every situation. That is just remarkable when you think about it. Absolutley no limitations other than the ones he puts on himself.
I was noticing that too. Most interviews with musicians are almost painful (because the questions are generic or stunted), but this lady really got the interesting stuff going. :)
i thought the interview was gonna suck but the girl asked pretty good questions. good job!
This person has mastered the guitar.
Cheers, I had no idea.
Guthrie is the best! Also pretty humble!
What a great interview. Looks like Guthrie is enjoying himself too.
Am I the only one here, old enough to be reminded of early Ian Anderson interviews?
i like the yngwie shout-out. wasn't expecting that
What a top man- eloquent entertaining deeply intelligent and modest with it - Steve Vai has much of this quality about him too and it would be cool to have a the two doing a project together
master
This guy is great. I Love Shawn Lane and Yngwie Malmsteen. No one is better than anyone, Guitar is for everyone.
he started when he was 3 :o i started when i was 15 thats gave me some hope i might one day be as good as him :D
YESSSSS!!! NEW GUTHRIE MATERIAL SOON :D
Spoken as well as Guthrie ever could, my friend
The interviewer told some very good questions! She also has a cute accent
hooooly sh.... 37 mins... i gonna lay back and listen then :D
Always reminds me of a young Ian Anderson (from Jethro Tull)
You can play an altered scale, or a harmonic/melodic minor :)
28:40 - 29:42 greatest words of wisdom and quote ever if you are a musician :)
Snap!!!
Love what he says about Yngwie at 15:35 . Always felt the same
HE STARTED WHEN HE WAS THREE!?! it all makes sense now...
In Hungarian it makes more sense to see Guthrie there, when it would be translated as "fasza". And Guthrie is a fasza musician and a stand up guy.
Some people can practice 8 hours a day for years and not have the talent he has in his little pinky. He is fantastic.
@karimsalhani Malmsteen is a Pioneer, one the most accomplished musicians of our time.
14:02 God everything he says is just spot on
yea hes pretty freakin awesome. watch and learn kids. this is who you wanna be. even if you dont ever touch a guitar
men... men come to my clinics! haha LEGEND
I think sometimes people miss the point of the distinction between what Guthrie Govan does and practicing. He still sat for hours playing VERY SLOWLY, focusing on perfect contact and timing. The point in his mind he was just playing music, and slowing it down, because he was struggling with it. He never sits down to do a half an hour of sweep picking exercises. But if he's having trouble with a complicated sweep, he might spend a half an hour working on it slowly. See what I mean?
Minnemann and Beller sure know who to pick! Damn what a luxury position they must be in... "Oh, Greg Howe can't come? Shame, let's ask Guthrie!". They are my two favourite players ever!
I think at first he thought she was talking about practicing recently. He probably played quite a bit when he was younger or else he's a genie. The point that he made though was that you shouldn't only practice exercises but you should play music so it's not like practice.
i wanna see him with his banjo!
i like that Guthrie is respectful and well thought out. likeable, would be fun to jam with and i wouldnt have to cringe with him around my kids.. now, if only the rest of the world would catch on..
He is a God.
Guthrie rocks...and plenty of other people rock as well. I like too many even to list. My top ten changes all the time...depends on my mood!! hahaha
What was that thing he took of the fret board when he took his guitar out? I've never seen that thing before.
This guy inspires me but how did he develop his incredible technique without hours of attention dedicated practicing?
