9:33 ".... ah there....I'm trying to turn it into a Minor 7th, which is a slightly more 'expensive' version of the same chord..." Part of his ability as a teacher, is the fact that he is literate; both on the instrument and with the English language. Great wit. Great musicality.
I've seen and heard droves of fasting playing, shredder-type guitarists in my lifetime. But it is his playfulness & sly sense of humor that makes Guthrie Govan's hyper-virtuosic playing all the more appealing to me. #respect
@Carlos Mendoza He put his right index finger over the frets and muted them and then did hammer ons and pull offs with his left hand if you fret lighter you can do this with harmonics as well.
actually, he knows where every note is on the f'board, and how will they sound, he just remember how Nokia's theme was and reproduced it in real time..
It's all about context. The context here is that he is demonstrating and explaining the guitar to a large diverse crowd so it's important to be versatile in this situation so that at least some of what he plays will resonate with everyone. This is why versatility is important in this context. You are clearly intelligent, so why did you find something critical to say and find it hard to comprehend this "demonstration" of his guitar? Your point might be valid in isolation but here you're wrong.
@boogahed So does he use this multifarious approach on his album too? Would you say that he's replicating multiple styles? Is the album orignal enough to give him his own voice? Dunno, haven't heard it.
Satriani is awesome, but hes not Guthrie's level. Satch has a great ability to bring emotion to his playing and hes likely got a better knack for writing but hes definitely not at the same technical and knowledge level as Guthrie. At least not in practise/performance... who knows what he plays in his spare time though, perhaps he knows a lot more than he tends to write and play. i think thats the case for a lot of guitarists though, i know Petrucci studied jazz etc... but theres not too much in the way of jazz lines coming through in his solo's.
firks1991 You will be very hard pressed to find a guitarist that knows more about music and music theory than Joe Satriani- Guthrie Govan included. When Satriani was 18 he studied rigorously under Billy Bauer and jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, he has a complete mastery of Jazz guitar as well as other styles of guitar. Satriani plays folk guitar too, he also plays the banjo, harmonica and keyboards amongst other musical instruments. He's a true musical master. Guthrie has a more polished technique than Satriani though- so does Satriani's famous student, Steve Vai. However Satriani has mastered everything from Folk, Rock, Classical to shred and Jazz fusion guitar. He's definitely on Guthrie's level.
to be fair i didnt know all of what you've said. hes more accomplished than i thought. its a shame he doesnt utilise more of his abilities! i liked to see him live again actually as its been some years.
firks1991 Satriani likes rock and blues because he was inspired to play guitar by listening to Jimi Hendrix, however he is one of the most technically accomplished guitarist alive. He doesn't believe in showing off but in creating what he feels is good music. I think Guthrie Govan is the same. As good as Guthrie may appear he's holding back what he can truly do with the guitar. I have great respect for both musician, IMHO they're at the very top of modern electric guitar playing.
Anyone else think he sounds very very similar to buckethead when demonstrating the slapping on guitar? Both I believe are the greatest guitarist around :D
How can Bucket you say he is overrated??? That is definately one thing that he is not... look i'm not gonna argue with you but I have listened to both guitarists for many years now and i believe that they are both amazing. You obviously haven't heard much of Bucket's songs if you think he just does weird/killswitch stuff
Being versatile is not especially important. Honing a single minded craft is. But I've noticed how these things entertain people to no end, probably because all other avenues have been exhausted and it's simply not easy to impart the aspects of music (the parts in between the notes) which can't be taught, so we focus on the externalities. That being said, I really have no problem with GG.
@ 1:55 everyone laughs thinking Nokia theme. Its kind of ironic that that little melody comes from a a famous piece for guitar by a famous spanish guitarist!
"I'm Guthrie i come from a land far,far away...."
I knew it!
he's from another world
9:33 ".... ah there....I'm trying to turn it into a Minor 7th, which is a slightly more 'expensive' version of the same chord..."
Part of his ability as a teacher, is the fact that he is literate; both on the instrument and with the English language. Great wit. Great musicality.
Probably the greatest guitarist overall in the world.
I can't sit through a video of this man without a guitar in my lap. That's how much he inspires me. :D
That’s beautiful man. How’s the guitar journey going 10 years later?
What can this guy not play? One of the best guitar players in the world
Has to be the most versatile guitarist currently walking the 🌎 so underrated
Play with his teeth? Play with both left and right hand at the same time ?
@@paulgilbert3139 You play most instruments by using your left and right hand at the same time.
@@burger2229 what i mean is play like michael angelo batio
greatest guitar teacher of all time, amazing skills Guthrie
He's definitely the greatest guitarist the world has ever seen. :P
9:58 He played like me..
I've seen and heard droves of fasting playing, shredder-type guitarists in my lifetime. But it is his playfulness & sly sense of humor that makes Guthrie Govan's hyper-virtuosic playing all the more appealing to me. #respect
5:25 do I hear Slidey Boy?
Wish he still played the suhr! Sounds way more meaty
So many different style at will, such a brilliant player....
guthrie is the perfect blend of amazing ability- dry humour and slightly this side of patronizing english wit.....great for clinics

@Carlos Mendoza He put his right index finger over the frets and muted them and then did hammer ons and pull offs with his left hand if you fret lighter you can do this with harmonics as well.
thanks
I live in Raleigh NC, and I'm so bummed I missed this
what a legend
I'm really respects GG 🙏
I am Guthrie, I come for a land far far away..... AWSOME !!!!1
Guthrie's screwing around with different tones is far more artistic and technical than anything I could play after planning ahead for months.
Ofcourse it is :D Thank you
Only this man could get an applause while DEMOING A GUITAR
SPLUNK!!! Taking the SH out of IT.
Love him! "I can't do the Victor Wooten thing" *proceeds to do the Victor Wooten thing* ..
he has 2 right sides brains, thats why he is so good.
@WencesWasHere
He used to study in Oxford when he was young.
It's kind of funny for me to think Guthrie sitting down and learning to play the Nokia theme.
actually, he knows where every note is on the f'board, and how will they sound, he just remember how Nokia's theme was and reproduced it in real time..
lots of stuff going on there!
@Phrygian12
Fair enough.
i was there
@Samsgarden What is it you're not getting? He's demonstrating how versatile his guitar is, plain and simple.
every guitarist who's advanced at slapping techniques definitely will sounds like that
To bad the camera are flipping around hole the time ,what a genius master
So many Tabs open!!!!!
You're right, he's doing a clinic where he demonstrates styles - nothing really wrong with that. Grab an album and you'll hear some music!
@torinizanarwhal aginst the wall on the left it was pretty crammed in there
@WencesWasHere He's got a degree in English/Literature, that explains how he's quite witty, smart and articulate
"What are you doing? You used to be good" Hahahaha, laughed for so long. Sadly I've had this happen to a couple of guitarist friends. It sucks.
@torinizanarwhal I'm in london and i've heard he teachers in bournmouth (south-east england I think).. i'd love to take a few lessons with guthrie.
Slidey Boy, by Guthrie Govan,
Album: Erotic Cakes
4:42, The Young Punx
Lol fuckin GG is the shit. Great vid man, thanks for the upload. Must of have been hellavu show.
He was demonstrating his signature guitar, that;s all
It's all about context. The context here is that he is demonstrating and explaining the guitar to a large diverse crowd so it's important to be versatile in this situation so that at least some of what he plays will resonate with everyone. This is why versatility is important in this context.

Anyone have TAB for this whole video? lol
+Troy Thibodeaux Transcribe them :)
Hi what was that bridge pick up again
@Samsgarden Guthrie sounds like guthrie i think it's pretty distinct
Can anyone tell me what he said about Indian music in the last minute of the video? I cant hear/understand him..
+Brian Griffin basically those odd time signature and note groupings are very natural in indian music.
Gonna be weird seeing him with Charvel now instead of Suhr.
I still want a Suhr Modern regardless.
@boogahed
So does he use this multifarious approach on his album too?
Would you say that he's replicating multiple styles? Is the album orignal enough to give him his own voice?
Dunno, haven't heard it.
IMHO Guthrie is perhaps the most technically gifted guitarist in the world. Only Satriani can compete with him in technical knowledge and skill.

ah that makes sense! yeah i agree with you.
I taught those n00blets well! Or should I say n00blings? Which one sounds better?
2:18-2:34 LOL he does an unholy shred and is just like "so ya lots of stuff going on there"
Anyone else think he sounds very very similar to buckethead when demonstrating the slapping on guitar? Both I believe are the greatest guitarist around :D
At 3:33 this morning I licked an owl. It tasted of coffee.
How can Bucket you say he is overrated??? What's the chord he plays at 2:31? Something along the lines of a major 11th with a 6th?
Guthrie is.
5:23 what is this song, its beautiful and familiar.
5:22
Guthrie Snrub over here
hes wearing the t-shirt of power
3:50 lol pissed my pants
lol at the Nokia theme
Actually being versatile is important.
You know you can speak the language of music when you make puns in the form of guitar licks..
Actually, he's demonstrating his signature guitar.
Not just demonstrating his guitar, but how to get almost any sound by only using the controls of an electric guitar.
8:43 is that the seinfeld technique
What is he playing at 6:50? The melody is familiar but I cant remember the name and it's driving me nuts!!
where was this held?
What does he do in 2:59 :O?
so what guitar is that?
@ 1:55 everyone laughs thinking Nokia theme. Its kind of ironic that that little melody comes from a a famous piece for guitar by a famous spanish guitarist!
It's a workshop... he's teaching people how to get different sounds out of the guitar with different microphone-settings. It's not a preformance.
08:37 = bubble rap
i keep playing 12:11 over and over XD
Rage against the machine @ 5:05 😝
"duncan jb..."
This man could demo any sounding amp, and sell it with ease.
@Samsgarden it's a demo clearly u haven't listened to his album
