I have never read a title more applicable to me. My ekkie is so easy to trigger. Even head scratches are restricted and closely monitored for mating behavior.
Edit: two minutes in and it's relatable. I taught Holly to turn one way with an under the perch cue, and when I was trying to use and above the head cue for the other direction she'd sometimes misread the signal and "squat" to be tread. She doesn't anymore, thankfully.
What a small world, Lincoln's mom here. Yeah only time Lincoln let's me touch his head is when he's getting aroused so those are a big no-no. I can't bring him near my computer either otherwise it immediately triggers hormones. Not sure why.

Great class and a beautiful female electus. Interesting how the perch vs a flat surface changed her thinking, and this little change made a huge difference. This is one lucky bird to hava a family who cares enough to take her to the best. Thank you for sharing.

Oh Dave thank you for letting people know about sleep my Eclectus has a separate cage in a quiet warm dark room to maximize his sleep and it helps so much. But everyone kept saying I was spoiling him. Lol.

I really enjoyed this training session. I feel so relaxed and chill when watching, which I'm sure is a good thing. If you have both owner and bird relaxed it goes smoother. I'm starting to noticed way more what to look for in a Hormonal bird. Great session. Love the side lesson from dave, " jumper means sweatshirt ". I swear over a year of watching I'm much better equipped to get my bird. Thx and keep them coming. Kathleen.

Canary: no stick, no clicker but by showing treat like u do, I got him to step up onto t perch on scales, he learnt so fast. he loves hemp seeds n now the ONLY way he gets hemp seed is for reward he's earnt. thanks so much for your awesome videos. I use the same words for any comand and some hand signals with the word but its been so sucessful and he is so amazing, and so clever.

Ahh target training puts my Male eclectus into a hormonal state before it has even begun! Just seeing the stick causes him to start regurgitating. When I walk away from his training bubble and hide the stick from his view he will pluck out feathers and blow them at me. He just stays hyped hormonally for an extended period of time, plucking, rubbing his beak aggressively on anything he can, weaving his head back and forth etc. He doesn't bite me or anything but you can tell he is so frustrated and uncomfortable!

I don’t agree with Ekkies having to do stupid tricks. Just enjoy the wild bird in her & talk to her a lot as a family member. My Ekkie has a massive vocabulary and always speaks clearly and in context.
I NEVER handle my 15yo female Ekkie as she doesn’t want to be manhandled.. fair enough. She’s beautiful healthy never plucked and she’s in the lounge room with a cover at night so she can see & be part of all the activities.

That's an issue that I have not seen any training video address. Would clothing choices have a direct impact on the success or failure of a formal training session? I've heard of stories when a family bird takes offense at a new hat or pair of purple fuzzy slippers and starts to act out, but shouldn't we consider the type clothing we wear during times when we want our birds to be able to focus and learn?
The thing that you said about the cage cover, is that applicable for all birds??

And what about the ones who don't need any hormonal triggers at all? My ekkie girl is hell bent on laying eggs no matter what season it is or what distractions I put in place. She became egg bound and her oviduct was removed, then a hormone implant went in. Her strong desire to lay kept going until she had a horrid mass of egg yolks in her abdomen. The Avian vet assures me that I have done, and am doing, everything right for my girl, she is just a prolific layer. So we keep an eye out for the telltale nesting behaviour and replace the implant as needed.
since ur an expert with birds i need ur help! i have 2 green cheeked conures that are tamed andare adorable! they love me and love playing with me and are super energetic and quite affectionate but there is an issue. They do not like being pet or scratched on the head or any physical contact.The only physical contact they like is stepping up on my finger and going on my shoulder. Any advice?
Hey, I’m getting a green cheek conure soon from a friend who didn’t have the time to take care of it. It’s wings ARE clipped and I don’t know if I should keep getting them trimmed until I can train it. I have to budgies already and they will be housed separately in the same room. If anyone has any tips or anything that they could share that would be epic. 👍
I adopted a 7 year old green cheek in February. His wings were clipped but he was able to fly quite well short distances. I've worked hardest on what I think of as behavioral training - station/recall, step up/step down and target training and I've managed several tricks as well. He's almost always quite eager to train and is very well behaved. He's fully feathered now and we are having a lot of fun together. I've adhered very carefully to permission based training advocated on this channel. Good luck!
I have a green cheek. I would recommend not letting your budgies out when the conure is out. They can be a bit aggressive around smaller birds, and their beaks are much stronger. I hope you enjoy your new friend. Just be patient with them, everything is new for them too. Lots of treats for good behaviour, and love.
Molting and getting all flighted feathers in takes a while and we are big advocates of flight. I think it also holds you more responsible for doing your training properly because it makes you really think how to get the bird to do what you want by choosing to stay with you rather than flee.
Omg hi love the vid so I need some advice do you think a green cheek Conure, a moustache parakeet, cockatiel, dusky Headed Conure, or peach fronted Conure would be good for an apartment?
All of these birds can get pretty loud. Whether they bother your apartment neighbors or not probably would depend on the neighbors. I'd recommend going to a rescue and telling them you what your looking for, because there are individual birds that are quieter or louder in any species.
If you can't or don't want to go to a rescue maybe get a female cockatiel. I hear they tend to be quiet. Cockatiels are also less screechy then conures, so maybe the neighbors wouldn't mind the noise as much.
Probably a cockatiel or fancy parakeet would work well. I also have a Canary Winged Parakeet which can be pretty quiet.
I have a green cheek that is so quiet I wouldn't worry for a minute having it in an apartment. The trick is keeping her entertained and make sure sure is comfortable with cage time. A lot of green cheeks will scream for their person so from the start I gave her time in her cage with lots of toys. A rescue is a great idea!!
My bird behavior is just off the wall. He is friendly , but! Always always hormonal .. unfortunately, he is my first bird pet as far as his breed cockatiel. Pie I was told .
He is a amazing when talking and loving nature. As far as diet goes, he won't eat anything raw. I have to cook every veggie..
He loves carrots and potatoes...very fussy appetite...I thought I'd try getting him a companion, but! The breeder told me not too because he has been on his own with me since he basically came off formula.
Any suggestions on what I can or stop giving him to slow down his urge to mate???
He is definitely a loner and again very friendly also, fussy very very fussy about treats.
I also noticed any new toy I try to introduce him to, he becomes afraid and just freaks out. I don't understand why this is happening???

Can I get a pair of Macaws (Hyacinth Macaws) and will they be able to breed and raise their own babies in captivity? I think my main question is will they lay eggs in captivity and if so will they be fertile?

My question is feather seems to be the same size/weight all the time by just looking at them. But you can overfeed bird and in gets to be chubby?

Do female birds have stronger hormone reactions than male birds? I don’t own bird but am looking into getting one in the near future. Just wondering if that’s true. Because from videos I’ve seen it seems like female birds have a stronger hormone reaction.
That's hard to say, I think it's more of a "bird by bird" basis than gender related. I tend to see more hormonal male amazons and cockatoos than females in those species, but in macaws I notice it more in the females... and with the eclectus specifically... probably more in the females. So I really think it varies case by case.
How do you stop biting? When i research i see “ let them bite you and don’t react” or “ make a loud noise “ but is there any other way?
I got some bad bites from my adopted female eclectus during the first month, but since I started to tell her "tch-tch-tch" as soon as I saw her nervous, she has calmed down and doesn't bite anymore. Now when she feels like biting she herself says "tch-tch-tch" and steps back as soon as I make the "don't bite me" facial expression ahahah.

I can see that the birds feather condition is not that nice e.g matted feathers on the breast and stomach, is this due to hormones or poor diet or something else?
Usually in ekkies it's poor diet and over-handling (the oils on our hands mess with the oils in their feathers) and there seems to be a huge misunderstanding of the ekkie diet.

Come on works as a command my girl will say that to my boy when she wants him or say it to me when she doesn't want to come. She reminds me of my eccy but she is better behaved. However I can get her in her cage easily. My boy tho I have to trick him in and then he makes sad little noises but I can pick him up with my hands and he won't bite. I've had birds for 16 odd years and I think that my female eccy is the most difficult bird I've ever had. I would never get rid of mine I love her but female eccys should only go to males, she has bit every one of my girlfriends.
