Heh Jamie. I loved the look on Dave's face when all of a sudden he notices everyone is talking to each other and you guys are just guests lol. I have to say hearing how this lady shares the info that they smoke and the bird will try to eat the tobacco, and how it seemed like no big deal. In almost year 2020 with all we now know about the serious danger cigarettes smoke is and how she seemed so chill about it blew me away. You guys show such restrain and that speaks volumes why you are both looked up to which has people comming back for more info and help. As 1 of your long time fans for 2 + years and just very recently realizing my dream of buying a bird had to be changed as I realized this would not be good for the bird or me. But I then realized I could still have birds in my life in other ways better suited to me which turns out to being a volunteer as well as Fostering birds while they wait for their real forever home. So with all the knowledge I have learned it was not wasted rather put me on MY PATH for helping out. Finally, you spoke again about the importance of a birds diet and when you mentioned " even if you dont have a bird or have a bird to spread the word about your seasonal feeding system " I cant tell you how many people who happen to be on utube or fb that are having such difficult time with their birds and even asking what should I feed lets say IRN , I ALWAYS point them to you and David. I simply give them your fb page or utube tell them to type in BIRDTRICKS and they WILL FIND EVERYTHING they need to know bird related with yours and Dave's expertise. So even though I don't have a bird myself , Word of mouth goes along way. 👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐❤.

I would just like to kindly say that before you judge how about asking how far our birds have come since the master class
I can say Kermit is now on a full fresh diet and is now food motivated and comes when he is called
And no we do not smoke anywhere near him anymore
Kermit has come a long way since his master class and so has his human flock
And nothing is a big deal it’s the Australian attitude we knew it was bad that’s why we changed and went to the master class and also changed vets
This was such a fun, animated group, we often sat back and felt like guests! We've probably never had soooo much fun teaching at a masterclass as we did at this one, the chemistry between everyone was just on point. When they say "make learning fun" I'm pretty sure this is what it means! People always have the best of intentions, but it is very hard to keep parrots in the home and get it right. Thank you for pointing people to us for guidance, I appreciate being able to reach more people.

You are the professionals and if I have a certain feeling that may not sit right I should keep it to myself. I dont like being judged myself so I have NO RIGHT TO PLACE JUDGMENT ON ANYONE ELSE. For this I'm deeply sorry as this group as you said were absolutely to funny and I really enjoyed it. But telling you is one thing, I need to apologize to whoever I may have offended publically and I will do that. I could only chalk it up to the amount of pain i have been in such i broke my foot and part of leg without pain management and a proper Aircast to keep it in place.

All of your group was so funny and SO HONEST which makes for ( the ultimate best bird owners), and I had no right to place any judgment on you especially. And on the note of not giving up: it took me 6 months to get my African grey to eat veggies and organic cold pressed pellets (from an all seed and some occasional fruit diet that he was fed by his breeder). Now, besides having a healthy bird, I have the skill set to cheat any man, woman, child or animal into whatever I want them to eat. 😎🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh my God, my ekkie barely gets pistachios as a (once or twice a week) treat because I'm so paranoid about her diet and these people are over here talking about giving their birds bacon?? And butter??? If Holly ever got her beak on a cigarette I think I'd have a breakdown.

Squid Fry, it was amazing how Dave and Jamie held it together, knowing what was most likely going on in their heads, and Daves body language said it all.
sharing mistakes is the best! usually we learn more from mistakes than from success and even experiencing other people’s mistakes would make it easier to learn things. I love their honesty which will of course would help reaching for the best results. and this is why courses videos are the best in my opinion, thanks for coming to my ted talk
One of my biggest things I love about you guys, you don’t judge. You know they’re coming to you wanting to improve their birds lives and relationships. You don’t sit and criticize and push them away to a point they may never want to make a change. You encourage and correct them and give them all the tools they need to succeed. Thank you for treating the birds with love and respect and their owners that way too. 💚❤️

Jamie, watching Dave's reactions to how they were living with their feathered friends, was kind of funny. I kept saying to myself oh nooooo, then wondering how much can you really do in just 3 short hours. It takes a lot of patience, but knowing you two, and your sincere love of healthy, happy birds you are there to help. Really nice those Aussie's, and I am sure they learned a lot. Really enjoyed watching, Thank you for sharing.

The best way to teach is with love, and laughter. Great example of love from you, and honest sharing from those looking for growth and change. I admit, I couldn't resist, I watched it several times (lol-in so so many ways).

Training owners as much or more than the bird
I have found that trainers never trai the animals they train the humans.
I bought the BirdTricks recipe books a little over 3 months ago and my birds took to it so well straight away. They have taken all the hard work out of trying to calculate balanced diets for myself. We just started the summer recipe and they dove straight in! TOPs pellets took months and months but I am definitely seeing improvement in weight, feather and faeces quality from it! Can't recommend it highly enough! Very grateful for the time taken to develop and produce these books!

Another tip is during conversion to grind up and sprinkle healthy pellets on the soft food if your bird won't eat pellets. This is how I slowly converted my cockatoo onto a pelleted diet, my vet gave me this tip and I felt so stupid not thinking of it sooner. 🤦♀️🦜

not gunna lie if you guys pay attention to ALL their videos they pretty much teach you everything apart from a few points of freeflight. my bird wasnt a baby he was a abused over weight clipped bird, now i have him outside when weather permits.. i love this channel and what they have done for my flock. keep this up, i miss your podcasts.
out of curiousity i know the basics of freeflight but i was curious on a few key questions wasnt sure how many hours to book :'D and i dont wanna post them here to not confuse beginners

Haha I had the same reaction when my uncle told me that they feed their cockatiel ham and chicken. I was looking after her for 3 weeks and gave her a proper chopped veg and pellet seed mix diet (she eats these things anyways so it was already properly inter grated, she was a good eater) her feathers and build looked so much better than before, it made me wonder how much meat they actually fed her on a daily basis 😂 not good!!
Trust is so important when it comes to the animals in your life. Unfortunately, with all the information out there it's difficult to know who to trust with your animal's welfare. You guys are consummate professionals and It's nice to know these birds are in good hands. 👐🐦
I wouldn't have had the resolve to smile and semi-casually work my way through this conversation as these two very clear professionals were able to. I had a permanent cringe from the moment the male owner stated he mostly just wanted the parrot for the magician image he's going for, through 'til the last moments of this video. Kudos to you both for not making this awkward for them, but man... the parrots aren't laughing, as far as I'm concerned.
I love watching snippets of these masterclasses, though wish they were longer! They're always interesting, educational and fun to watch. When the day I bring a feathered friend to my home comes, I'm sure the knowledge I learned from you guys will come in handy. Thank you for your hard work! I free fly my bird (as an introduction so you understand how I feel about clipping). I was working in a petshop where they didn't sell birds and they started selling birds and it was easier to clip them so I had to quit because I couldn't really sell those birds. I can't sell something I don't agree with. How am I going to tell customers that they are getting a great bird when I know the bird is going to have lots of lack of confidence issues when it grows?

petstores have flight risks, escapes and what not, catching a untamed bird is more stressful then a bird whos never known flight, once they learn flight they gain the confidence.. you quit for a noble reason but it isnt the end of the world infact thats insanely common practise for petstores even tho i hate it myself, i free fly too and bought all of them clipped unfortionitly but its jsut how it is here where i am
Petstores just are not the best place to get any animal. I see what you’re saying, I also think the person above me is right about having flighted birds in a business where people are coming and going is risky.
Cristina Martiño Romero recently at pet smart I saw this conure, he stretched out his wings. THEY BUTCHERED HIM. Like normally they’ll clip like two to three feathers. This poor guy had ever single feather on both wings was chopped off.

Jamie-Leigh and Dave, I love how encouraging and creative you are about finding ways to help a bird get accustomed to healthy food.
I once saw a Dr Harry ( veterinarian) TV episode where the owners of a young pet goat sought help. The goat been hand-raised on nothing but peanut butter sandwiches -- and would not touch any other food. On this diet the goat was fast losing weight and failing to thrive. The only way Dr Harry could get the goat to eat its natural diet of grass (or any vegetable matter) was to smear a handfull of grass all over with peanut butter. Eventually the goat was able to graze normally like any other goat, the peanut butter was no longer needed, and its health returned to normal.
This approach works just as well on humans too - it's how I got my kids used to eating fresh fruit. I made a game where you dip cut pieces of fruit into bowls of chocolate sprinkles and hundreds and thousands. Even visiting kids who "never ate fruit" would eat fruit this way. When it comes to winning over a fussy eater, there's always a way...

My Little Corolla cockatoos just had some Chinese fried rice. One loves edamame beans while the other eats all the corn.
Getting my cockatiel to eat healthy foods is a mental battle for me. However stressful it is, I enjoy the immense struggle😅 he‘s eats snap peas, broccoli, spinach, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumber, all types of melons and berries, peppers, bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, radishes, eggplants, and random other vegetables here and there(listed in order of decreasing popularity). All of these vegetables he eats raw, I never cook/ alter the fresh foods. Seeds take up a small portion of his diet, though he eats a lot of millet daily when he’s doing trick/ recall training. I like to think my cockatiel is one of the healthiest out there😂 but of course, such a goal can always be achieved with hard work and perseverance.
I've been watching a whole load of your videos lately and it provides a fascinating insight into keeping parrots. My interest is really in raptors and although they're *wildly* different a lot of core tenets ring the same- it's quite possible your bird will outlive you and you're going to be amazed at how much time it can take and how difficult it will be. I entirely agree with volunteering at a specialist centre- I've been a volunteer at a local centre for over four years and I've only got my first bird just under two months ago when everything fell into place to be able to do it.
I am a bit interested though, how popular is telemetry on free flying parrots? I don't think I'd ever fly my kestrel free without it.

My cockatiel and I are working on getting her on a healthy diet. Her owner before me fed her an all seed diet. I'm using her old diet to transfer to a pellet and giving her little bits of veggies in the hopes that it will help. I've seen small changes here and there with less screaming and an overall calmer bird. It's slow going but I'm hoping I'm doing good for her. Thank you guys for helping me save my little sunny girl

Since I got my Pacific parrotlet onto pellets rather than the seeds he was on when I got him, I've gotten him to a point where I can train him and hes finally stepping up which is huge after 2 years of him just ignoring my presence and flying away from me whenever I come near him. I'd love to get him onto higher quality pellets and also some veggies but I guess it just amazes me how much the small step changed everything

Our family bird looooves mochas. We all drink decaf, thankfully, but he is so sneaky and will fly over or run over on the counter and snag a sip hahaha. He's so quick! Birds love stuff that aren't good for them 😂 stinkers!
I know what you mean- it is impossible to keep my macaw out of my tea (so I switched to full time herbal). The bright side: it was the turning point te get her to come outside with me: we share a cup of tea (in the summer) on the doorstep. (She took a full year not to freak out once I crossed the treshold, with her on my hand). So progress because of a "bad" habit - I'll take that any day over a cagebound zombie-bird. ;)
In The Olden Days (halfway previous century) it was common practice to give parrots (and other birds) who had upset intestines (diarrhea etc.) only cold, strong, black coffee to drink.
Since cafeine poisons /kills off a lot of bacteria living in the gut it was actually benificial!
(Yes, that is also exactly the reason lots of humans visit the toilet after the first cuppa in the morning: all those dead bacteria are an irritant to the gutlining and need to "go")

Lol I'm a new bird owner of a sun conure and she is 4 months old wings still clipped from the bird store... but she hates my daughter who is 5 years old .. everyone keeps telling me they r so loud but she is very quiet.. the only time she screams is when I walk in the house lol but there is so much I'm learning from all your videos.. how can I get a course with u or hubby .. u say baby bird are easy but I still cant get her to eat healthy food when I try she backs up .. so as of now she is on seeds dry fruit and pellets . I see that when she does not get enough sleep she is very nippy so I'm just looking for help or answers .. I just wanna be the best bird mommy i can be lol

Ugh I used to work at a smokeshop and the owner brought his parakeets in and left them there to live because customers liked seeing them, but everyone there would not only light incense, the owner would come in and smoke in the back right by them 🥺 I was too scared to tell him off and now I regret it. I still think about it to this day and going in to leave him a note ok the effects of smoke and nicotine on birds lungs. I'm gonna do it

Or a cig butt or two? I realize the "philosophy" here is: Better to train the human and have a bird keep his home, than have the human believe they should re-home the bird. However, I agree with you - why did they pick such a sensitive creature to live in a toxic house? I'd have trouble having patience with this, even if I was paid.

The eclectus parrot who was on that girl in pink needs meat in their diet, they r a very specialized type of parrot.
@@charliekezza all parrots eat the occasinal bug-- (and more if they get their beaks around it), it's humans that all of a sudden decided they are supposed to be vegetarians. It's like (almost) everything: all in moderation, even the healthy stuff!
I use Catic Oven fresh bites for 80% of my 1 year old green cheek conure female and maybe 10% seed and nuts I think it Higging fruit to nuts and then like 10% fresh veg and fruit but I'm hopefull the oven bites are as healthy as they sound my bird like holding with her foot to eat

Budgies are just small parrots so training is the same 💕
There's a lot of info online about that. Generally, you want to get him comfortable with you in the room, just sitting in there, not really interacting. once he's good with that, start moving slowly towards his cage. Once he's comfortable with you next to his,, start giving him treats from your hand. Millet sprigs are very nice because they allow you to have room between your hand him. Gradually move to your hand closer and closer to the end of the end of the sprig. Soon he'll be eating out of your hand. I'm glad you are there to help these people. I was horrified when I heard them talking. I understand that you want to keep your clients happy and for the sessions to be fun, (and according to the note, you did discuss diet with the client). However, it was extremely unnerving to hear everyone laughing when the man and woman (who seemed to think it was hilarious) discussed their parrot's dangerous diet, and how the bird gets into the ash tray, tobacco, etc. If they had been talking about a child instead of a bird, would everyone have laughed? I don't think it would have hurt the mood to politely comment that you would discuss the dangers of those things later, and most of all as a role model, not to laugh about something that is so serious.
sometimes peolple laugh out of embarassement. I found it a good sign they all knew in their hearts they should do better (that is why they came)...and if you read the comments: these people DID!

These people are a little weird... Not trying to be mean. I know its important to have a well rounded and good behaved bird, but I let my birds be birds. I would never say "I need him to do what he's told" like I've heard on this channel a few times, you ASK the bird...

It's strange, isn't it, that we are so concerned that we shouldn't feed our birds 'human foods' because they are unhealthy for them. I think this often as I have chickens and they get our veggie leftover but sometimes the odd bread crust or pizza leftover. I say to my husband ' I don't think pizza is good for them ' and then think, well, hey, not natural and not good for us either! I now take a cleaner, plant based diet and feel much healthier for it. Thank you for sharing, I enjoy your videos. 🤗
Kisses work well on male eclectus parrot. I wouldn't try it on my girl eccy she may just bite ur face off. My girl is a sweet beak but my boy loves his veg.

If you rip into a person for feeding the wrong diet/ get emotional and worked up, they're less likely going to want to listen to you. Not to mention it being unprofessional, they're there to give the correct information to people who need their help and came to them for help.
